Verne, Jules & Verne, Paul
The Mysterious Island: Wrecked in the Air Authorized Edition.
New York: Scribner Armstrong & Co. 1875. First American Edition . Cloth. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. uncredited. New York: Scribner Armstrong & Co. 1875. First American Edition and First English Language Edition in Book Form Sampson Low Marston & Co. in England had serialized this first of three parts of Mysterious Island in March of 1874 in St. James Magazine. With a singular tall slender octavo format with 48 illustrations for this first edition of Wrecked in the Air Scribner Armstrong continued their bitter competition with Henry L. Shepard of Boston who announced on the same day October 27th 1874 under the title "Shipwrecked in the Air". This Scribner Armstrong edition however was the authorized one - letters of authorization from French true first edition pubisher Jules Hetzel and from Sampson Marston & Low are reproduced on the recto of the frontispiece - and Shepard could only counter with "Authentic Edition". Date of 1875 on the title page is correct with 1874 entry date noted on the verso of the title page - where Scribner also continues his battle with Shepard by cautioning the buyer against "any editions .which do not bear the imprint of Scribner Armstrong & Co.works published under other other imprints are PIRATED and cannot fail to be inferior in every particular.". Taves & Michaluk V013 appear to concur that the Shepard edition can be deduced to have been pirated from the Sampson Low serialized product. Nonetheless that Shepard edition which was well-made is a collectible edition in its own right. This Scribner's true authorized first edition meets specs not just for the Verne collection but as a souvenir of adventures in publishing as they were in the late nineteenth century. Note that the full three-part Mysterious Island tale was published somewhat later: Wrecked in the Air is the first part. Condition: Corners touched spines tips fraying small indications of soil and wear. Prior ownership by a long-term public service family in the Boston area: bookplate of Frederick M. Whitney on the front pastedown and the signature of Willis S. Whitney - dated December 6th of 1874 in Boston - on the flyleaf. Handsome bright and firm better than very good. See scans. Verne, Jules
Autour De La Lune
Paris: Bibliothèque d'éducation et de Récréation / J. Hetzel 1880. Decorative Cloth. About Very Good. 10½x7. Bayard Emile; Hildibrand; De Neuville A. Paris: Bibliothèque d'éducation et de récréation & J. Hetzel no date circa 1875-1890. 4 180 pp. Illustrated with numerous engravings by Hildibrand after drawings by Emile Bayard and A. De Neuville. 10½x7 red cloth elaborate black and gilt decorations all edges gilt; this is the Hetzel binding known as Cartonnage Type Aux Initiales which places this copy between 1875 and 1890. Some rubbing corners show spine ends worn small stains hinges cracked though not weak; scattered light foxing. Still overall not far from very good condition; About VG. See scans. Handsome copy of an early Hetzel cartonnage of Verne's 1870 sequel to De la Terre a la Lune From the Earth to the Moon 1865. From the Earth to the Moon first published in the United States as The Baltimore Gun Club and The American Gun Club was in fact a moderate satire concerning a group of obsessive American Civil War veterans members of the Baltimore Gun Club who conceive the idea of creating an enormous cannon in order to shoot a "space-bullet" to the Moon.from a site in Florida. Hmmmm. In this title Autour de la Lune Round the Moon the actual journey to the moon was related. Good looking elaborate French cover and spine gilt designs somewhat soiled but clear and salient with original illustrations by Bayard and de Neuville executed in Hildibrand engravings those being to my mind a bit superior to some others of the profusely illustrated Verne titles and editions. Verne, Jules [& Verne, Paul]
From the Clouds to the Mountains
Boston: William F. Gill and Company 1874. First Illustrated Edition in English . Cloth. About Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. uncredited. Boston: William F. Gill and Company 1874. First Illustrated Edition in English. Translated by A.L. Alger. 12mo 285 pp. Terra-cotta cloth with gilt devices one of the lighter-than air balloon's gondola separating and the other three mountain climbers ascending Mt. Blanc. Decorative black and gilt lettering and filigree on cover and spine. Slate coated endpapers. Illustrations including frontispiece with tissue guard intact from wood engravings. Editor's preface not found on other English editions. This much-sought version of the collection of five Verne stories the last "The Fortieth French Ascent of Mt. Blanc" was written by his brother Paul may in fact be the first collected book edition of any sort in English. While Osgood's edition entitled Doctor Ox etc was announced and registered in May and June 1874 respectively no copies were deposited until July 17th. This Gill edition was announced as "now ready" on July 11th ref. Taves & Michaluk V012. Interestingly Gill's announcement referred to a quarto size apparently quite rare if it exists; presumably a decision was made in favor of the known size about 7.3" x 5.6". In any case a popular translation one which was followed by a "New Holiday Edition" and a "popular edition". Condition: hinges tender rear hinge starting; spine shows some fading with small but notable fraying at top and bottom extremes; general mild soil and wear. Undated lightly-penciled previous owner's signature on flyleaf. Better than good most accurately about very good. Stories included: A Drama In Mid-Air; Dr. Ox's Hobby; Master Zachary; A Winter Among the Ice-Fields; and The Fortieth French Ascent of Mt.Blanc. See scans. L200

William F. Mathias Sandorf
Paris: J. Hetzel et Cie 1885. First Edition . Cloth. Good Plus. 11 x 7 1/4. Benett Leon. Paris: J. Hetzel et Cie. 1885. First edition with cartonnage type au ballon avec titre sur fond argent. All Edges Gilt. 111 illustrations and one map by Leon Benett; this copy also does have the letter to Alexandre Dumas on the leaf following the title page. Text in French. 11" x 7 1/4" 552 pp. Spine shows notable fade see scan; some wear at joints and front hinge; light foxing on occasional leaves throughout most notable at title page scan; two modest tape stains at endpapers two earlier owner's names as well one having been crossed out. Textblock in quite handsome and sturdy condition with the above-mentioned occasional light spot of foxing. Overall Good Plus a tad short of about very good. Verne showed a bit of feel for socialistic theory in this adventure tale of a member of nobility whose innate values lead him to side with Magyar rebels in Hungary in a time of revolution. A scarce true first edition preceding of course the English language firsts. Please see scans. LG6

J. Hetzel et Cie hardcover

Verne, Jules and Thoreau, Henry David
Sartain's Union Magazine first Appearances of A Voyage in a Balloon and Walden 1852 Vols. X and XI in One
Philadelphia: John Sartain & Co. 1852. First Edition . Half Morocco and Marbled Paper. Good Plus. 10" x 6.75. from engravings. Philadelphia: John Sartain & Co. 1852. Verne translation by Anne T. Wilbur. All eight numbers from volumes X and XI of Sartain's Union Magazine January through June 1857 comprising Vol X. with July and August of 1852 - after which Sartain's ceased publication - comprising Vol. XI. Vol. X 516 pp. Vol XI 208 pp. bound as one volume. 10" x 6.75" half black morocco with marbled paper boards. Personalized plate at center cover apparently as produced in the name of Jane A. Warner. Later of the Forbes Library Northampton MA. with that organization's bookplate at front pastedown and perforated stamp at title page other Forbes indication at rear endpapers. Binding is quite scuffed with corners and spine ends thoroughly affected; hinges starting. Sporadic light foxing throughout lightly showing a bit at the Verne first appearance in some margins only not affecting the Thoreau first appearances. Good plus for the volume Very Good plus or better for the textblock as a whole and the subject entries in particular. In the dying months of Sartain's Union Magazine in 1852 it might have been of some benefit had that publisher been able to look to the future and understand the significance of what was contained in the the May July and August numbers: The first appearance in English of Jules Verne "A Voyage in a Balloon" in May and the first appearance of any portion of Henry David Thoreau's Walden two essays "The Iron Horse" in July and "A Poet Buying a Farm" in August. Therein the last Sartain's hardbound volume contained seminal appearances of what would become two of the the most significant and most widely reprinted authors in history in two vastly disparate genres. Sartain's had with its last gasps done with these three short and - at the time - inconspicuous pieces exactly what so many periodical publications of its type and era sought to do. This volume contains all eight months; it appears that some perhaps most other examples of the hardbound volume did not include the July and August numbers containing Thoreau's essays although statistics on this point are unavailable to me. "A Voyage in a Balloon" - as "Un Voyage en Balloon" - was Verne's second tale published originally in France a year earlier. Anne T. Wilbur translated the 7-page story for Sartain's - and even received in the index authorship credit although the story itself is rightly credited. Later to become part of the Doctor Ox aggregations it was - Taves & Michaluk V012 - "apparently the first time Verne ever appeared in English." He would have been about twenty-four years old at the time. The two Thoreau essays - respectively three pages and one page in Sartain's dense double-column presentation - were the first taste ever of Walden which was published in book form two years later in 1854. Bearing as well the seemingly countless articles stories poems and charming engravings which were the stock-in-trade of such publications this one particular dying volume of Sartain's Magazine may be much more significantly a peerless confluence of inchoate genius from two who would thereafter take distinct paths to literary immortality. Notable dampstains on both covers corners bumped a bit spine shows one nick and trace scuffing previous owner's markings on ffep. Covers are plain red with stamped panel border lines only the first edition apparently being prior to Hetzel's more elaborate cloth "cartonnages" at least for this title. A very scarce Verne true French first edition Nord Contre Sud North Against South was written during a time in which Verne departed from science fiction in favor of adventure after the dime-novel spirit of the time. Later known variously in the U.S. as North Against South Texar's Revenge Texar the Southerner and in two parts Burbank the Northerner and Texar the Southerner it was a tale of individual Civil War conflict but was of scant historical accuracy and not highly thought of in its English form by U.S. reviewers. Still a scarce and interesting Verne true first. L11

J. Hetzel hardcover
