‎Abraham Lincoln Toni Kin Qa Aesop Tawoyake Kin. Life of Abraham Lincoln and Aesop's Fables.‎

‎Santee Agency: A. L. Riggs 1893. First edition. Twelvemo 4 3/8 x 5 5/8 inches. 17 1; 10 pp. Respectively; Life of Lincoln and Aesop. Publisher's plain stiff wrappers lettered on the front. Some minor foxing to top edge of front wrapper else and exceptionally clean copy."The Reverend Alfred L. Riggs a Congregational missionary founded the Santee Normal Training School in 1870. The primary purpose of the school was to provide training and education to members of the Santee Sioux Tribe who had been exiled from their ancestral home in Minnesota following the Sioux uprising of 1862. The Tribe was first placed on a reservation at Crow Creek Dakota Territory. When this location proved poor for farming purposes with little available timber it was determined to relocate the Santee on the Niobrara River in northern Knox County Nebraska. In the summer of 1866 the Santee were moved to Nebraska accompanied by the missions of the Episcopal Church and the American Board of Foreign Missions. Under the direction of the Reverend Riggs the Santee Normal Training School became a leader in educational work among the Indians. Its graduates included ministers missionaries teachers nurses and engineers as well as farmers and blacksmiths. Many students came to Santee from other reservations throughout the Great Plains area. At one time the institution boasted 18 buildings and 480 acres of land and enrollment exceeded 200. Courses offered included history literature physics chemistry mineralogy zoology botany mathematics music and art. Instruction was also offered in vocational fields such as agriculture carpentry and home economics" Nebraska Historical Society.Riggs believed wholeheartedly that the Native Americans should assimilate and to this end he required them to be in Western garb speak English and have their hair cut in an acceptable manner. But he also and oddly believed in the retention of the Dakota language. Thus numerous items were printed in that language at the Santee Press. This was important as it gave the students something of their own even within the establishment. It is reported that translating from English to Dakota was an onerous task not undertaken lightly. The translator of the Lincoln part. James W. Garvie was just one such graduate of the Santee Normal School. He later joined the faculty at the Santee Normal Training School as the printing instructor. There he encourage his students to translate and publish in the Dakota language. Later along with Charles and John Eastman He fought for the restoration of their people’s annuity payments following the Dakota War of 1862. In the following years Garvie traveled to Washington D.C. thirteen times to represent his tribe in front of Congress before finally securing the payments in 1924. A. L. Riggs unknown‎

‎KERIAT HA-TORAH: LE-VAER HORAAT SHORESH KARA, VE-EKH SHE-HISHTAMSHU BO HAZAL BA-SHAS ... NOSAF MIKHTAV BEER REHOVOT‎

‎Period boards. 8vo, 44 pages, 17 cm. In Hebrew. Title translates to: “The Reading of the Torah: For Explaining the Root of Reading and It’s Use...with Be’er Rehovot Letter. ” “Explanation of the root of “Kara” and how it was used by the sages in the Talmud. The title page states that it will explain their intent in a clear language and explain the subject of yesh aim le-Mikra and aim le-Messorah, that is, whether a verse is to be understood as it is written or as it is read. It also addresses other issues in the Talmud built upon the structure of the Hebrew language. There are approbations from Rabbi Akiva Eger and from Rabbi Simha Wiel. An apologia from the author follows, and then the text, in a single column in rabbinic type. It begins with introductory material and continues, in the order of issues in the Talmud. After the discourses based on the Talmud is a strong refutation (33a-44b) on modifications to the accepted liturgy in the book Iggeret beit Tefillah by Isaac Satanof (1732-1804) . The latter was a Haskalah writer, who, in his book, classified every word that he explained as either "Hebrew" or "talmudic, " and proceeded to clarify this question at other opportunities as well. Satanof attempted to break out of the strict framework of biblical style, although he himself was very adept in the biblical style called melizah. Hence he demanded that new words be coined; in Iggeret Beit Tefillah he complains that the vocabulary of biblical Hebrew had not preserved its great lexical range. Rabbi Coeslin was also the author of Mesilol bedikduk Loshon ha-Kodesh. SUBJECTS: Masorah. Hebrew language -- Lexicography. Hebrew language -- Lexicography. Masorah. OCLC lists 9 copies worldwide. ‎1810 Island of Elba - French Law and Statistic‎

‎Notizen von der Insel Elba. Auszüge aus dem bulletin des Lois von Frankreich. [Notes on the Island of Elba. Excerpts from the 'Bulletin des Lois' in France.]‎

‎8vo. 8 pages. Text is in German. A scarce primary resource. This is a complete monthly issue, containing the above mentioned account. Attractively bound booklet style in recent blue paper covers with label. This issue contains a German translation of an official French document concerning laws imposed by the King of France during his reign over Elba island, when it was divided into only 7 municipalities. With brief notes on the structure of the criminal court or tribunal, and featuring a poulation chart which includes Portoferraio, Marciana, Rio, and Porto-Longone Capoliveri. In 1802 the island had become a French possession, and its economy flourished. Following the Treaty of Fontainebleau, French emperor Napoleon I was exiled to Elba after his forced abdication in 1814 and arrived at Portoferraio on May 3, 1814 to begin his exile there. He was allowed to keep a personal guard of six hundred men. Although he was nominally sovereign of Elba, the island was watched (more or less) by British naval patrols.‎

‎19th Century Student of Medicine‎

‎Journal of Manuscript Medical Notes in German, titled: "Materia Medica und Formulare nach Dr. Büchner" , [Medical Material and Formulas According to Dr. Büchner].‎

‎Manuscript notes made by a nineteenth century student of medicine, possibly intent on becoming an apothecary, who examines and records the earlier works of German physician and professor Andreas Elias Buechner (1701-1769), including numerous medicinal recipes and commentary on physiological effects. 8vo. 56 pages in manuscript. Text is in German. Marbled paper boards with blank label to front. Volume measures approximately 17 x 21 cm. Very slight wear to boards, otherwise in very good condition, internally crisp and bright. The 18th century was the 'Golden Age' of scientific academies and learned societies. This work provides valuable information on the historic application of natural ingredients with medicinal qualities, as well as a somewhat early history of the experimentation and progress in the field of medicine, by drawing from the methodology and recipes of a notable eighteenth century German physician and educator in the field - Andreas Elias Büchner. Following a five-point outline, the writer compiles a lengthy and well organized list of medical ailments or discomforts and the simple remedies for them, over 24 pages, a very small sampling of these being parageusia (a distortion of the sense of taste), digestive issues for which are listed various laxatives, skin sensitivities and emollients, "alterantia" or hormonal alterants, and diaphoretics. A section headed "Special Formulas," comprising 23 pages of more complex medicinal recipes, provides ingredients and measurements for various emulsions, syrups, pills and much more. Andreas Elias Büchner (1701-1769) was a German physician, naturalist, Professor of Medicine at some of Germany's leading institutions, president of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina from 1735 to 1769, and one of Friedrich Hoffmann's most zealous followers. ‎Ukazanie Puti v Tsarstvie Nebesnoe. Pouchenie na Aleutsko-Lis'evskom jazike sochinennoe svjaschennikom Ioannom Veniaminovym 1833 goda. Indication to the Way to the Kingdom of Heaven in Aleut language composed by Priest Ioann Veniaminov in 1833‎

‎Moscow: Sinodalnaya Typografija 1899. Fine. Octavo iv 114 paginated in Old Slavonic; old quarter sheep with marbled boards.

Rare: evangelical text translated into the Aleut language and printed in Cyrillic prepared by Ivan Veniaminov-Popov 1797-1879 the great Orthodox missionary to the northern Pacific. Veniaminov was educated in Irkutsk and as a young man he was selected for the Orthodox mission to Unalaska arriving there in 1822 with his wife and children. While there had been some successful conversions already the Church feared that Christian and indigenous beliefs had become merged. The scope of the missionary project soon expanded to include the entire Alaskan peninsula and surrounding islands a vast and often inhospitable geographical area. For ten years Veniaminov was an intrepid traveller often using small craft and kayaks to visit coastal settlements and travelling on foot through rugged mountainous regions. In 1832 he was appointed to a relatively sedentary position at Sitka as minister to the Tlingit of the Northwest Coast.

Veniaminov was a skilled linguist fluent in several dialects; he prepared this evangelical text in the Aleut language which was first published by the Moscow Synod in 1840 and later in 1899 the present edition. Both editions are rare. As a pioneer apostle to the frozen north Veniaminov was canonized Saint Innocent and holds a cherished place in the history of the Orthodox Church.

. ‎[BURUSALI] LÂMI'Î ÇELEBI (Mahmûd b. Osman b. Nakkas Ali b. Ilyas), (1472-1532).‎

‎Münâzara-i Sultan-i Bahar bâ Sehriyâr-i Sita.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) In contemporary cloth bdg. Large roy. 8vo. (25 x 17 cm). In Ottoman script. 75 p. Hegira: 1290 = Gregorian: 1873. According to Gibb, 'münazaras' were a scale for Ottoman classical poetry, but Çelebi's münazara is longer as 'mesnevis' are. This 'münazara' (= skirmish, collide) narrates the endless war of winter between spring at Uludag Mountain (with its old Byzantine name Mt. Monk) in Bursa city. This work is an allegoric poem which contains characterization of all concepts such seasons, natural events etc. Winter and Spring Kings have different armies and during this poem they fight on. Hurricane is supreme commander of winter, some flowers are soldiers of spring and full of imageries this masterpiece includes. Lami'i Çelebi named the mountain as 'Uludag' in that work firstly instead of Mt. Monk. According to Agâh Sirri Levend, Münazara was written in 1522 by Çelebi. Although Lamii has about 40 works by researchers, there are 27 works that are certain to belong to him. In the Ottoman world, he was known for his prose (mathnawi) rather than poetic works. Lamii's poem, unlike other "adaptation" is a work which was written with an original subject by him. This is First Printed Edition. Özege 14810. Extremely rare. One of the gems of Turkish literature.‎

London: Trubner & Co. 1867. First edition. Two quarto volumes. xii 456 pp.; iv7252 pp. 30 x 23 cm. The second volume has a separate title-page: KEY TO THE TZU ERH CHI. DOCUMENTARY SERIES. VOLUME I. CONTAINING TRANSLATIONS OF PAPERS 1 TO 75 AND NOTES TO PAPERS 1 TO 65 INCLUSIVE. Depsite the Volume 1 designation there were no further volumes published. Both volumes have the title in Chinese characters at the head of the title-page as well as a contemporary ink ownership of J. E. Woodruff. In worn and rubbed contemporary bindings with marbled sides. Both volumes are missing the original red leather backstrip. The spine of the first volume WEN-CHIEN TZU-ERH CHI has been neatly covered with brown cloth tape and its hinges strengthened with white cloth tape. Additionally Volume 1 shows internal and external evidence of worming. Internally the worm damage is confined to the margins without affecting the text and there are some pencil notes. Sir Thomas Francis Wade 1818-1895 a British soldier turned diplomat and Sinologist was the first professor of Chinese at Cambridge University. He developed a system of romanizing the Chinese language based on pronunciation conventions of the Beijing dialect. The system was later modified by Herbert Giles another diplomat and scholar who had succeeded him as professor of Chinese at Cambridge and became known as the Wade-Giles system. It was widely used throughout much of the twentieth century to represent the sounds of Mandarin in Western publications and is still used to represent some personal and place names. This work was prepared with the express purpose of preparing individuals destined to join Her Majesty's Consular Service in China with the written language of government as it appeared in books and in official correspondence. ‎[Crow Language]‎

‎Prayers in the Crow Indian Language Composed by the Missionaries of the Society of Jesus‎

‎De Smet Id: De Smet Mission 1891. Very good plus. 210pp. Gathered signatures never bound into the original printed wrappers. Minor edge wear. Untrimmed. A rare prayerbook printed in the Siouan language of Crow with headings printed in Latin. The work was published by the missionaries of the Society of Jesus at their De Smet Mission Press in Idaho. The present copy begins with the title page which reads "Preces Lingua Absavuki seu Corvorum Indorum." This copy lacks wrappers most likely because according to Schoenberg "Though published separately this work often appears bound with other imprints from the same press particularly with Cataldo's Catechism and the Selecta ex Historia Sacra." As such this copy was very likely reserved by the missionaries in De Smet for inclusion in a sammelband and thus lacks the wrappers.

"It is probable that the greatest portion of the work was done by Prando recognized by the Jesuits as their greatest authority on the Crow language" - Schoenberg.
Schoenberg Jesuit Mission Presses 74. ‎[EARLY ENGLISH LANGUAGE MAP OF YOKOHAMA SETTLEMENT].‎

‎Hand Map of Yokohama.‎

‎Yokohama. 1867. Map 25 x 35.3cm some creasing where it was once folded a few old repairs to corners with s closed tear along the upper margin sheet browned with a little spotting now professionally backed onto washi. Text in English. Scarce map. This scarce historically significant map depicts Yokohama’s foreign settlement shortly before the devastating fire of 26 November 1866. Known contemporaneously as the Butaya 豚屋 “Pork Shop” Fire or the Kannai 関内 Fire the blaze began in a pork restaurant and rapidly engulfed the adjoining brothel quarter resulting in the deaths of more than 400 prostitutes. One third of the Japanese quarter and approximately one quarter of the foreign settlement were destroyed.

The map offers a valuable record of the township as it appeared prior to the disaster. It clearly marks the English and French Consulates the English and French wharfs and the English Naval Yard. Also shown is the well-known brothel Gankirō 岩亀楼 situated in the upper central area which catered to Western clientele.

Yokohama had opened as a treaty port in 1859 and Western residents quickly established themselves near the waterfront.

Following the 1866 fire the foreign concession was rebuilt in Western architectural styles while the brothel district was relocated outside the concession boundary. . unknown‎
