‎EDITION ORIGINALE de cet ouvrage qui connut un très grand succès à sa parution. Exemplaire avec l’ex-libris gravé "Ex-musaeo Elz. Pin" qui représente un livre ouvert avec le chiffre EP à gauche et les armes à droite. Cet ouvrage, commandé à Estienne par le Roi Henri III est le troisième consacré par l’auteur à la défense de la langue française, qu’il jugeait supérieure à toutes les autres. Rédigé en trois mois, De la Précellence du langage français faisait partie d’un plus vaste projet, d’où le titre de Project de livre, qui ne fut pas mené à son terme (Renouard, 181 ; "En français dans le texte", 62). Mamert Patisson, qui était le beau-frère par alliance de Henri II Estienne, imprimait dans l’atelier familial, l’ouvrage sort des presses des Estienne. Très bel exemplaire, absolument frais, dans une luxueuse reliure fort bien établie.‎

Ewald (1803-1875) was a “Protestant theologian [and] scholar of the Bible, Israelite history, and Semitic languages... He served as professor at Goettingen and Tuebingen. He was twice dismissed from his post – once in 1837 for protesting against the abolition of the Hanoverian constitution by the king, and again in 1867 for refusing to swear allegiance to the king of Prussia. Ewald viewed historical criticism not as a religious threat but as a means of reconstructing the process by which divine providence had chosen to reveal the true faith to humanity. He believed that the stories of the patriarchs could be used to reconstruct ancient Israelite tribal history, but that the patriarchs themselves were "ideal types. " Ewald was more positive in his historical assessment of Moses. As for the Hebrew prophets, it was through them that God gave the most important truths to humanity. Ewald also did research on Hebrew and Arabic grammar and on the medieval works of Hebrew grammar, which were written in Arabic. ‎Scholars of medieval literary and cultural history have grown more aware of the crucial role of memory in the production, reception and functioning of texts and manuscripts. We owe this to the pioneering studies of Frances Yates and, more recently, Mary Carruthers and Susan Hagen. Historical linguists for their part try to describe the linguistic means by which listeners and readers are enabled to store the information flow in their memories. The relationship between medieval texts and memory is at the centre of this book. Seven historians of literature, three linguists and one art historian have contributed eleven essays, subsumed under three sections. The first section, 'Memory Texts', discusses genres that belong to medieval mnemonics. In the second and most extensive section, 'Memory Aspects in Texts', the focus is on literature and, more particularly, on how attention for mnemonics can enhance our insight into the form, composition and functioning of literary texts and manuscripts. Mental and visual images play a central role here. 'Text Memory', the final section, analyses medieval (French) literary discourse as a fabric of reference chains, in which different grammatical markers generate and organise mental representations in the memory.‎
