The titular tale is the best known a humorous sci-fi story which discusses the brilliant experiments by Dr. Ox set in an imaginary village in Belgium. Dr. Ox later appears as the villain in Verne's 1882 play 'Journey Through the Impossible'. The tale is thought to have inspired H. G. Wells in writing 'The Food of the Gods'.Undated dated between 1905 and 1914 as per Philippe Jauzac's bibliography. This is the edition with one elephant and a fan to the front board an issue without the printer's mark to the reverse of the half-title.Ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper dated 1916. Contents and plates clean deckled edges a little dusty modern covers as new. One of Verne's rarest British first editions this is a largely forgotten Irish novel being a heart-warming story of a young orphan's trials and tribulations in late nineteenth century Ireland. Mick journeys to Westport Galway Limerick Tralee Cork and Belfast all of which are vividly pictured. On his travels he meets beggars thieves farmers and landlords eventually arriving in Dublin where his fortunes improve.
