br. L'ambiguità pervade molti aspetti del pensiero e dell'esperienza, sfidando non solo le nostre certezze nel valutare, percepire e comunicare la realtà, ma anche i tentativi di definizione: lo stesso termine "ambiguo" si rifrange infatti in una costellazione di significati che evocano sia ciò che è incerto, dubbio, oscuro, e quindi difficile da interpretare, sia ciò che è equivoco, doppio, molteplice, e dunque interpretabile in modi diversi. Per questo l'ambiguità ha spesso attratto gli specialisti e i creativi del segno linguistico: filosofi e giuristi, retori e scrittori, teorici e critici della letteratura, lessicografi e traduttori, ma soprattutto linguisti, che su di essa si pongono molte domande. Perché le lingue hanno parole ed espressioni ambigue? La loro presenza è un vantaggio o un ostacolo per la comunicazione? Quali meccanismi intervengono nella disambiguazione? E qual è il ruolo dell'ambiguità nei processi del cambiamento linguistico? Per rispondere a questi interrogativi, il libro accompagna il lettore in un percorso attraverso le diverse manifestazioni del fenomeno, considerato nella sincronia e nella diacronia di numerose lingue, antiche e moderne.

Cm. 24, pp. (16) 470. Con incisione xilografica al frontespizio, capolettera, testatine e finalini in xilografia ed alcune graziose incisioni nel testo. Leg. coeva in cart. alla rustica ricoperto da carta dipinta e con titoli ms. su tassello al dorso. Esemplare genuino e marginoso, una piccola mancanza all'angolo del piatto posteriore, ma ben conservato. Domenico Magri (1604-1672), teologo maltese, fu autore di un vasto repertorio di opere che spaziano dall'esegesi biblica ai costumi delle civiltà lontane (assai curioso un suo scritto monografico dedicato al caffè). Gamba (2194), a proposito di quest'opera, parla di "fonte di buone voci". Verosimilmente seconda edizione. Cfr., per un'edizione posteriore, Piantanida, 4782.

Questo libro, che si propone come prima monografia italiana complessiva su un vero maestro degli intellettuali d'Europa, offre al lettore un percorso attraverso la sua poliedrica ed instancabile attività, che ne fa un pioniere della comparatistica letteraria e linguistica: dal giudizio accorto sul saggio "De la littérature di Madame de Staël" alle traduzioni di Baggesen, Berchet e Manzoni; dal contributo alla causa dell'indipendenza greca alle ricerche di linguistica romanza. Coniugando lo studio appassionato delle lettere a un profondo interesse per l'uomo, Fauriel declinò in modo personale la combinazione di cultura e politica, di studio letterario e impegno civile, tipica del gruppo di "Idéologues" di cui fece parte e poi del grande movimento romantico. Ne emerge la figura di un intellettuale di prim'ordine, la cui ricerca rispose anche a meditate esigenze morali.
