Illustrated throughout with drawings and maps. Translated from the French. Although the first American edition of this work was published in 1879 this edition curiously has a dedication page from translator N. D'Anvers dated Christmas 1880. A tight clean example front hinge starting wear at lower front corner and narrow loss at the spine ends. Inside rear covers have light paper remains at extremities. Explorers has faint old dampstaining at bottom page edge of some end pages and inside rear cover. The red cloth has bled onto the inside front cover' s edge and the outer edge of the endpapers of the Navigators book. The covers have light soiling rubbing and extremity wear with cloth worn through at tips; the spines are worn at the heads with fraying and shallow chipping; the spine cloth is dulled.
