Constitues au fil du temps par des erudits ou par des equipes de chercheurs, ce materiel est susceptible de rendre d?enormes services a tous ceux qui souhaitent retrouver les manuscrits ayant conserve une oeuvre donnee ou bien encore identifier l?auteur d?un ouvrage considere jusqu?a present comme anonyme. Pour le moyen age, l?incipit d?un manuscrit ou d?une oeuvre, c?est-a-dire les premiers mots d?un texte, est le seul moyen tout a fait sur d?identification. Beaucoup de textes medievaux sont anonymes ou faussement attribues. Seul l?incipit peut alors servir a reperer les differents manuscrits qui conservent encore actuellement une oeuvre donnee. Des recherches peuvent etre faites sur differentes zones afin d?obtenir l?ensemble de la documentation concernant un incipit. L?ensemble du materiel sera publie en quatre volumes. Le dernier comprendra des index d?auteurs, de bibliotheques et de titres pour faciliter la consultation des donnees. Nous esperons donc que ce nouveau repertoire accessible dans les cabinets de manuscrits constituera une aide precieuse lors des recherches menees sur un manuscrit.‎

L?effort d?uniformisation qui a ete fait pour les realiser apparait immediatement et constitue un apport irremplacable a la documentation deja rassemblee dans les trois volumes precedents. Pour etre certain d?avoir reuni tous les renseignements necessaires, le chercheur doit se livrer a plusieurs interrogations successives qui sont indispensables. Ces interrogations complementaires eviteront de laisser echapper une information pertinente et de passer a cote d?un manuscrit important. ‎Tolomeo Fiadoni (1236-1327) was one of the most remarkable of medieval writers. Living to almost one hundred years of age, Tolomeo bore witness to some of the most important events of the period. He studied and travelled with Thomas Aquinas and was elected Dominican prior in Lucca and Florence. He attended the saintly Pope Celestine V during Celestine's doomed reign, lived at the papal court in Avignon, served in the households of two cardinals, and associated with the infamous Pope John XXII. At the age of eighty, Tolomeo was appointed bishop of Torcello in the Venetian Lagoon, where his superior, the Patriarch of Grado, subsequently excommunicated and jailed him. Tolomeo is known today for his major contribution to republican political thought, most notably his continuation of Thomas Aquinas's only political treatise. However, he also wrote treatises on imperial and ecclesiastical power, a commentary on the six days of creation, a massive Church history, and a European history from 1063 onward. Drawn from all known surviving sources, The Life and Works of Tolomeo Fiadoni is the first full-length study of Tolomeo's life. It discusses each of his works, and addresses numerous problems of authorship and dating. ‎Nota Bene explores a little-known juxtaposition of verbal text and musical notation in the Middle Ages. This particular intersection deserves attention from those interested in music, the reception of classical Latin literature, the history of education, and the development of punctuation. Between the late tenth century and the late twelfth century, the musical notation known as neumes was provided in dozens of manuscripts for, among other texts, a number of Horace's Odes as well as for sections of epics by Lucan, Statius, and Vergil. These materials constitute a paradoxical corpus of "classical poems in plainchant" that complicates our views of both how students learned Latin and what was being sung in an era most often associated with Gregorian chant. The book wrestles first with the literary-historical puzzle of why certain passages and not others were "neumed" and later with the ethnomusicological riddles of how, where, when, and by whom the passages were sung. ‎L'apparition des Mongols, surgissant dans les premieres decennies du XIIIe siecle des profondeurs de l'Asie, a change le destin de l'Europe orientale. Elle a en meme temps ouvert aux Europeens de l'Ouest les routes de l'Asie. Depuis la fin de l'epoque romaine, des peuples venus des steppes s'etaient succedes, penetrant a plusieurs reprises, plus ou moins profondement dans l'espace europeen ou plusieurs d'entre eux s'etaient implantes. Les Occidentaux ne s'etaient guere preoccupes de s'informer das causes de ces migrations et de leur llieu d'origine. La premiere campagne mongole en 1222 n'avait pas inquiete l'Occident. Il en fut autrement de la seconde, pendant laquelle les "Tartares" arriverent en Hongrie en 1237 et poursuivirent leur avance en direction de l'Ouest; mais cette menace s'estompa vers 1260. Il fallut pour que les choses changent, que le danger se rapproche des terres franques du royaume latin d'Orient. C'est lorsque les Mongols menacent Antioche, en 1243, que l'on commence a s'emouvoir. Et c'est alors qu'apparaissent les ambassades, qui seront en meme temps des voyages de decouverte. Ce sont ces relations de voyage, les unes developpees, les autres tres breves, qui sont presentees dans ce recueil. On y lira les temoignages suivants: l'emergence de l'image du Pretre Jean chez Otton de Freising, la Relation de David (en deux versions), les renseignements donnes a Mathieu Paris par Andre de Longjumeau, l'Histoire des Tartares de Simon de Saint-Quentin, des lettres du gouverneur de Perse Eljigidei ou celle de Hulegu a Saint Louis, ou celle du connetable d'Armenie a des cousins francs. Tous ces documents anterieurs aux voyages de Marco Polo nous offrent un apercu inedit en traduction francaise de la facon dont les occidentaux ont essaye de s'informer sur la civilisation et le monde mongols dans la deuxieme moitie du XIIIe siecle. ‎This book explores the legal and theological thought of Master Vacarius (c.1115/20 - c.1200), the renowned twelfth-century jurist. It focuses on this Italian master's four works, composed in the second half of the twelfth century, which deal with the resolution of conflict in law and theology. Vacarius is a paradox for scholars. They have found it difficult to reconcile his role as a legal teacher, notably through his textbook the Liber pauperum ('Book of the Poor'), which established a school of Roman law at Oxford, with his extra-legal' works on marriage, Christology and heretical theology. This study accounts for this paradox by exploring these three extra-legal treatises, composed in the 1160s and 1170s, in light of Vacarius' legal textbook. The author argues that Vacarius applies the legal method of the ius commune (European common law) to theological and sacramental debates. In this way, Vacarius represents a trend in medieval intellectual history, particular to the twelfth-century renaissance, which has been little appreciated to date - the hermeneutic of the 'lawyer-theologian'. ‎Ce quatrieme volume bilingue (francais-anglais) est ne des echanges d'une journee d'etude qui s'est deroulee au printemps 1999 a Sherbrooke au Quebec. Plusieurs etudes ont ete ajoutees aux communications presentees a cette occasion. Toutes tentent de repondre a la question : quels textes evangeliques pouvait-on lire en francais avant l'installation definitive de Calvin a Geneve et la publication de la premiere version francaise de l'Institution de la religion chrestienne de 1541 ? Les approches de ces contributions sont tres diverses, envisageant tantot les auteurs, tantot les imprimeurs, mais aussi la constitution des bibliotheques, l'histoire de l'art, la traduction-adaptation des textes, la presence d'epigraphe sur la page de titre, etc. Guillaume Farel est un peu l'ame de la Reforme francaise a ses debuts. Un chapitre presente l'ensemble de son action pour le livre, un autre analyse son oeuvre majeure, le Summaire. Marguerite de Navarre a ete le grand soutien des evangeliques. Elle n'est pas seulement presente a travers l'etude d'un catechisme dont elle a commande une copie manuscrite, mais aussi dans la plupart des autres etudes. Une autre femme, sa protegee, Marie d'Ennetieres, fait l'objet de deux travaux. Par ailleurs, il est question de l'action des imprimeurs, Martin Lempereur a Anvers, Pierre de Vingle a Geneve et Neuchatel. D'autres approches sont encore proposees : l'etude de la bibliotheque d'Anne Boleyn, la reecriture et l'expurgation d'une preface d'Erasme, le recours a l'epigraphe Lisez et jugez sur les pages de titre. L'etude de la fin d'un best-seller catholique souligne en contre-point la montee du livre evangelique. Enfin un chapitre de conclusion tente une vue d'ensemble sur le destin du livre evangelique en francais avant l'entree en scene de Jean Calvin.
