Exemplaire d'essai imprimé sur vergé teinté avec la première double-couverture non imprimée sur le papier vélin blanc glacé qui recouvrira les exemplaires de tête. L'exemplaire provient des archives Noël Arnaud - l'éditeur de la plaquette imprimée en octobre 1942 - avec son ex-libris qui figure au verso du premier plat de couverture. . Premier recueil de poèmes de résistance du poète et le dernier publié au grand jour Poésie et Vérité 1942 est repris de Dichtung und Wahrheit de Goethe dont a précisément paru début 1942 chez Aubier la première traduction intégrale par Pierre du Colombier couronnée par la Société des gens de lettres. Lorsque la plaquette d'Éluard sera sous presse à l'automne ce sera en plus d'obvier à la nouvelle exigence faite aux imprimeurs depuis le 15 mai d'un aval indispensable pour l'obtention du papier l'autre raison qui conduira à l'antidater au 3 avril 1942 : en faire une réponse-manifeste aux autorités d'occupation moins discrète que celle de Claude Roy auteur en août 1942 d'un poème intitulé « Poésie et Vérité » que publieront les Éditions de la revue Fontaine. À l'automne 1941 Éluard est entré en contact avec le groupe surréaliste de la Main à plume nom rimbaldien tiré d'Une saison en enfer : « La main à plume vaut la main à charrue » et spécialement avec le jeune Noël Arnaud le futur éditeur de Poésie et Vérité 1942. Dès la fin octobre 1941 en effet les deux hommes ont des projets communs comme en portent trace les lettres et pneumatiques que le premier adresse au second et dont la Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal conserve des photocopies pour les seules années 1941-1942. « Je pense à cette phrase de Montesquieu qui pourrait nous servir ne serait-ce qu'en citation lui écrit-il alors : ‘Pour faire de grandes choses il ne faut pas être un si grand génie : il ne faut pas être au-dessus des hommes ; il faut être avec eux' » maxime présente dans les Cahiers de Montesquieu que vient de publier Bernard Grasset au printemps et dont la presse se fait l'écho. Depuis Vézelay où il demeure avec Nusch jusqu'à la mi-mars Éluard écrit à Arnaud depuis l'hôtel du Cheval blanc : « la vie est plus facile ici qu'à Paris. Et ce pays est très beau sous la neige. Travaillez-vous . Je resterai absent le plus longtemps possible. Écrivez-moi. » À son retour à Paris Éluard reprend contact le 9 avril avec Arnaud pour publier des morceaux choisis de « Poésie involontaire et poésie intentionnelle » dans la prochaine parution de la Main à plume lui ayant déjà donné un texte pour Transfusion du verbe édité en décembre ; après bien des échanges et des difficultés Poésie involontaire et Poésie intentionnelle paraîtra en juillet. Ce qui occupe bientôt Éluard et Arnaud sans doute dès le mois de mai lorsque le poète s'apprête à confier à Fouchet le manuscrit de « Liberté » / « Une seule pensée » c'est la publication de Poésie et Vérité 1942. Les deux hommes y travaillent sans l'évoquer dans leurs brefs échanges épistolaires qui exigent parfois la discrétion d'un seul à seul : « voulez-vous me téléphoner ce soir tard ou demain matin très tôt. Il faudrait que je vous voie dans la journée » lui écrit le poète le 12 juin sur une carte pneumatique. De graves difficultés entravent en juillet les activités de la Main à plume qui retardent l'exécution du projet au point qu'Éluard songe parallèlement à une autre édition de Poésie et Vérité 1942 en zone non occupée ou à l'étranger comme il s'en ouvre à Parrot fin août : « Ce serait bien à Poésie 42 à cause du titre ou aux éditions Charlot Sinon en Suisse l'éditeur de Jouve ou à mes frais » Scheler p. 152. La plaquette sera finalement publiée à la toute fin de septembre ou début octobre par la Main à plume de Noël Arnaud sises 11 rue Dautancourt son adresse personnelle dans le 17e arrondissement mentionnée sur la couverture. En tout cas avant le 6 puisque l'un des exemplaires sur japon comporte une dédicace datée de ce jour et nommée « premier envoi » exemplaire Spyridaki. La veille 5 octobre 1942 Éluard avait déjà adressé à Louis Parrot en zone sud cinq cents exemplaires de Poésie et Vérité 1942 ; d'autres sont communiqués au peintre Cicero Dias à l'ambassade du Brésil à Vichy qui les transmet à Roland Penrose à Londres. Parrot en fait lecture à Clermont-Ferrand ; Gabriel Audisio à Marseille : « C'était un message d'espoir qui nous venait de l'autre zone un message semblable à celui que les prisonniers parvenaient parfois à nous transmettre de leurs cellules. La R.A.F. en lança des milliers d'exemplaires dans toute la France » Louis Parrot L'Intelligence en guerre p. 99. Bientôt traduit par Penrose le texte connaît un retentissement extraordinaire à travers le « monde libre ». Malgré le Paris occupé malgré les risques malgré les rafles dans l'équipe de La Main à plume qui décimera la moitié du groupe en juillet Noël Arnaud Paul Éluard et Lucien Cario l'imprimeur se donnent la peine d'établir un tirage de luxe de la plaquette sur différents papiers et sans doute avec les moyens du bord : - 1 exemplaire sur japon nacré n°1 relié par Martin Destribats I 2019 ; - 4 sur japon impérial n° 2 dédicacé à Hugnet n° 3 dédicacé à Spyridaki et deux non justifiés non dédicacés l'un établi par Marguerite Fay Bibliothèque Gwenn-Aël Bolloré Sotheby's 2002 n° 21 l'autre par Pierre-Lucien Martin Bibliothèque Jean-Pierre Guillaume 1995 n° 165 puis Houdayer I 2021 n° 97 ; - 10 exemplaires sur Hollande ; - 20 sur vergé teinté ; - 30 sur Ronsard gris ; auxquels il faut ajouter un exemplaire sur vélin fort non annoncé justifié « exemplaire d'auteur » de la main même d'Éluard Artcurial 2014 n° 213. Soit 66 exemplaires en tout et pour tout auquel il faut enfin rajouter ce 67e « sauvé du rebut » par Arnaud. Qui aurait pu le justifier « exemplaire d'éditeur » ! Beautiful facsimile edition of this 11-year collaboration between poet artist and original publisher Gérald Cramer whose "combined efforts and perseverance rendered the creation of one of the great monuments of twentieth century art" publisher's preface. With a new introduction by Anne Hyde Greet adapted from her 1983 essay in Bulletin de Bibliophile: "Miró's attentiveness to words his use of them as springboards or launching pads into his own world of mysterious shapes and colors had to do with what he called 'tension d'esprit': 'What I need is a mental tightening or stretching . An atmosphere favorable to that tightening I find in poetry music architecture . in my daily walks in certain sounds.'" 13'' x 10.25''.
