VERNE, Jules
Five Weeks in a Balloon; Or Journeys and Discoveries in Africa by Three Englishmen. Compiled in French By Jules Verne From the Original Notes of Dr. Ferguson. And done into English by "William Lackland." With 48 Heliotype Illustrations.

Boston: James R. Osgood and Company 1873. First American Illustrated Edition 2nd American ed. after Appleton. Hardcover. Good. 345 p. 30 cm. Frontispiece and 11 other plates each with 4 pictures. Green cloth with black and gold impressing. Gilt stamped picture of a balloon. Possible variant. Mylar wrap removed for photos. Small tears in spine head and cut in spine tail. Some edge wear and rubbing. Frontispiece loosening. Stain from pressed flower on pp. 102-3. Light soiling thumbing foxing elsewhere. Overall pages are clean and neat.

Verne's first big success is according to the Publishers' Note a satire on English travel books about Africa. Deadly on-ground obstructions are avoided by the ingenious use of balloon travel although there are still savages storms volcanoes mirages and grasshoppers to contend with. The book combining known science with Verne's own flights of imagination was an immediate hit with the public. The Osgood edition contains 48 of the original illustrations considerably scaled down in size through a heliotype process. Taves & Michaluk V0001. Myers 20.
James R. Osgood and Company hardcover

VERNE, Jules; RIOU, Edward (illus.)
A Journey to the Centre of the Earth

New York: Scribner Armstrong & Co. nd. Early Scribner edition cheaper than their first with fewer illustrations intended to meet the low-price challenge presented by Henry L. Shepard's cheap edition. . Hardcover. Good. 305 11 p. interspersed with plates. 20 cm. Frontispiece title vignette and 19 other b&w plates. Brown cloth with blank impressing and gold lettering. Mylar wrap removed for photos. Spine cloth chipped. Corners a bit bumped. Front hinge cracked internally. Bookplate for Theodore & Caroline Foster Sizer on front pastedown. Discolouration to text block edges. Some light soiling to first pages.

Early English translations of "Voyage au Centre de la Terre" generally added "A" in front of the title. Oddly Verne's Professor "Lidenbrock" becomes "Von Hardwigg" and there are other changes from the original French. Despite oddities in the translation "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" remains one of the greatest adventure stories of all time. Riou's illustrations enter into the spirit of the text including creepy dark caverns a mushroom forest prehistoric animals a sea monster a plain of bones "human" remains and so on. A modern adult is overwhelmed by the amount of scientific knowledge in Verne's head as well as his fertile imagintion.

Theodore Sizer 1892 1967 was an American professor of the history of art at Yale University and a director of the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven Connecticut. In 1916 he married Caroline Wheelwright Foster.

10 p. of publisher's ads at rear with first page advertising works by Verne including "Meridiana" and "From the Earth to the Moon." Also ads on title page verso including three by Verne. Taves & Michaluk V002. Myers 35.
Scribner, Armstrong & Co. hardcover
