Er is, vooral de laatste twee decennia, nogal wat onderzoek naar de verwerving van taal verricht. Het grootste deel van het onderzoek betreft de verwerving van de moedertaal door peuters en kleuters. Het is duidelijk dat die op enkele jaren tijds een enorme vooruitgang boeken op alle gebieden van de grammatica en op gebied van de woordenschat. Als het kind naar de lagere school overgaat, is de taalverwerving evenwel nog niet voltooid. Toch heeft die taalontwikkeling na het zesde levensjaar veel minder aandacht van de onderzoekers gekregen. De vooruitgang van de kinderen is natuurlijk wel minder spectaculair dan de vorige jaren, maar - zoals uit het onderzoek blijkt - niettemin onmiskenbaar op het gebied van de woordenschat, de syntaxis en de flexiemorfologie. Naar de ontwikkeling van de lexicale morfologie is evenwel nauwelijks onderzoek verricht. La demarche suivie est descriptive, sans a priori theorique, mais basee sur un ensemble important de donnees empiriques d?origines variees (donnees orales, textes litteraires, presse). Les formes en de + adjectif sont nombreuses (il y a une place de libre, il y en a une de libre, il a achete quelque chose de beau, il en a de belles, etc.) et leurs rapports mutuels n?ont jamais ete etablis de facon tout a fait satisfaisante. La comparaison avec les formes sans de a permis de degager les proprietes distinctives des differentes constructions. L?une d?elles, dont l?exemple type est il y a une place de libre, a ete soumise a une analyse plus approfondie qui comporte deux volets fondamentaux. En effet, les proprietes syntaxiques de la construction ont ete examinees parallelement a ses proprietes semantiques et pragmatiques. Ces deux approches sont complementaires, car certains faits qui posent probleme au niveau de l?analyse syntaxique peuvent s?expliquer au moyen de la structure informationnelle. Stefaan Evenepoel bespreekt daarin de eerste vijf bundels - van Onder het vee tot Een lege plek om te blijven - die Kopland tussen 1966 en 1975 heeft gepubliceerd. De auteur gaat uit van stilistische kenmerken van deze bundels, waarna hij op zoek gaat naar de relatie met Koplands thematiek, met zijn visie op werkelijkheid en poezie. Gaandeweg laat deze studie zien hoe de gedichten erin slagen om bij zovele lezers de indruk op te roepen dat iemand rechtstreeks tot hen spreekt, dat iemand zich aarzelend, tastend, zoekend tot hen richt. De opeenvolgende hoofdstukken staan met andere woorden ook in het teken van de sterke communicatieve kracht van Koplands poezie. Zo wordt in het eerste hoofdstuk de vraag geformuleerd naar de precieze aard van de zogenaamde 'anekdotiek' in de vroege poezie. Om daarop in te gaan, brengt de auteur ook de ontvangst van de opeenvolgende bundels in de literaire kritiek in kaart. De volgende hoofdstukken behandelen de overeenkomsten van Koplands poezie met het woordgebruik en de zinsbouw van gesproken taal en ze besteden extra aandacht aan het typisch poetisch verschijnsel van het enjambement. Nadat enkele frappante verwijzingen naar diverse tekstgenres, zowel naar bijbelse genres als naar populaire liedsoorten, besproken zijn, zorgt het slothoofdstuk voor een synthese en meer thematische interpretatie van al de voorgaande hoofdstukken. Dat levert uiteindelijk aantekeningen op bij de poeticale en ideologische draagwijdte van Koplands poezie. Die doelt op een zo groot mogelijke invulbaarheid, openheid en daardoor soms ook paradoxaliteit. Vandaar de titel die Stefaan Evenepoel aan zijn studie heeft gegeven: Volmaakt onaf. Door middel van het aanwezige - wat in taal en verzen gestalte heeft gekregen - verwijst Kopland naar het afwezige. Since the nineteenth century it has in many accounts underpinned a system of linguistically-informed national traditions. David Murray shows in 'Poetry in Motion' how categorizing poetry under headings like 'French' or 'Italian' poetry can obscure the thinking of medieval poets and scribes about what constituted a language. Rather than existing within a series of rigidly distinct linguistic systems, Murray demonstrates that song moved in a fluid environment where linguistic boundaries could be easily crossed. Aided by its melody, metrical form or quotation in a larger text, a song could travel and elicit meaningful reactions and interactions far from 'home'. Combining literary studies with philology, manuscript studies and musicology, 'Poetry in Motion' shows the truly European reach of song in the Middle Ages.
