THE SURVIVORS OF THE CHANCELLOR
1876. Diary of J. R. Kazallon Passenger. Translated from the French by Ellen Frewer. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company 1876. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt beveled. First American Illustrated Edition actually printed in London. In mid-1875 Osgood published the first edition in English unillustrated as a little volume in their "Saunterer's Series." In November 1875 Sampson Low published the first illustrated edition in London. Then in January 1876 Osgood issued some of the British sheets in their own binding constituting the first American illustrated edition -- as here. In March 1876 -- just two months later -- Osgood's financial situation forced him to sell at auction the plates and unsold copies of the five Verne titles he had published; these were bought by one Albert Mason who in turn sold them to Porter & Coates of Philadelphia -- who would then proceed to use the plates to publish editions of their own. Porter & Coates also issued some copies with the Osgood 1876 title page but with "Porter & Coates" at the foot of the spine. As with the British edition the volume also includes the early Verne tale "Martin Paz" though it is not mentioned on the binding nor on the title page. This copy is in green cloth and the gilt vignette on the front cover is centered no known priority. It is a bright near-fine copy fine except for minor rubbing at the extremities. Apparently because of Osgood's then-pending doom this is today a scarce book. Taves & Michaluk V014; Myers 47.

hardcover books

NORTH AGAINST SOUTH
1891. A Tale of the American Civil War. With Numerous Illustrations. New and Cheaper Edition. London: Sampson Low Marston Searle & Rivington 1891. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black. Early English "New and Cheaper" Edition of this adventure tale taking place during the American Civil War. This is the tale of the antagonism between Burbank an anti-slavery Northerner now living near Jacksonville Florida and Texar a pro-slavery Southerner; Texar winds up kidnapping Burbank's daughter and hiding her in the Everglades and Burbank heads off in search of his daughter -- all as the Civil War rages around them. The first English edition came out in December 1887 though dated 1888. Sampson Low would always issue a "New and Cheaper Edition" two or three years later in a similar but slightly smaller binding but with the same crisp illustrations. This copy is very good recased in its original binding with the original pale yellow endpapers which are reinforced at the joint. The front free endpaper bears the inkstamp of the original owner and its verso bears an 1893 gift inscription to him. This is a Verne title that we seldom see. Years later a clue to the fate of the Franklin is discovered in Australia; Dolly quickly goes there to discover that her husband may still be alive in a remote part of northwestern Australia. Kytasaari This undated Cassell edition was published in November 1891 -- the first Verne book to be published in America after the July 1 1891 effective date of the International Copyright Act; Sampson Low's London edition was published a year later in November 1892. This copy is in mint green cloth; we have also had ochre and aqua cloth no priority. This is a remarkably clean copy in near-fine condition one corner bumped a short nick in the spine head; the front endpaper bears a 1932 signature and the rear endpaper bears numerous penciled notes dated 1960. CAPTAIN ANTIFER
1895. With Illustrations. New York: R. F. Fenno & Company n.d. 1895. Original olive green cloth pictorially decorated in black and silver. First American Edition in cloth of this tale of buried treasure described as follows in a contemporary review cited in T&M: Captain Antifer's father had befriended an Egyptian prisoner at Jaff Jaffa Kamylk Pasha and many years after he received a mysterious document naming latitude 24 degrees 59 minutes north and saying that the longitude would follow later. It never did; but Antifer succeeded in discovering it and had a series of most exciting adventures in searching for the wealth which was to be found on the spot indicated. Antifer's efforts to find the islet's longitude complicated by treachery and demands of marriage take him to the Gulf of Oman the Gulf of Guinea and even north of Norway. After serialization in Boy's Own Fenno published a wrappered version of this tale in June 1895 the first edition in the English language; both Fenno and in England Sampson Low then published clothbound editions in November of that year -- precedence uncertain. This Fenno volume has a binding design very much like those of the American trade binding artist Margaret Armstrong and is profusely illustrated. This copy is in fine condition Christmas 1895 inscription. Taves & Michaluk V042; Myers 6.

hardcover books

CAESAR CASCABEL
1890. Translated from the French by A. Estoclet. Illustrated by George Roux. New York: Cassell Publishing Company n.d. 1890. Original light blue cloth pictorially decorated in black. First American Edition also the first edition in English. Quoting from a contemporary review cited in T&M -- Like most of M. Jules Verne's books it is the story of a journey. Some acrobats wish to travel from California to their native France and having no money they determine to go in their caravan northward to Bering's Straits crossing on the ice and make their way through Siberia into Europe. M. Jules Verne's travellers are generally successful: in spite of robbers icebergs and the Russian police the bold Frenchmen triumphantly reach their goal. Pictured on the front cover is the troupe with their horse-drawn wagon climbing into the Sierras while the spine shows one of them fleeing a grizzly bear. This undated American edition CAESAR was published sometime in the autumn of 1890 probably late September; Sampson Low's London edition CESAR was not published until over a year later in November 1891. This copy is in light blue cloth; we have also had copies in olive green and in mint green no priority. It is a near-fine copy light foxing on the leaves within but the light-colored cloth is remarkably clean and bright and there is scarcely any wear. There is a Christmas 1890 ownership inscription on the front flyleaf. Taves & Michaluk V037; Myers 7.

hardcover books

THE TRIBULATIONS OF A CHINAMAN
1881. Translated by Ellen E. Frewer. Illustrated by L. Benett. New York: E.P. Dutton and Company 1881. 1 page undated ads with prices in sterling. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt. First Illustrated Edition of this curious tale. Wealthy Chinaman hears that his fortune is lost. Opts for honorable suicide by arranging for a friend to kill him. Learns that his fortune isn't lost after all. Tells friend thanks but there is no need to kill him. Friend replies that he has already arranged for some thug to do the deed and now can't contact him. This Dutton edition was actually published in October 1880 exactly a year after Lee and Shepard of Boston published the first edition in English which was unillustrated and was in a plain binding. Although this Dutton edition comes from the British sheets including the same binding design the same plates and even an ad leaf for Verne's works with prices in sterling it was published a month earlier than Sampson Low's first British edition. The czar must get a message to his brother the arch-duke in Irkutsk for which he chooses his best courier Michael Strogoff. The first publication in English in October 1876 was in a wrappered American edition by Frank Leslie; Sampson Low's U.K. edition came out two months later in December 1876 despite the 1877 date on the title page. This Scribner Armstrong edition came out a few weeks later in January 1877; it sold so well that by February a third edition was being advertised. This is a near-fine copy with minor rubbing at the extremities but otherwise scarcely any external wear or soil a few leaves stand slightly proud. First Edition in English of this new and brilliant narrative of adventures by sea and land embracing exciting incidents of the whale fishery in the Southern Ocean and the African Slave Trade all told in the inimitable graphic manner which has made Jules Verne the most popular author of the century from Munro's contemporary ad cited in T&M. Published in France as UN CAPITAINE DE QUINZE ANS this tale was first published in English in November 1878 by the American pirate publisher Munro: The 1878 hardcover edition entitled DICK SAND; or a Captain at Fifteen is the best manufactured of all Verne books published by Munro. A FLOATING CITY and THE BLOCKADE RUNNERS
1874. Translated from the French. London: Sampson Low Marston Low & Searle 1874. 40 pp ads dated August 1874. Original orange cloth decorated in black and gilt beveled all page edges gilt. First British Edition published in September 1874 -- the same month as Scribner Armstrong's American edition. This volume consists of two separate tales. The first is a fictionalized narrative of Verne's 1867 passage from Liverpool to New York aboard "The Great Eastern" the largest iron ship ever built and one of the wonders of its age. Her length was 692 feet her beam was 120 her paddlewheels and propeller were larger than anything the ocean had ever seen and she was designed to carry more passengers than the Queen Mary. Because of her size "The Great Eastern" was the only ship capable of laying the great Atlantic Cable. The second tale is fictional more in Verne's usual style: a Glasgow shipowner devises an adventurous plan to run the Union blockade of southern ports during the American Civil War in order to bring a load of cotton back to his city's 25000 idle looms. This copy is in orange cloth we have also had a dark red copy and a green one -- no priority. It is in bright near-fine condition spine slightly faded as usual with this color cloth occasional light foxing on the leaves within; the elaborate gilt design on the front cover remains bright and atypically the original peach endpapers are not cracked. In our experience this London edition is considerably scarcer than the New York one. Taves & Michaluk V008; Myers 22.

hardcover books

DR. OX'S EXPERIMENT and other Stories
1875. With Numerous Illustrations. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company 1875. Original terra-cotta cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt beveled. First American fully-illustrated edition from the sheets of the first British edition. These four tales include three that are among Jules Verne's earliest: "A Drama in the Air" appeared in a periodical in 1851 his second story "Master Zacharius" 1854 his fourth and "A Winter amid the Ice" 1855 his fifth; "Dr. Ox's Experiment" itself did not appear until 1872. Also included is "Ascent of Mont Blanc" by his brother Paul Verne. Osgood had published the first edition in English in mid-1874 in a small unillustrated volume. William F. Gill of Boston published the first American somewhat- illustrated edition dated 1874 under the title FROM THE CLOUDS TO THE MOUNTAINS. Then this copiously-illustrated Osgood edition came out in mid-1875 priced at a hefty $3.00. The front cover shows Master Zacharius raising the trap door in the floor of his workshop and the spine shows the earthbound "madman" who had fallen from the balloon in "A Drama in the Air." This copy is in terra-cotta cloth others are in green -- no priority. It is an unusually bright very nearly fine copy the slightest hint of wear at the top of the spine magazine illustration tipped to the front endpaper. THE STAR OF THE SOUTH: A Tale of the Diamond Fields
1884. complete in Boy's Own issues Complete in six monthly issues 26 weekly issues of: THE BOY'S OWN PAPER. London: The "Leisure Hour" Office November 1884 - April 1885. Original orange printed wrappers. First Appearance in serial form of one of Jules Verne's less-known tales -- published in book form as THE SOUTHERN STAR in the US and as THE VANISHED DIAMOND in the UK. Victor Cyprien a French engineer currently living in the "Diamond Fields" of Griqualand South Africa desires to marry the beautiful daughter of Mr. Watkins a man who holds claims to the land that are the "Diamond Fields." Watkins has other plans for his daughter which includes her staying in South Africa and marrying one of the wealthier diamond miners. To put himself in a better position to win the hand of Alice Victor buys a share and begins working his own claim. However Alice convinces him to return to chemistry and pursue his theory that he can synthesize a diamond. The experiment appears to work as a 243-carat diamond is created and named "The Star of the South" which he gives to Alice. When the diamond is stolen Cyprien and three other potential suitors for the hand of Alice travel across South Africa in pursuit of the suspected culprit. Kytasaari The serialization in BOY'S OWN with the above title began in the weekly number of October 4 1884; beginning with the weekly number of December 6th the title was changed to THE STAR OF THE SETTLEMENT with a footnote allowing that the prior title "had been anticipated by a book already published"; and it ended with the number of March 28 1885. The monthly issues containing four or five weekly issues plus inserted ads and a frontispiece plate not connected to the Verne novel bear the following month's date. Included are numerous dramatic illustrations from the original French edition. Earlier in March 1885 George Munro published his cheap wrappered edition of THE SOUTHERN STAR a different translation than this and in October 1885 Sampson Low published their fully-illustrated hardbound edition of THE VANISHED DIAMOND this same translation. All six monthly issues are complete except that the final one lacks its color plate they were often removed and framed by buyers; one of the other issues has two plates as required and another has a larger folding color plate. Condition is very good-minus -- the main flaw being that the first issue has corner wear bugs mice of the first 18 leaves; otherwise there is just the usual relatively-minor wear of the delicate spines with generally very little soil at this point BOY'S OWN was still using string not staples so there is no staple rust. These are sizable magazines almost 12 inches tall so it is quite difficult to procure them in much better condition. Taves & Michaluk p. 167.

hardcover books
