ISBN 9782503513003.‎ ‎Le Livre IV du "De varietate fortunae" de Poggio Bracciolini rapporte le compte rendu que Niccolo de' Conti fit de ses voyages en Inde et dans le Sud-Est asiatique entre 1414 et 1439. A ce titre, il a joui d'une vaste diffusion, independamment du reste de l'ouvrage, comme l'attestent un certain nombre de manuscrits contenant le seul livre IV ainsi que la premiere edition du texte latin du "De varietate fortunae" ("India recognita", 1492), limitee elle aussi a ce dernier livre. Le succes du livre est lie aux informations nouvelles qu'il contient sur des regions jusque la mal connues (interieur de l'Inde, Birmanie, Java, Borneo, ...), qui seront exploitees par la cartographie et par les recueils de voyage, en particulier celui de Ramusio, "Delle navigazioni et viaggi". Mais le compte rendu de Conti assume aussi un interet majeur car il se situe a une periode charniere, transition entre l'epoque ou l'Asie est "decouverte" par les missionnaires et les marchands lors de la domination mongole (XIIIe et XIVe siecles: Guillaume de Rubrouck, Marco Polo, etc. ...) et celle ou les expeditions maritimes des portugais vont leur assurer la maitrise du commerce dans ces contrees. Le texte de Conti nous interessera donc aussi bien dans son contenu que dans sa forme; l'introduction ainsi que les notes s'efforceront d'etablir des comparaisons nombreuses avec d'autres recits de voyage concernant les memes contrees, tant par ceux qui ont precede Conti (Marco Polo, Ibn Battuta ...) que par ceux qui l'ont directement suivi (Duarte Brabosa, Tome Pires ...). Tot aan de Reformatie bleef zij de belangrijkste toegang tot de bijbel in de volkstaal. De vertaling werd vervaardigd door Petrus Naghel (overl. 1 mei 1395), een kartuizer uit het klooster te Herne, die ook tal van andere werken uit de christelijke traditie in het Middelnederlands overzette. Zijn opdrachtgever was Jan Taye, een getrouwde man met kinderen, die enige malen schepen in het stadsbestuur van Brussel was. Zijn bemoeienis, als leek van eenvoudige adel, met het ontstaan van een bijbelvertaling is zelfs in Europees perspectief hoogst opmerkelijk. Centraal in deze studie staat de Historiebijbel van 1361, die Naghel op 23 juni 1361 voltooide. Een historiebijbel bevat uitsluitend de historische boeken van de bijbel, veelal rijkelijk voorzien van commentaren en tal van andere teksten, soms van geheel profane aard. In acht hoofdstukken worden diverse aspecten van de Historiebijbel behandeld, zoals: de persoon van de vertaler en diens opdrachtgever, alsmede de historische bronnen die ons hierbij ten dienste staan; de oorspronkelijke opzet van de tekst; de waarde van de oudste handschriften voor onze kennis van receptie en productie van de tekst; de bewerkingstechniek die Petrus Naghel toepaste; de maatschappelijke en sociale factoren die een rol speelden bij de productie van historiebijbel-handschriften; de (vermeende) relatie met de Franse bijbelvertaling; de factoren die uiteindelijk hebben verhinderd dat Naghels bijbelvertaling door leken werd gelezen, waarbij met name dieper wordt ingegaan op de rol van de Moderne devotie. Compared with the work of more celebrated pre-nineteenth-century Anglo-Saxonists and antiquaries, Lye's was a scholarly output of less original talent and reach (the role he gave himself was to 'remove the rubbish out of the way, as an underworkman'), but in the course of editing, improving, and publishing the hitherto unpublished work of others he made genuine advances in scholarship, particularly in the areas of English lexicography and Gothic studies. The Lye correspondence - in the main a collection of scholarly letters that are also sometimes the personal communications of friends - indicates how varied his interests were, how widely he read, and how frequently he discussed texts, elucidated cruces, and established correct textual readings, often for the first time. This edition presents the 193 letters known to have passed between Edward Lye and forty-five correspondents between 1729 and Lye's death in 1767. Dix-huit historiens de la philosophie se sont interroges sur les significations multiples des " bonheurs " pour en conclure que le Moyen Age ne poursuivait qu'un seul bonheur, celui de l'esprit ou de l'intellect. La pluralite demeure dans le lieu et dans la maniere, dans le ou et dans le comment : dans cette vie ou dans l'autre, avec les plaisirs du corps ou en opposition a ceux-ci, au sommet de la recherche philosophique ou de l'abandon mystique. Les interventions recueillies dans ce volume concernent des auteurs ou des groupes d'auteurs compris entre le IVe et le XIVe siecles, de langue latine, arabe et - pour ce qui est du dernier siecle, de langue vulgaire. Si l'on voit chez Augustin l'importance du theme du desir et, par consequent, du souvenir d'un bonheur perdu qu'il ne faut pas poursuivre en vain, dans une vie riche d'affections et de joies licites, les penseurs suivants voudront surtout souligner le statut intellectuel d'une beatitudo qui, in via, n'est possible que par intervention directe de la Premiere Intelligence et donc grace a un contact avec celle-ci. Le retour des textes aristoteliciens, avant tout chez les auteurs qui ecrivent en langue arabe, rouvre le theme du bonheur politique, de la cohabitation bienheureuse dans un royaume bienheureux, et insiste a nouveau sur le caractere intellectuel de la vie heureuse, repris par les penseurs latins. Ces derniers, notamment dans leurs commentaires des textes aristoteliciens, affirment l'existence d'un bonheur pur de la pensee, le bonheur mental, qu'on peut distinguer du bonheur - toujours intellectuel - de la vision beatifique. Ce Livre n'etait pas destine aux Offices celebres dans l'Eglise; il etait sense etre utilise par n'importe quel laic, regulierement, aux heures canoniales, dans la solitudes de sa journee domestique. La pratique de recueillement que ce livre impliquait etait en meme temps un hommage et un lien avec la Vierge mais aussi un plaisir pour les yeux, car il fut des le debut, abondamment illustre et decore. Le Livre d'Heures devint ainsi un des joyaux dont s'enorgueillaient les plus riches et les plus nobles qui pouvaient se permettre les services des meilleures miniaturistes de l'epoque. Il fut aussi, plus modestement, celui de tout un chacun, a la mesure de ses moyens financiers. Le nombre impressionnant de le Livres d'Heures executes firent que l'on les appelle couramment aujourd'hui, les "best sellers" des derniers siecles de l'epoque medievale et ceux des annees qui suivirent l'introduction de l'impression. L'abbaye benedictine d'Einsiedeln (Suisse) est depuis des siecles une importante eglise de pelerinage. Sa bibliotheque abrite, parme des tresors insignes, douze Livres d'Heures qui sont ici etudies et publies pour la premiere fois. Leur provenance, la date d'execution et l'artiste ou l'atelier responsables de leur illustration etaient restes inconnus. Il s'est avere que parmi eux se trouvent aussi bien un manuscrit parisien d'une grande elegance , oeuvre d'un maitre repute, qu'un Livre d'Heures pittoresque et extremement rare illustre par une moniale alsacienne et destine a une nonne d'un Monastere suisse. Le corpus d'Einsiedeln comprend egalement un precieux et minuscule manuscrit flamand, ainsi qu'un Livre d'Heures "retouche" et transforme en Suisse au XVIe siecle a partir d'une ebauche abandonnee, realisee au nord de la France un siecle plus tot. Leur etudes nous a pose des problemes concernant leur datation, leur attribution et leur localisation, ainsi que la determnation du role que peut jouer un maitre au talent reconnu lors de l'illustration partielle ou totale d'un manuscrit modeste. Cette etude se propose de donner au lecteur la possibilite d'entrevoir quelques aspects de la piete du laic medieval par l'etude iconographique, liturgique et stylistique de ces douze Livres d'Heures realisees en France, dans les Flandres, dans le Rhin superieur ou en Italie, entre la fin du XIVe et le debut du XVe siecle. Poet-performers are central to understanding both literature and performance art because these entertainers, more than any other group, influenced the creation, dissemination, and interpretation of the medieval poetic oeuvre. Performance theory is used as a framework throughout. Since no social history of poet-performers exists in English, part I presents a social history that re-examines what is known about social status, cultural image and employment. Part II investigates the affective nature of performance and focuses on poet-composer-performers. This study argues that the techniques and principles of performance (body movement, gesture, voice modulation, instrumentation) and the goals of creating a memorable, even electrifying experience for audiences determine the performer's lifestyle and also the thematic and rhetorical strategies of their compositions. The itinerant poet-performer presented himself as a moral judge and critic of epoch-making political events. His performances transform time, place and people and thus become a socializing process that can change people's attitudes. Poet-minstrels were capable of re-membering the listeners' memories of the past during the intense present of the performance. Readings of several texts are offered, including romances, the political songs of well-known poet-performers (i.e. Walther von der Vogelweide) and the gnomic poets (Spruchdichter) whose songs have been neglected until now. The songs are quite intricate and multivalent as they masterfully display an aesthetic totally integrated with their performative context. In this process of transmission, translation plays a central part. Most of the texts in the anthology are translations from Latin or French into Middle English. This study provides finely detailed analyses of the texts in the textual and material context of the Amherst anthology as well as in their religious and historical contexts.
