‎Petrus Naghel Gulden Legende De Middelnederlandse vertaling van de 'Legenda aurea' door Petrus Naghel, uitgegeven naar handschrift Brussel, Koninklijke Bibliotheek, 15140. Deel II,‎

‎The importance of the Legenda aurea for the Late Middle Ages can hardly be overestimated, as witness the impressive manuscript tradition of the original Latin text as well the different vernacular versions. This huge hagiographic collection, organised per circulum anni, can be considered as a compendium of the medieval religious worldview: it offers insights into the (deuterocanonic) tradition of the New Testament, the lives and deaths of the most important saints, the history of the church of Rome, and it can be read as a catechism in narrative form. But the Legenda aurea is also a treasure-trove of stories, motifs and themes splendidly reflecting medieval mentality in its entirety. The influence of the Legenda aurea on literature and iconography is so far-reaching, that the book is an indispensable aid for the 'reading' of countless medieval texts, paintings and sculptures. The text was translated several times into Middle Dutch and of the first southern Dutch translation (ca. 1357), made by Petrus Naghel (? 1395) in the Charterhouse of Herne, a modern edition is now available. This edition of the Gulden legende - the second volume of a set of two - contains the legends of Pope Urban to the Feast of Church Dedication, and carries a concise introduction. The first volume of the set will appear in print in 2013; it contains the remaining legends and an expansive introduction comprising an introduction of text and translator, a description of the manuscript used for the edition, a statement of editorial policy and indices of names.

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2008 Hardcover. XVI 223 p., 80 b/w ill., 165 x 240 mm, Languages: Italian, French, English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503528465.‎

‎Seeing and Knowing Women and Learning in Medieval Europe, 1200-1550,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2004 Hardback, X+205 p., 1 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503514482.‎

‎The studies within this volume apply insights gained from gender studies to re-consider the way knowledge and learning was transmitted in medieval Europe 1200-1550. Traditional scholarship has largely concentrated on the clerical and academic context of conventional learning. It tended to focus on the contents and methods of formal education, as well as on a small group of educational institutions from which women were excluded. In this volume, authors consider how learning was transmitted outside the schools, in particular within women's communities. They raise a range of questions: how was knowledge transmitted in an oral context, what varieties of knowledge were available to communities of women? What kinds of learning are characteristic of such communities? What techniques did women develop to preserve and transmit their knowledge and how was it valorized both within their communities, and by 'authoritative' outsiders? Under what circumstances could women themselves gain authority in passing on knowledge to a wider audience? Languages : English.‎

‎In light of the revival of diachronic linguistics and the burgeoning attention for Middle French, the present volume brings together several papers on Middle French text linguistics. Which linguistic elements contribute to text structuring in this period ? What guarantees textual cohesion and topic continuity? The contributions in this volume set out to explore these domains, describing the use of a range of connectors, modality markers and punctuation devices, analysing the mechanisms underlying the functioning of anaphoric expressions and of topicalising and focalising constructions.‎

‎Urban Carnival Festive Culture in the Hanseatic Cities of the Eastern Baltic, 1350-1550,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2005 Hardback, XXVI+374 p., 17 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503515212.‎

‎This is a significant new study of the festival culture of northern Europe in the later Middle Ages: more specifically of the German-speaking communities of the great cities of the eastern Baltic littoral in what was then called Livonia, corresponding roughly to the territories of present-day Estonia and Latvia. While subject to a degree of Scandinavian influence, the festival culture of Livonian cities such as Riga, Reval (Tallinn), and Dorpat (Tartu), which were members of the Hanseatic League, substantially overlapped with that of other German-speaking areas, not least the Hanseatic cities of northern Germany. The major part of the book is devoted to the main annual festivals of the merchants' guilds: Christmas, Carnival, the popinjay shoot, and the May Count celebrations. There follows an analysis of specific aspects of the festivals: spatial contexts, finances, food and drink, entertainments (dances, jousts, games), customs and rituals. There is also a concluding glance at changes in festival culture after the Reformation. The study combines close scrutiny of local customs (made possible by the almost miraculous survival of uniquely detailed documentation), contextualization within the wider comparative context of festival culture in late-medieval Europe, and an alterness to significant recent scholarship in both English and German. Jackson was born in New York City on February 9, 1862. He graduated from Columbia University in 1883. He was a fellow in letters there from 1883 to 1886, and an instructor in Anglo-Saxon and the Iranian languages from 1887 to 1890. After study at the University of Halle from 1887 to 1889 he became an adjunct professor of English language and literature. In 1895, he was appointed public lecturer and also appointed to the newly founded professorship of Indo-Iranian languages at Columbia University, where he remained until 1935. He was well known as a lecturer on English literature and the Orient. In 1901, during a visit to India and Ceylon, he received special attention from the Parsees, who presented to Columbia a valuable collection of Zoroastrian manuscripts in recognition of the instruction there given by him in their ancient texts. In 1903 he made a second journey to the Orient, this time visiting Iran. He also visited Central Asia sometime before 1918. Jackson's grammar of Avestan, the language used in the Zoroastrian scriptures, is still considered to be the seminal work on the topic. ‎Dictionnaire de l'Islam,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1995 Hardback, 380 p., 165 x 235 mm. ISBN 9782503504018.‎

Languages : French.‎

‎Aaron Marshall Elliott (1844-1910) of Johns Hopkins University, language scholar, helped found Modern Language Association; Davi‎

‎Professor A. Marshall Elliott of Johns Hopkins University; George Francis Scott-Elliot botanist; and David Douglas Edinburgh publisher Correspondence relating to Scott-Elliot's 'The Border Elliots'.‎

‎Douglas's letter: On letterhead of 9 Castle Street Edinburgh; 2 October 1900. Villa Reale Bad Ems; 6 September 1900. Marshall Elliott's letter headed British Museum Library 11 July 1900. Four items aged and somewhat creased. Scott-Elliot's book was privately printed by Douglas in 1897. Aaron Marshall Elliott was founder of the Modern Language Association and founding professor of Romance Languages at Johns Hopkins University. ONE: ALS from Aaron Marshall Hall to David Douglas 2pp. 8vo asking him if he could supply a copy of G.F.S. Elliott's "The Border Elliotts" giving publishing history and mentioning his work on American Elliotts which he hopes to publish. He also asks for an introduction to the author introducing himself Professor at Johns Hopkins etc ands currently "Official Delegate of the U.S. Government to the Paris Exhibition. I have an enviable reputation in the States for my literary and scientific work." TWO: ALS from 'David Douglas' to Elliot. 2 October 1900s. 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium. The letter begins: 'When I had the pleasure of seeing you I had an indistinct recollection of some one wishing to communicate with you regarding "The Border Elliots" - but could not remember the name - On coming home yesterday my clerk shewed me the enclosed letter.' He explains that he has had a letter sent to the address of Item Two below returned to him and that he has since 'sent it to Baltimore where I hope Professor Elliot will get it in due time - I told him there was no hope of his getting a copy at present but if he communicated with Quaritch or Sotherans they would look out for any copy that might come onto the market'. He is sending Item Two on. Docketed by Elliot: 'Letter of Prof. Marshal Elliot abt "Border Elliots" Oct. 3 I saw D. D. about this - He does not want the letter back G. E.' THREE: ALS from 'A. Marshall Elliott' to Douglas. 6 September 1900. 2pp 12mo. Bifolium. On cancelled letterhead of the Hotel Engadiner-Kulm St. Moritz Engadine. Neatly and closely written. He writes that he has been 'engaged in genealogical researches' in 'the Elliots of America United States' at the British Museum where he has 'had the great Pleasure of frequently consulting your magnificent work on the "Border Elliots". He would like a copy of Elliot's 'inexhaustible treatise' as it would be 'of inestimable value' and a work of 'constant reference'. In attempting to explain his 'fitness for the task I have undertaken' he states: 'I am Professor in the John Hopkins University of Baltimore U.S. that I have an enviable reputation for my literary work in America and that I have been more or less occupied with genealogical research all my life. I am now acting as Special Delegate of the United States to the Paris Exhibition where I have spent the greater part of this summer.' He boasts that he is 'acquainted with the geographical history of the Chief Elliot Eliot branches both in England & Scotland having personally visited St. Germas Godalming; Redheugh Loniston Stobs Wolflee Hawick & Minto House.' FOUR: Autograph Copy Signed of letter from 'Geo. S. Elliot' to Professor A. M. Elliott. On letterhead of Corwar Newton Stewart N.B.; 10 September 1900. 3pp. 12mo. Bifolium. He regrets that he can do little to assist Elliott 'in follg up the histy of the Elliots & extendg it to those in the New World'. Regarding his book he explains: 'the case stands thus: - When it came out Mr D. Douglas the publisher Edinb. had a certain number of copies for sale but these have long since been disposed of … The bulk of the issue I retained in my own hands for private distribution & unfortunately this source too is almost entirely exhausted'. He praises Elliott as 'one who takes so great interest in the subject & who is engaged in further developing it - Besides I have sufficient clan feeling remaining not to treat with indifference anythg comg from one of our name.' Douglas's letter: On letterhead of 9 Castle Street, Edinburgh; 2 October 1900. Villa Reale, Bad Ems; 6 September 1900. Marshall unknown‎
