Allerdings scheint die in den Quellen fassbare scharfe Dichotomie zwischen Republik und Monarchie eher dem Bedurfnis der Tragergruppen republikanischer Ordnungen als den tatsachlichen Verhaltnissen entsprochen zu haben. Letztere sind vielmehr durch fliessende Ubergange von der Monarchie zur Republik und umgekehrt gekennzeichnet die erklarungsbedurftig sind.Ziel des Bandes ist ein Interpretationsmodell zu entwickeln das die Dynamik und Entwicklungsoffenheit solcher Prozesse ernst nimmt; dazu reicht eine reine Rekonstruktion historischer Kausalitaten nicht aus.
