Boston: Henry L. Shepard & Co. 1874. Hardcover small octavo bound ii publisher's decorative terra-cotta cloth stamped in black and gold with gilt hippopotamus on upper cover and spine. 190 pages. Brown coated end-papers. Illustrated with 20 full page engravings by Jules Ferat. Second American edition. First edition thus published simultaneously with the Scribner Welford and Armstrong in New York albeit a pirated edition. Very early printing Tenth Thousand on title page. Originally published in Paris in 1872 as Aventures de trois Russes et de trois Anglais dans l'Afrique australe the London edition of the following year and the subsequent Scribner imprint retained essentially the same title adding only the prefix Meridiana. The Shepard edition however chose a wholely new and much more exotic title possibly capitalizing on Verne's previous novel "A Floating City". Whatever the reason early on this novel can be found under alternate titles such as Adventures in the Land of the Behemoth Measuring a Meridian and Meridiana or Adventures in South Africa. A nice copy. No previous ownership marks. Hinges sound and tight. Cloth clean and bright with only very minor rubbing to tips and spine ends. One page shows small tear to upper margin not affecting text and measuring approximately .75 inches. Old repair has sealed tear albeit it is visible. A superior copy of an early Verne adventure novel. Very good or better. Second Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Not Issued. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Henry L. Shepard & Co. Hardcover

Chicago: Scott Foresman 1952. Later edition; special issue. Bound in full leather apparently for the October 1956 premiere of Mike Todd’s Around The World in 80 Days. The brown leather is gilt stamped on the spine with the title and the author; the front board is gilt stamped “To: Jimmy Starr.with the Compliments of Mike Todd.†The edition itself is undistinguished but was probably available in sufficient quantities to bind and distribute to the attendees. Near fine. Todd produced the film which won an Oscar for Best Picture in 1957 and was by far the most successful of his ventures into theater television and film. Of his other ventures he was still married to Elizabeth Taylor when he died in a plane crash in 1958 and his investment in and championing of widescreen technology Cinerama and then Todd-AO survived him. The recipient was a well-known Hollywood columnist. Scott, Foresman hardcover

New York: G. Howard Watt 1924. First American Edition. Some cloth and page spotting; very good in a dust jacket with some soiling spots and tiny chips and tears. A scarce book especially so in dust jacket. G. Howard Watt hardcover
Paris: J. Hetzel n.d. 1863. First Edition; first printing of the author’s first book with all first printing points called for including the proper wording on the title page and the various misnumbered or unnumbered pages. Publisher’s quarter morocco and pebble-grained cloth binding; spine gilt-decorated; all edges gilt; ribbon marker. Tiny bookplate inside the front cover; minor discoloration of the endpapers; an unusually fine copy. This adventure novel of exploration in unknown Africa confused the reading public of France with its plausible story and contemporary travel book style. It was of course fiction and the maiden effort of a former attorney stockbroker and unsuccessful playwright. Verne’s story of an imaginary balloon voyage was almost certainly influenced by Poe and elements of the story which strictly speaking are not truly fantasy or science fiction anticipate those works of his that are. This novel also began one of the closest and long-lived relationships in publishing; Hetzel acted as both editor and publisher and deserves considerable credit for Verne’s artistic and commercial success. This book nor most of the rest of Verne’s work for that matter was not served well by Hollywood. The 1962 adaptation is a hokey bit of nonsense. J. Hetzel hardcover
