‎Jules Verne; N D'Anvers (Nancy Bell)‎

‎The Fur Country‎

‎
Jules Verne's The Fur Country first published in Boston by James R. Osgood and Company is one of the earliest English translations of his speculative Arctic adventure issued only a year after the French original. This edition includes one hundred illustrations and is translated by Nancy Bell under her pseudonym N. D'Anvers. Known for taking liberties in interpretation Bell's work was still essential to Verne's early readership. The story follows members of the Hudson's Bay Company on an expedition through the Northwestern Canadian territories to establish a fort north of the Arctic Circle when natural disasters set them adrift on an iceberg where the tides and even solar eclipses don't follow the rules of nature. The novel explores themes of environmental and geopolitical instability as the expedition team faces from within their own party and from outside forces such as polar bears. Octavo 8vo single volume. Good condition; decorative green cloth binding shows some edgewear and discoloration pages are somewhat toned with scattered foxing and the text block is shaken but intact. Collation: xiii 3 334 pp. Illustrations: 100 engravings. Edition: Boston: James Osgood and Company 1874 First American edition. #31142. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.
James R.
