VERNE, Jules; [BROWNE, Gordon Frederick]
The Tour of the World in Eighty Days
<p><strong>1900 JULES VERNE Tour Around the World 80 Days RARE PIRATE ED Le Tour Du Monde</strong></p><p>"<em>The Tour of the World in Eighty Days</em>" showcases Jules Verne's imaginative storytelling and his knack for blending scientific knowledge with literary creativity. This classic 19th-century adventure novel follows Phileas Fogg and his valet Passepartout as they race to circumnavigate the globe in 80 days. Published initially in French in 1872 the novel has since become one of Verne's most celebrated and beloved works. </p><p>This specific printing is quite unique as it is part of Hurst and Company's pirated "American Boys Series" that mimicked the cover art of Boston-based Lee and Shepherd's series of the same name. Additionally the title page credits Jules Verne for "The Texar Vengeance" which was a variation of George Munro's title of his infamous pirated edition of Verne's 1887 work "North Against South". <strong>Today this specific printing has become highly rare with less than 25 known copies in recorded existence worldwide!</strong> This is largely attributed to the short print run of the series as well as the utilization of cheaper materials during production. A fascinating collector's item!</p><p>Item number: #41532</p><p>Price: $499</p><p>VERNE Jules; BROWNE Gordon Frederick</p><p><strong><em>The Tour of the World in Eighty Days</em></strong></p><p>New York: Hurst and Company 1900.</p><p><u>Details</u>: </p><p><!-- if !supportLists-->· <!--endif-->Collation: Complete</p><p><!-- if !supportLists-->o <!--endif-->184</p><p><!-- if !supportLists-->· <!--endif-->Edition Notes:</p><p><!-- if !supportLists-->o <!--endif-->Cover: Imitation of publisher's Lee and Shepherd's "American Boys Series" cover art.</p><p><!-- if !supportLists-->o <!--endif-->Title page: Jules Verne credited for the pirated US title "<em>The Texar Vengeance</em>"</p><p><!-- if !supportLists-->o <!--endif-->Contents: Uses the pages they purchased from Richard Edward King prolific Lymington printer and publisher.</p><p><!-- if !supportLists-->· <!--endif-->References: </p><p><!-- if !supportLists-->o <!--endif-->"Texar's Revenge": Taves and Michaluk V033; Myers 49</p><p><!-- if !supportLists-->· <!--endif-->Language: English</p><p><!-- if !supportLists-->· <!--endif-->Binding: Hardcover; tight and secure</p><p><!-- if !supportLists-->o <!--endif-->Red pictorial cloth</p><p><!-- if !supportLists-->· <!--endif-->Size: ~7.75in X 5.25in 19.5cm x 13.5cm</p><p>Our Guarantee:</p><p>Very Fast. The Tour of the World in Eighty Days
New York: John W. Lovell Publisher 1880. This famous work was published in French serially in 1872. Bleiler notes that Verne's publishing history is "very confused" but the first American edition came out in 1873 many pirate editions soon followed. This is a Very Good copy of an early "legal "printing from seven years later.Decorative orange cloth binding; a florl motif stamped in black; titling within gilt labels on the spine and front cover. This binding appears to mimic one by Lippincott; or perhaps the opposite. Clean text; 591 pages. Frontis portrait of Phines Fogg himself. Light rub to the margins; paper lightly toned and quite stiff - almost as a card stock having been used. There is a red mark on the front cover. In an archival platic protector. Reprint Edition. The Tour of the World in Eighty Days
New York: Wm. L. Allison Company 1890. This famous work was published in French serially in 1872. Bleiler notes that Verne's publishing history is "very confused" but the first American edition came out in 1873 many pirate editions soon followed. This is a Near Fine copy of a reprint possible pirate edition. Red cloth binding with decorations on the spine and front cover. Titling on the spine within a gilt compartment. Clean text; 201 pages. The paper is toned which is typical of late-19th Century cheap reprints however the publishers invested in very nice bindings. There is no publication date but Allison began bringing out its reprints mainly marketed to the juvenile market in the mid-1880s. Quercus rather arbitrarily assigns circa 1890 as a reasonable date. Verne, Jules
The Tour of the World in Eighty Days
New York: Syndicate Trading Company 1885. Here is an interesting and scarce ediition of Verne's famous novel. It was first published in America by Osgood in 1873 and many pirate editions appeared throughout the late 19th century. This book has the features of a pirate; nice even spectacular binding combined with a poor quality textblock. The "Syndicate Trading Company" here was not a true pirate nor a traditional book publisher. It was forma ed in 1881as an enterprise to market publisher remainders. There is no publicatin date; Quercus arbitrarily assigns it to 1885 awaiting more clarification. Dark green cloth binding decoratively blindstamped with titling on the spine in a gilt compartment. Designated as part of the "Gladstone Series." The text is clean and clear but very well tanned and the front endpapers are removed. Very mild bumping to the corners. . First Edition Thus. Decorative Cloth. Very Good Plus/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Syndicate Trading Company Hardcover
