First American hardbound edition of this supernatural tale sited deep in a Scottish mine. Per Kingston's introduction Verne has called into existence a mine of fabulous wealth and has placed in it a mysterious being endowed with superhuman powers who performs wonders unsurpassed in the present prosaic age. Quoting also from T&M The unusually attractive front cover shows the supreme moment when old Silfax standing with arms raised in a small boat in Loch Malcolm calls Harfang the bird to ignite the explosive gas trapped under the cavern ceiling. This tale's first publication in English was in the Spring of 1877 THE BLACK INDIES in George Munro's self-wrappered "Seaside Library." The British authorized edition THE CHILD OF THE CAVERN fully illustrated was issued later that year. The publication date of this Porter & Coates edition is uncertain Myers cites "1878" while T&M states simply that it had to have been sometime before October 1883; however it is regarded as the first illustrated and first hardbound American edition as T&M cites no other such American edition earlier than 1888 and that too was by Porter & Coates. Although P&C published numerous later-printings of Verne tales from the Osgood plates it bought UNDERGROUND CITY is the only Verne "first" published by Porter & Coates. This copy is in brown cloth; we have also had terra-cotta no priority. It is a bright near-fine copy trifling wear at the tips front endpaper with small edge-chips a few signatures slightly proud of this attractively-bound book. Rather uncommon. This is a tale of a meteor's close brush with Earth with the main events taking place in Virginia. The story had first appeared in a French daily journal in March-April 1908 -- three years after Verne's death. Despite the date 1909 on the title verso this book was actually published in November 1908. Though sited in America the book was not published in the United States. This is a handsome volume with one of the 24 Roux plates reproduced upon the decorative front cover. This copy is near-fine contemporary school prize label on the front paste-down light foxing throughout on this thick wove paper rear endpaper cracked. Sold Only by Subscription. Boston: Geo. M. Smith & Co. 1873. Original green cloth decorated in gilt and black. First American Edition second and usual "Smith" issue of Verne's famous tale of Captain Nemo and the submarine Nautilus. Considerable confusion surrounds the relationship of the two Boston 1873 title pages that can appear in this title -- the James R. Osgood & Company title page and this usual Geo. M. Smith & Co. one which refers to the Osgood one and indicates "sold by subscription only". The bindings of the two are nearly identical the Osgood binding reads ".UNDER THE SEA" and bears a jellyfish in the center of the front cover whereas the Smith binding properly reads ".UNDER THE SEAS" and has Captain Nemo using a sextant on the front cover. Clearly the Osgood one is a bit earlier and is much scarcer: supposedly only about fifteen copies were known to exist but we have handled more than a dozen of them over the past 20 years all between $12000 and $27500 so our guess would be more like fifty. One theory is that the Osgood title page may have designated the subscription issue and that the Smith one being much less scarce must have designated the subsequent trade issue. Another possibility is that most of the Osgood edition was consumed by a Boston fire. This copy is a standard copy without gilt page edges a deluxe feature for which the original buyer paid extra. The leaves bulk about 1-5/8" thick some copies are on thinner paper -- no known priority. On the final page of text there is no "THE END" some copies have it some have it partially and some do not have it at all; this is not an "issue point" as is sometimes claimed but merely a case of type slippage during a single print run with no bearing upon which copies were actually first to reach the public. As for condition this is a bright nearly fine copy a few tiny nicks in the spine ends; remarkably the original dark brown endpapers of this hefty volume are still entirely intact. Opts for honorable suicide by arranging for a friend to kill him. Learns that his fortune isn't lost after all. Tells friend thanks but there is no need to kill him. Friend replies that he has already arranged for some thug to do the deed and now can't contact him. This Dutton edition was actually published in October 1880 exactly a year after Lee and Shepard of Boston published the first edition in English which was unillustrated and was in a plain binding. Although this Dutton edition comes from the British sheets including the same binding design the same plates and even an ad leaf for Verne's works with prices in sterling it was published a month earlier than Sampson Low's first British edition. First Illustrated Edition of one of Verne's great mysterious tales of travel: C�sar Cascabel and his family have made enough money to return home to France from California. Unfortunately their trip east is cut short when all their money is stolen. Their only option is to return to France by traveling west via Alaska the Bering Strait and Siberia. Along the way they encounter Mr. Sergius a Russian with his companion Kayette an Alaskan native both of whom join the band on their trip west. However Mr. Sergius has a secret which may jeopardize the safety of the family when they reach the Russian frontier. Kytasaari This was the only Verne title that first appeared in this binding -- the cartonnage "aux deux elephants" which some other tales shared but no other has some of the front cover panels in silver as here. Not only is this the earliest binding style for C�SAR CASCABEL but also the ad catalogue at the rear is the earliest issue dated 1890-1891. This is a remarkably fine bright copy spine very slightly faded but much less than usual and with none of the usual foxing within -- of one of Hetzel's most extravagant bindings. ‎1874. Translated from the French. London: Sampson Low Marston Low & Searle 1874. 40 pp ads dated August 1874. Original orange cloth decorated in black and gilt beveled all page edges gilt. First British Edition published in September 1874 -- the same month as Scribner Armstrong's American edition. This volume consists of two separate tales. The first is a fictionalized narrative of Verne's 1867 passage from Liverpool to New York aboard "The Great Eastern" the largest iron ship ever built and one of the wonders of its age. Her length was 692 feet her beam was 120 her paddlewheels and propeller were larger than anything the ocean had ever seen and she was designed to carry more passengers than the Queen Mary. Because of her size "The Great Eastern" was the only ship capable of laying the great Atlantic Cable. The second tale is fictional more in Verne's usual style: a Glasgow shipowner devises an adventurous plan to run the Union blockade of southern ports during the American Civil War in order to bring a load of cotton back to his city's 25000 idle looms. This copy is in orange cloth we have also had a dark red copy and a green one -- no priority. It is in bright near-fine condition spine slightly faded as usual with this color cloth occasional light foxing on the leaves within; the elaborate gilt design on the front cover remains bright and atypically the original peach endpapers are not cracked.
