General shelf and handling wear including fading and light blemishes to boards wear and rubbing to board edges and slight chipping creasing and tanning to spine head and foot. Pageblock shows some discolouration foxing and tanning the latter leading into page edges. Within several light gutter breaks noted but pages remain secure. It is only now that he is able to thank him for the 'bon accueil que m'a fait Monsieur Benard grâce à votre Gracieuse recommendation'. Benard has lent him 'quelques ouvrages' including 'ceux que vous aviez bien voulu <> sur la petite note'. He has not had time to look at them 'pressé que j'etais tout d'abord de vous remettre ceux que vous m'avez bien voulu prêter'. He has not been able to 'les compulser' but has 'sommairement lu le contenu qui je l'espere me suffira'. As for the 'récit sur l'histoire des révolution des républiques de la Plata' that he has lent him he will return it 'en temps convenable' as it is 'indispensable pour commencer mon histoire'. In 1861 Guinnard's account of his three years of captivity by the Patagonians 1856-1859 was published in 'Le Tour du Monde'. It inspired the first part of Jules Verne's novel 'Les Enfants du Capitaine Grant'. In the Publisher's original dark green cloth-bound boards with bright gilt titling and black stamped illustration to both spine and front cover. Some light marks mainly to the rear board but overall the book presents VERY well. NO Date shown but first published French in 1889 and in English in 1890/91 in approximately the same format and also lavishly illustrated by M. Roux. The former owners names and date '03 in old ink on the reverse of the front free endpaper. So this edition is probably circa 1895/1903. Page fore-edges lightly age 'toned' but generally very clean - Good paper. Yellow endpapers - with a small loss to the foot of the rear free endpaper where the pages had stuck together at some point in the past. 4 143 pp 3 printers info blanks. With a full page b/w frontispiece and 29 other full page b/w engraved plates by Roux. 30 in all. Very clean tight and bright.
