First Separate Edition American issue. This is a story about a man's effort to rule the world by dominating it from the air in his nefarious flying machine "The Terrible." The tale demonstrates the evolution of Verne's cynicism: earlier he had written THE CLIPPER OF THE CLOUDS in which Robur the inventor tours the world in his magnificent flying machine -- but now Robur the Conqueror is back seeking world domination instead of scientific discovery. This tale was initially published in French in 1904 and then in 1911 it was included in Vincent Parke's fifteen-volume WORKS OF JULES VERNE -- its first appearance in English. Sampson Low published the book on its own near the end of 1914 and then Lippincott followed with an American edition from the British sheets the following year as here. Though not mentioned on the title page there are many illustrations. This is an attractive copy in just-about-fine condition one tiny nick in the spine head a few minor scratches; unlike the UK edition the spine lettering is in gold and is thus quite legible -- because the UK was at war but the US was not yet.
