Original terra-cotta cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt beveled. First American fully-illustrated edition from the sheets of the first British edition. These four tales include three that are among Jules Verne's earliest: "A Drama in the Air" appeared in a periodical in 1851 his second story "Master Zacharius" 1854 his fourth and "A Winter amid the Ice" 1855 his fifth; "Dr. Ox's Experiment" itself did not appear until 1872. 1890. 85 Dessins de George Roux. 12 Grandes Gravures en Chromotypographie. 2 Grandes Cartes en Chromolithographie. Paris: J. Hetzel et Cie. n.d. 1890. 8 pp ads dated 1890-1891. Original red cloth decorated in black gilt and silver all edges gilt.<br/><br/> First Illustrated Edition of one of Verne's great mysterious tales of travel: César Cascabel and his family have made enough money to return home to France from California. Unfortunately their trip east is cut short when all their money is stolen. Their only option is to return to France by traveling west via Alaska the Bering Strait and Siberia. Along the way they encounter Mr. Sergius a Russian with his companion Kayette an Alaskan native both of whom join the band on their trip west. However Mr. Sergius has a secret which may jeopardize the safety of the family when they reach the Russian frontier. Kytasaari This was the only Verne title that first appeared in this binding -- the cartonnage "aux deux elephants" which some other tales shared but no other has some of the front cover panels in silver as here. Not only is this the earliest binding style for CÉSAR CASCABEL but also the ad catalogue at the rear is the earliest issue dated 1890-1891. This is a remarkably fine bright copy spine very slightly faded but much less than usual and with none of the usual foxing within -- of one of Hetzel's most extravagant bindings. Tempete et Calme. Poeme de Jules Verne
Octon France: Verdigris Press 2004. One of 38 copies only all on Hahnemuhle paper each copy hand-numbered and signed by the artist Judith Rothchild and the printer Mark Lintott. Page size: 11-3/4 inches x 5-15/16 inches; 4 leaves colophon printed on gray paper mounted on inside rear cover. Bound by Mark Lintott: leporello style but on the vertical original screen prints by Judith Rothchild in subtle shades of gray on the front and back boards with gray silk ribbon pull at bottom of front board housed in publisher's clamshell box of gray paper title printed in black on front panel lined with screen prints made by Rothchild in shades of gray fine. <br/> Jules Verne's poem was written in 1848 when the author was just 20. The poem literally passes through a storm before reaching safe haven on the other side. The text is superimposed on a series of four of Rothchild's ominous mezzotints which start with a threatening sky go to the complete blackness of the storm and then to clouds quickly moving to sunlight. The text is hand set and letterpress printed in Vendome romain on an Albion press by Mark Lintott. Considering world events of 1848 Verne shows himself to be an optimist with this moving verse admirably served by Rothchild's handsome images which really give a sense of the speed and drama of the storm. Meticulously crafted this is a lovely book. Selected for inclusion in Wellesley College exhibition and catalogue RESONANCE AND RESPONSE 2005. Verdigris Press unknown books

Genetics of Flowering Plants.
New York: Columbia University Press 1975. First Edition First Printing. Octavo lavender cloth hardcover xiv 514 pp. Former-owner’s published review pasted to rear endpaper; otherwise Very Good with light foxing age darkened spotting neat former-owner stamps; in a Very Good mylar protected dust jacket with light rubbing to edges. From dust jacket: This book summarizes our present knowledge and understanding of the genetics of higher plants. Therer has been no book treatment of basic plant genetics in recent times and such a synthesis has been much needed. The focus in Genetics of Flowering Plants is on the nature and action of genes gene systems linkage systems and genetic systems. There are chapters on sex determination mosaicism aberrant segreation ratios multifactorial linkage translocation heterozygotes recombination systems and many other topics. The book concludes with a short but provacative discussion of the place of plant genetics in biology. Wherever possible the author relates the evidence of plant genetics to the findings and concepts in other branches of genetics -- microbial genetics and Drosophila genetics for example. The genetics of microorganisms has received much attention in the modern era. Although its conclusions have often been assumed to hold true in higher organisms this assumption is frequently unjustified. Plants on the other hand possess certain advantageous features as experimental organisms which enable them to reveal gentic processes common to multicellular organisms generally. The great success of the tale encouraged him to produce others in the same vein of romantic adventure with increasingly deft depictions of fantastic but nonetheless carefully conceived imaginary scientific wonders. The Voyages continued with Le Voyage au centre de la Terre 1864; A Journey to the Center of the Earth De la Terre à la Lune 1865; From the Earth to the Moon Vingt Mille Lieues sous les mers 1869-70; Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea and L'Île mystérieuse 1874; The Mysterious Island in which he foresaw a number of scientific devices and developments including the submarine the aqualung television and space travel. Verne's novels were enormously popular throughout the world; one in particular the grippingly realistic Le Tour du monde en quatre-vingt jours 1873; Around the World in Eighty Days generated great excitement during its serial publication in Le Temps and remained one of his most popular works" Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature. Here in 15 lovely volumes are some of his most imaginative and influential works. Vincent Parke and Company unknown books

Verne Jules
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas
London: Sampson Low Martson Low & Searle 1873. First edition in English. Very Good. Rare first English language edition of Verne's classic work preceding the American edition and much scarcer than the 1873 Smith or Osgood US printings. Publisher's original red cloth stamped in black and gilt rebacked with portions of the spine replaced. Original peach end papers with a contemporary gift inscription and Burns Bindery ticket. All page edges gilt. Generally in good condition internally. A young reader has written comments at the end of the book in pencil that could be erased but we've left them as they are kind of charming. Finally publisher's catalogue "For the season 1872-73" has six pages not eight as seen in some other copies. Whether it's lacking the final advertisement leaf or whether it was issued as such we cannot say. A Very Good copy overall of a very scarce book. A similar copy also rebacked and in cloth brought $8750 at auction Heritage 2018.<br/><br/>"Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea is arguably Verne's masterpiece. As a classic it has aged wonderfully well: it is escapist fun but it still retains its literary and scientific significance. To dismiss it as simply an adventure story does it a disservice.it is also an eerie tale of isolation and madness packed full with geographica; and scientific accuracies that make the fantastic uncomfortably believable" The Guardian. A work of incredible imagination the novel follows the expedition and capture of Professor Pierre Aronnax as he scours the ocean deeps in search of a mysterious "sea monster" reportedly attacking international vessels. As it turns out the fabulous beast spotted off the coast of New York turns out to be the Nautilus a secret underwater ship constructed for and commanded by Captain Nemo. An incredible work of adventure that explores the depths of the human psyche. Very Good. Sampson Low, Martson, Low, & Searle unknown books
