About the author: William Henry Denham Rouse was a Calcutta-born Englishman who became the most learned teacher of Greek and Latin in his time. For a quarter of a century he headed the Perse School in Cambridge where he made certain that each boy left with a conversational competence in the languages of Homer and Cicero. When he died in 1950 at 86 he left behind him first-rate down-to-earth translations of The Odyssey and The Iliad that virtually returned Homer's classics to the common man. Also left behind but then unpublished was his last work a translation of still another of the world's great books. The Great Dialogues of Plato. Classicists may continue to give their allegiance to the translation of Greek Scholar Benjamin Jowett 1817-93 but the plain reader will find that Rouse has given him a great legacy of philosophy in language that hews to simple clarity. Socrates himself; wrote Rouse in an introduction described his object as that of a midwife to bring other men's thoughts to birth. Socrates never wrote but after his death a brilliant pupil named Plato wrote down his master's oral comments and arguments. ABOUT THE BOOK:- Learning Tamil in the early modern world had connected so many people of various nationalities and such connectivity was without any bias. This book treats in great detail and quite innovatively the stages of development of the study of Tamil language by several missionary individuals during the mid-16th to mid-19th century. It establishes the growth of relationships in the spread of Tamil all over the globe and more particularly in European countries with comparative linguistic interests. The volume provides a new, clear-sighted and thought-provoking account of the missionary linguists and linguistics who wrote Tamil grammars, compiled multiple dictionaries and word-indices after their arrival on the Tamil coast. It examines the forms and contexts of use of the language and how grammatical and lexicographical ideas first came to be expressed through the medium of paper manuscripts in several European languages into the public sphere. EXTREMELY RARE omnibus volume featuring five titles by the renowned Jewish-German rabbi, scholar and archaeologist Joseph Lewin Saalschütz. It includes the series "Forschungen auf dem Gebiete der Hebräisch-Aegyptischen Archäologie", which in itself is divided into three parts: "Zur Geschichte der Buchstabenschrift in besonderer Beziehung auf Hebräer, Phönicier, Griechen und Aegypter" (1838), and includes a lithographic plate featuring early examples of early alphabetic scripts; "Zur Kritik Manetho's nebst einer Beilage: Hermapions Obelisken-Inschrift" (1851); and "Manethonischen Hyksos" (1851). Also included is the second edition of Saalschütz's seminal work on Biblical poetics, "Form und Geist der biblisch-hebräischen Poesie" (I. Strophenbau und Versrhythmus / II. Charakter und Inhalt / III. Naturanschauung und Naturpoesie). Finally, this book features a study of traditional laws relating to Synagogues by a Moravian rabbi Moritz Duschak: "Umriss des biblisch-talmudischen Synagogenrechts mit Rücksicht auf die jetzige Stellung der österreichischen Juden". 225x140mm.
