Il publia ainsi une biographie de Goethe en 1920 puis de Bismarck entre 1922 et 1924 de Napol�on en 1925 de Michel-Ange en 1930 et enfin de Cl�op�tre en 1937. Converti au catholicisme � l'�ge de 21 ans il y renon�a en 1922 � la suite du meurtre du ministre des affaires �trang�res Walter Rathenau. Reconnu comme un citoyen suisse en 1932 il �migre aux �tats-Unis en 1940. Son d�go�t du r�gime nazi l'a amen� � travailler pour le gouvernement am�ricain en 1940 pour lequel il a �crit de virulents pamphlets anti-fascistes.
