Mathias Sandorf
Paris: J. Hetzel et Cie 1885. First Edition . Cloth. Good Plus. 11 x 7 1/4. Benett Leon. Paris: J. Hetzel et Cie. 1885. First edition with cartonnage type au ballon avec titre sur fond argent. All Edges Gilt. 111 illustrations and one map by Leon Benett; this copy also does have the letter to Alexandre Dumas on the leaf following the title page. Text in French. 11" x 7 1/4" 552 pp. Spine shows notable fade see scan; some wear at joints and front hinge; light foxing on occasional leaves throughout most notable at title page scan; two modest tape stains at endpapers two earlier owner's names as well one having been crossed out. Textblock in quite handsome and sturdy condition with the above-mentioned occasional light spot of foxing. Overall Good Plus a tad short of about very good. Verne showed a bit of feel for socialistic theory in this adventure tale of a member of nobility whose innate values lead him to side with Magyar rebels in Hungary in a time of revolution. A scarce true first edition preceding of course the English language firsts. Please see scans. LG6

J. Hetzel et Cie hardcover

Meridiana : The Adventures of Three Englishmen and Three Russians in South Africa
New York: Scribner Armstrong & Co 1874. Very Good condition but missing front free endpaper. Top of spine frayed. Bottom of spine slightly rubbed. Previous owner's small ink stamps and signature. Light endpaper foxing. No foxing on most text pages although there are scattered spots on a few pages. With 48 illustrations. Blind-stamped decorations on spine as well as front and back covers. The spine and front cover are also gilt-stamped. Gilt on front cover is still bright and shiny. Gilt on spine less bright but still distinct. Inner hinges are perfectly sound. A tight square copy that presents better than this detailed description makes it sound. Myers' "probable" first issue printing A with 1874 on the title page and only two books listed on verso: JOURNEY TO THE MOON and JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH. This copy appears to be a variant of Myers 39 in two respects. 1 The word "or" does not appear after "Meridiana" on the title page although "or" does appear in the spine title. 2 It is bound in the publisher's terra-cotta cloth rather than green. Myers 39. Taves / Michaluk V009. . First American Edition First Issue. Hardcover. Original terra-cotta cloth/No dust jacket. 8vo. viii 232pp. 2 pages of ads. Scribner, Armstrong & Co Hardcover

Meridiana: The Adventures of Three Englishmen and Three Russians in South Africa
New York: Scribner Armstrong & Co. 1874. First authorized American Edition First State. Hardcover. Good. viii 232 2 p. 20 cm. Frontispiece and 47 other b&w plates. Brown cloth with black impressing. Blank lettering on front may once have been gilt but rubbed off. Gilt on spine extant. Mylar wrap removed for photos. Corners and spine ends worn. Hole in cloth of lower spine. Shelf wear to upper and lower edges. Pages 41-54 73-86 plate loosening. Stain to p. 117 slightly affecting text.

2 books "Journey to the Moon" and "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" advertised on rear of title page. Published same day as Shepard's pirated edition titled "Adventures in the Land of the Behemoth." Original French title "Aventures de Trois Russes et de Trois Anglais Dans L'Afrique Australe" put the Russians first but English translations reverse the nationalities putting Englishmen at front. The word "Meridiana" is unique to English language editions and refers to the geographical measurements conducted by the story's multinational expedition. Plates illustrate African animals as well as human adventures. A review in the New York Evening Post stated "It is quite as wonderful and marvelous as anything this fanciful Frenchman has written." Myers 39 lists three printings; this may be a variant binding of Printing A. Taves & Michaluk V009. Scribner, Armstrong & Co. hardcover

While not about science a scientific phenomenon the Leidenfrost effect is used as a plot device when he hero's evaporating tears save the hero him from being blinded. The story has been adapted many times for film TV and cartoon entertainment even adapted into a play by Verne himself and Adolphe d'Ennery.

The role of Chambers as secondary translator is interesting. During the translation by Kingston for the British edition it was discovered that one chapter "The Marshes of the Baraba" was almost untranslatable because of the knowledge of entomology it demanded. Chambers visited Verne himself at Amiens and had the author go over the text of this highly scientific section. He was impressed by Verne's library of insect books and the specimens he had collected from the French vice consular agent at Tomsk.

At rear is the novella "The Mutineers" followed by 6 p. of publisher's ads.
