Seconda, non comune, edizione italiana (una prima uscì sempre per la Tipografia Editricce Lombarda l'anno prima) di questo racconto fantastico di Jules Gabriel Verne, spesso italianizzato in Giulio Verne (Nantes, 8 febbraio 1828 – Amiens, 24 marzo 1905), padre, insieme a H. G. Wells, della moderna fantascienza. Illustrazioni realizzate da H. Meyer. “Il capitano di 15 anni” uscì per la prima volta con il titolo “Un capitaine de quinze ans” sulla rivista “Magasin d'éducation et de récréation” nel 1878 e venne poi edito, lo stesso anno, in forma di volume, dalla Hetzel. L'opera fa parte dei lavori maturi di Verne. Ambientato, almeno in parte in Africa, il romanzo suscitò, negli anni seguenti alcune critiche per alcuni passaggi che potevano essere letti come “razzisti”. In realtà come ben descritto da Cependant, Jean Chesneaux et Olivier Dumas, “Ce racisme de Jules Verne, son attitude méprisante, s'applique davantage aux couches dirigeantes et aux aristocraties tribales qu'aux peuples d'Afrique et d'Océanie dans leur ensemble. Ce qu'il dénonce le plus volontiers, comme typique de la « barbarie » africaine, ce sont les hécatombes rituelles à l'occasion des funérailles d'un souverain, tel le roitelet congolais dans Un capitaine de quinze ans (seconde partie, chapitre 12) ou les immolations massives de prisonniers en l'honneur de l'intronisation du nouveau roi du Dahomey auxquelles met fin Robur du haut de son aéronef (p. 142).”. Raro.
