Published between 1900-1935. In the publisher's original red decorative cloth Eighty Days and pictorial cloth Tanglewood. Eighty Days contains seven illustrated plates and Tanglewood contains eight illustrated plates including six in colour. Collated complete.Round the World in Eighty Days and Adventures in Southern Africa the classic adventure children's stories as part of the Boys' Golden Library series. c.1900 Hutchinson and Co.A Wonder Book and Tanglewood Tales short stories inspired by Ancient mythology and adventures retold by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The name 'Tanglewood' was inspired by the Gilded Age mansion in which he wrote the novels. In the publisher's original red decorative cloth Eighty Days and pictorial cloth Tanglewood. Externally mostly smart with the odd mark heavier to back board of Tanglewood. Slight edge wear and fading to spine. Rubbing to the joints heavier to rear joint of Tanglewood where cloth has lifted. Bumping to the heads and tails of the spines and to the extremities. The odd faint spot to spines. End papers are generally bright and clean with minor smudging. Offsetting to front free end paper of Tanglewood and previous owner's gift inscription. Tanglewood is missing rear free end paper while Eighty days is missing free end papers. Tender hinges to end papers of Tanglewood and loose hinges to end papers of Eighty. Internally firmly bound with slight wear to hinges between leaves pp. 80-81 and pp.128-129 of Southern Africa in Eighty Days. Pages are generally bright and clean with rare spot to leaf extremities of Eighty and the odd spot and mild age toning to Tanglewood. Previous owner has rendered a couple of plates to Eighty Days. Hetzel Paris 1865 11.5 x 18.2 cm relié Rare first edition. This first appearance of the text in book form was Jules Verne's preferred format as Jauzac notes instead of the more famous gilded publisher's bindings. Contemporary brown half shagreen binding spine with four raised bands ruled in black and decorated with double black panel compartments featuring central gilt floral tools marbled paper-covered boards marbled endpapers speckled edges a few small abrasions to one edge contemporary binding. A small black ink stain to the lower right margin of the opening leaves. A handsome first edition copy attractively housed in a contemporary binding. This founding novel is considered one of if not the most famous early published science fiction story about lunar exploration.   The novel inaugurates a rigorously scientific approach to fiction narrating expeditions to our satellite. As early as 1875 From the Earth to the Moon was adapted as an operetta by the undisputed master of the genre Jacques Offenbach. H. G. Wells's treatment of lunar travel The First Men in the Moon 1901 still owes a considerable debt to Verne even if the British author's conspicuously unscientific traits have often been noted: cavorite his anti-gravitational substance  is a fiction that serves merely as one device that allowed him to focus on what is discovered upon the Moon itself rather than the journey. At the dawn of the century Méliès drew in part on Verne's novel for the very first fiction film in the history of cinema the celebrated A Trip to the Moon. After this pioneer of the seventh art it was a master of the ninth who built the myth of his character Tintin upon Verne's own heroes devoting two albums to the subject of Lunar travel: Destination Moon concerned with the preparations for the voyage as in Verne's first volume and Explorers on the Moon narrating the journey through space as in Around the Moon. Though the lunar voyage had been imagined since Dante Cyrano de Bergerac and a host of illustrious writers in earlier centuries From the Earth to the Moon created a new realist genre that proved remarkably prophetic of the space exploration of the 1960s: ""The first attempt to reach the moon by truly scientific means in modern times was made in Jules Verne's novel From the Earth to the Moon De la Terre à la Lune published in 1865. The book contains some descriptions that amazingly parallel twentieth-century actual moon flights. Just like astronauts Frank Borman James Lovell and William Anders of the historic Apollo 8 flight of 1968 the first men to orbit around the moon Jules Verne's moon travelers Impey Barbicane the president of the Gun Club of Baltimore his adversary Captain Nicholl and the French journal-list Michel Ardan an anagram for Verne's friend Nadar took off from Florida and like the real astronauts they landed on return in the ocean. The original French edition first published in 1873 in two volumes. Originally the story appeared in a serialisation in Magasin d"Éducation et de Récréation from 1872 to 1873. Following the story of Lt. Jasper Hobson and other members of the Hudson's Bay Company as they travel through the Northwest territories of Canada to Cape Bathurst on the Arctic Ocean: they have a mission to create a fort at seventy degrees north of the Arctic Circle. One of the stories in 'Les Voyages Extraordinaires' by Jules Verne. Richly illustrated in text by Férat and De Beaurepaire including a frontispiece and a vignette title page. In a quarter morocco binding over cloth covered boards with four raised bands and gilt to the spine and edges. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and some rubbing to the leather. Internally the hinges are slightly loose but firm at the title page causing the leaf to slightly tear otherwise firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. Undated but this copy is known to be the first edition of 1884.  With the publisher's catalogue CH Jauzac p.109.  In the original cartonnage binding 'Aux Initiales' which was used for this book from 1884-1900. It features three medallions with the top containing the author's initials and the bottom the publisher's initials. Hetzel was known for these beautiful cartonnage bindings which were initially produced ahead of Christmas with a hope tat they would make a popular gift. Verne's works were elevated by these detailed yet affordable bindings.  This novel is credited to Jules Verne and is based on an uncredited manuscript by Paschal Grousset. Its setting is South Africa in the diamond fields in Griqualand. In the original French. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally very smart. Un hivernage dans les glaces is one of the first titles in Hetzel's famous white collection; the collection was launched with 9 titles including Un hivernage dans les glaces. A primitive first version had previously appeared in the Musée des familles in 1855 spread over several issues of the magazine. This official version was rewritten by Verne revised and modified and is the same as found in the collective editions. The primitive version was naturally forgotten until the Bulletin de la société Jules Verne republished the version in 2003 in a limited edition of 50 copies. Publisher's binding type 1 ""with oval vignette"". This title features 5 different types of binding but the first type is the only one corresponding to the typography of Hetzel bindings. Spine with stylized black and gold vegetal motif a gilt cartouche for the title. Rich decoration on the upper board with angular red fleur-de-lis on black ground. Large oval vignette illustrated scene printed on percaline. Second board with fleur-de-lis decoration. Plate signed Souze binding by Lenègre. Fine first plate. Corners good barely turned for some. Spine good headcaps rubbed. Second board good with slight shadowed areas. Some light brown stains on certain pages but overall fresh with paper remaining white. A handsome copy. J. Hetzel unknown‎

Identified with 'Bibliotheque' running the length of 45mm to the title page a portrait of Verne to a preliminary leaf and each of the eight plates bearing the title of the novel and page number they should face to the tail with '.' appearing after each page number.In a beautiful cartonnage binding by Verne's published Hetzel. These bindings were produced ahead of Christmas with the hope that they would make popular gifts; Hetzel furthered the popularity of Verne's work with these publications.Illustrated by Jules-Descartes Ferat who illustrated a number of other works by Verne as well as for Victor Hugo and Edgar Allan Poe.
