For Henry, the gift represented a literary and political coup. With all the rhetorical skill of a learned poet, Nagonius presented the King as a classical hero on an epic scale in the latest Italian style. The work thus acknowledged Henry's international significance. Other recipients of Nagonius's panegyric verse include Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, Vladislav II of Bohemia, Louis XII of France, Doge Leonardo Loredan, the condottieri Niccolo Orsini and Gian Giacomo Trivulzio, Giovanni Bentivoglio, lord of Bologna, and Duke Ercole d'Este of Ferrara. They are loosely contained in a white folder, inside which, from the second series onwards, is the imprint of their product Melleril. We think that there were 25 editions of the series and some are more scarce than others. They were subsequently published by S Karger of Basel as 4 collections. Volume 1 (Series 1-6)(1966) Volume 2 (Series 7-12)(1967) Volume 3 (Series 13-18)(1973) and Volume 4 (Series 19-22 and 25)(1978). All these editions are out of print, although the latter one is comparatively widely available in the antiquarian book market for around $100US. The item described here is one of the original sets, having previously belonged to a psychiatrist working at the time. They each consist of a number of 31x23 cm card prints (see individual description for number) and a commentary of up to 8 pages. The author specified in the title is the author of the commentary. The artists of the individual works are not credited for their intellectual or physical property. The collections are remarkable in this day and age for the confident assertions by the commentators of the distinctions between 'art' and 'pathology'. It is difficult to assess from reading them what each author knows about either. Some of the narrative of the difficult personal and environmental circumstance of the artists is of enormous interest to the art and medicine historian. We thought about displaying the images to illuminate our website, but feel that without the permission of the artists we would be compounding the legal breach made by the original publishers PsychoBabel Books and Journals offers these for sale without any claims that Melleril may improve your painting technique, or make your expressiveness classifiable as 'normal' by a 1960s vintage psychiatrist, or whether it will make you give up painting altogether. The English imported manuscripts and texts from the Continent, whilst a series of foreign masters, from Theodore of Tarsus to Abbo of Fleury, brought with them knowledge of works which were being studied in Continental schools. Although monastic education played a leading role for the entire Anglo-Saxon period, it was in the second half of the tenth and early eleventh centuries that it reached its zenith, with its renewed importance and the presence of energetic masters such as AEthelwold and AElfric. ISBN 9780888442918.‎ ‎The birth and flowering of canonical jurisprudence in the twelfth century is one of the most striking and fruitful developments of the age, marking an important turn in the history of the Church and in framing the essential elements of the rule of law in political and social life. Raymond of Penyafort was an important participant in these developments. Born near Barcelona in 1175, he became a teacher of canon law at Bologna, the greatest centre of legal studies. He joined the newly founded Order of Preachers (Dominicans), and championed multilingual education of the friars for a more effective evangelization of Muslims and Jews. He became Master General of the Order in 1238, and died in 1275. He was canonized in 1601 and has been declared the patron saint of canon lawyers. Pope Gregory IX appointed Raymond to produce a comprehensive compilation of papal legal decisions. The result, the Decretals of Gregory IX (1234), would remain normative in the Catholic Church until 1917. Raymond drew on it to compose his Summa on Marriage, a summary of learned reflection on the law of marriage, to aid his Dominican brothers in hearing confessions, where numerous problems touching on marriage would have been encountered. The definition of marriage and of its ends, stages and impediments, arrangements and consequences are the subject of the work. Published during the Peninsular War (three months prior to the Battle of Leipzig), this is an analysis and German translation of an important and comprehensive treatise by Isidore of Antillón, dealing with astronomical and political geography of Spain and Portugal, perhaps for elucidation and strategy of war. The Spanish title scrutinized, "Elementos de la Geografia Astronomica Natural y Política de España y Portugal," was published in Madrid, 1808. Thorough descriptions include Spanish provinces of New Castile, Old Castile, Extremadura, the Kingdoms of Murcia, Jaén, Cordoba, Aragon, Valencia, Seville, Granada, Navarre, Leon, and Galicia, the principalities of Asturias and Catalonia, the Basque provinces, Álava, Biscaya, and also the Balearic Islands. Also featuring important Spanish presidios or fortresses, and plazas de soberanía in North Africa, specifically Ceuta, Penon de Velez de la Gomera, Peñón de Alhucemas, and Melilla, and of course, historic ports such as Alicante. The analysis of territorial divisions and transformation goes as far back as Roman emperor Julius Caesar Augustus who divided Hispania Ulterior into three administrative regions of Lusitania, Baetica, and Tarraconensis.
