First edition.
THE 1873 TITLE PAGE IS LEGENDARILY SCARCE ONLY A FEW SUCH COPIES EXIST-The Myers bibliography could only speculate on how many were released. Nearly every copy had 1874 on the title page. Even rarer than the Osgood issue of Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea of which fewer than 50 have ever been found.
Sumner and Stillman well-respected British booksellers and specialists in Verne have only had one in the last 25 years which sold "well into the 5 figures."
Temple books sold their copy for $14000 several months ago.
Condition and Description: See pictures. Very good overall. Elaborate gilt embossed red cloth with black impressed illustrations. This book appeared in several different cloth variants--red blue and purple. Illustrated with black and white plates. Frontispiece with tissue guard. Light - moderate foxing on the preliminaries and postliminaries as usual which tapers progressively in an inward fashion. Gilt edges. The gilt on the cover is raised and scuffed in some locations with some loss and fading. All pages and plates present and accounted for. Discrete and expert repair to the covers including the spine ends particularly the top/top left. The hinges and binding are tight having benefited from invisible strengthening. The back end end paper and flyleaf have some age staining and a light reddish stain which runs the bottom edge and a very small and very old bookseller bookseller sticker.
In all though not a perfect copy one which is both presentable and so scarce that options are limited. For those looking for a fine copy please see David Mile's book catalog $16500. Sampson
