Victoria: T.N. Hibben & Company 1871. 26pp. Original printed wrappers. Minor soiling to covers else very good or better. The earliest citation for the Chinook Jargon is George Gibbs' 1863 edition for the Smithsonian Institution but even there the preface cites an earlier version furnished by a B.R. Mitchell of the U.S. Navy also for the Smithsonian. The present edition is most likely a reprint of the first Hibben edition around 1871. As trading developed throughout the Pacific Northwest this little volume was in high demand. It was reprinted over fifty times this being one of the earlier editions. Inscrption on ffep. The illustrations are by Damwon Kim Chang-bae who was born in Seosan in the South Chungcheong province in western part of South Korea. He is the 71st generation descendant of King Kim Su-ro a founder of Geumgwan Gaya - the ruling city-state of the Gaya confederacy during the Three Kingdoms the 10th generation descendant of master of traditional Korean painting Kim Hong-do Danweon.The inscriptions seem to be in his handwriting. A publicity card from the artist's gallery in Seoul is laid in. Text in Korean English and some Japanese.In original box wihich has slight crack at top. Hargrett credits this work to Alfred Wright and Cyrus Byington first published in Boston in 1830. Missionaries among the Choctaw for decades they are responsible for a number of works in the Choctaw language. The hymns with translator's initials at the end of each take up the first two hundred pages followed by the Articles of Faith the baptism and marriage rituals twenty-five pages of hymns in English and an index of first lines. Il se présentait à moi sous trois volets violemment contrastés le musulman et le chrétien avec entre eux le monde juif auquel j'appartenais. Pour m'en convaincre ma mère m'inondait de ses prières. La maison était immémorablement habitée par la Bible hébraïque lue proclamée dans sa langue originale l'hébreu. Israël était si présent en nos vies qu'il était impossible d'échapper à sa présence. Partout nous gardions religieusement le souvenir du passé glorieux de nos ancêtres. Exilés de notre terre la Judée dans nos exils nous n'avions qu'une mission celle de conserver la mémoire de notre passé dont nous cultivions les souvenirs et qu'un but voir notre peuple ressusciter un jour sur sa terre. Ainsi ma longue route jalonnée de livres a-t-elle abouti à cette édition définitive en deux volumes de L'Histoire des Juifs en Afrique du Nord. Histoire née d'une seule interrogation et d'une même angoisse : d'où venons-nous et où allons-nous Au seuil de l'ère atomique la plupart des Juifs sont de retour sur la terre d'Israël dont ils partirent voici deux millénaires. En Afrique du Nord d'eux il ne reste rien sinon leurs cimetières. Ces pages racontent leur singulière histoire qui partie du Maghreb renaît en ses sources sous le ciel de Jérusalem.
