This collection has three plays by Merimee: 'Les Deux Heritages or Don Quixote' 'L'Inspecteur General' and 'Debuts D'un Adventurier'. Written by Prosper Merimee a French dramatist historian archaeologist and short story writer. His best known work was 'Carmen' a novella which became the basis of Bizet's opera Carmen. He was the first translator of much Russian literature into French. This volume includes his translation of Gogol's 'The Government Translator'.In the French language.From the University of Keele library.In a binding by J. Edmond of Aberdeen; with their binders stamp. In a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally smart with rubbing to the spine particularly to the head and tail and boards. Library bookplate to front pastedown and recto of front endpaper. Prior owner's signature to the recto of front endpaper. Internally firmly bound. University of Keele blind stamp to title page. Prosper Mérimée ill is bedridden: "". mes amis m'apportent quelques fois de jolies fleurs. Je serais bien heureux si je pouvais vous en faire part"" "". my friends sometimes bring me lovely flowers. I would be very happy if I could share them with you"" and feels exasperated by the political situation in France: ""Aux maux physiques se joint chez moi l'agacement nerveux que me donnent nos affaires."" ""L'alliance des légitimistes avec les républicains est de que j'ai vu de plus triste et de plus honteux dans l'histoire de nos révolutions où il y a tant de pages tristes et honteuses."" ""To physical ailments is added in my case the nervous irritation that our affairs give me."" In uniform calf bindings signed Sotheran & Co. Prize binding with bookplate to front pastedown dated 1916. Complete in two volumes. With half titles. Containing the letters of Prosper Merimee in the original French originally published posthumously to the author's death in 1873 in several volumes. Most of these letters are addressed to Jenny Dacquin with whom the Merimee had a relationship by correspondence from 1831. Prosper Merimee was a Romantic French author one of the pioneers of the novella and noted archaeologist and historian. He is best known for his novella 'Carmen' which became the basis of Bizet's opera 'Carmen.' In uniform full calf bindings signed Sotheran with five raised bands gilt tooling to spine and extremities gilt to edges marbled endpapers. Externally sound with light shelf wear spine labels missing. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally very clean throughout. Very Good Calmann-Levy hardcover

The first edition was so rapidly exhausted that a new one had to be printed a few months later. Contemporary half red shagreen binding. Spine with raised bands decorated with 3 fleurons and blind fillets gilt title and volume number. Some traces of rubbing. Handsome copy almost free from foxing with fresh paper. These famous letters were addressed to Jenny Jeanne Françoise Dacquin from 1841 to 1870 the last of which was written two hours before the author's death. Hippolyte Taine's preface constitutes one of the first and best testimonials about the writer. While Mérimée complained of being unable to devote time to a true work he unknowingly conceived his ultimate masterpiece with this collection of letters.
