‎Qu'est-ce que les hommes du Moyen Age entendaient par bonheur ? La vision beatifique peut-etre, les plaisirs de l'intellect, la jouissance des sens, ou encore une vie sociale pacifique ? Dix-huit historiens de la philosophie se sont interroges sur les significations multiples des " bonheurs " pour en conclure que le Moyen Age ne poursuivait qu'un seul bonheur, celui de l'esprit ou de l'intellect. La pluralite demeure dans le lieu et dans la maniere, dans le ou et dans le comment : dans cette vie ou dans l'autre, avec les plaisirs du corps ou en opposition a ceux-ci, au sommet de la recherche philosophique ou de l'abandon mystique. Les doctrines sur le bonheur se presentent donc sous de multiples facettes : definition du bonheur eternel, quete d'un possible bonheur ici-bas et definition de celui-ci, rapport et difference entre les deux, valeur ou non-valeur de l'un par rapport a l'autre. Les interventions recueillies dans ce volume concernent des auteurs ou des groupes d'auteurs compris entre le IVe et le XIVe siecles, de langue latine, arabe et - pour ce qui est du dernier siecle, de langue vulgaire. Si l'on voit chez Augustin l'importance du theme du desir et, par consequent, du souvenir d'un bonheur perdu qu'il ne faut pas poursuivre en vain, dans une vie riche d'affections et de joies licites, les penseurs suivants voudront surtout souligner le statut intellectuel d'une beatitudo qui, in via, n'est possible que par intervention directe de la Premiere Intelligence et donc grace a un contact avec celle-ci. Le retour des textes aristoteliciens, avant tout chez les auteurs qui ecrivent en langue arabe, rouvre le theme du bonheur politique, de la cohabitation bienheureuse dans un royaume bienheureux, et insiste a nouveau sur le caractere intellectuel de la vie heureuse, repris par les penseurs latins. Ces derniers, notamment dans leurs commentaires des textes aristoteliciens, affirment l'existence d'un bonheur pur de la pensee, le bonheur mental, qu'on peut distinguer du bonheur - toujours intellectuel - de la vision beatifique. L'issue de cette union ou de cette opposition est encore differente chez certains auteurs du XIVe siecle, ou nous rencontrons plus facilement la metaphore du " toucher " que celle du " voir ".‎

‎This volume is comprised of translations of a trilogy of Cistercian lives composed by the same hagiographer at the celebrated abbey of Villers in Brabant. In the early thirteenth century the diocese of Liege witnessed an extraordinary religious revival, known to us largely through the abundant corpus of saints' lives from that region. Cistercian monks, nuns, beguines, and recluses formed close-knit networks of spiritual friendship that easily crossed the boundaries of gender, religious status, and even language. Holy women such as Mary of Oignies and Christina the Astonishing were held up by their biographers as models of orthodoxy and miraculous powers. Less familiar but no less fascinating are the male saints of the region. In this volume Martinus Cawley, ocso, has translated a trilogy of Cistercian lives composed by the same hagiographer, Goswin, who was a monk and cantor at the celebrated abbey of Villers in Brabant. Although all three of these saints were connected with the same order, their versions of holiness represent a study in contrasts, from the compassionate nun Ida of Nivelles, remarkable for her eucharistic raptures, to the fiercely ascetic lay brother Arnulf, to the gentle monk Abundus, renowned for his deep liturgical and Marian piety. ‎The linguistic situation of medieval Europe has sometimes been characterized as one of diglossia: one learned language, Latin, was used for religion, law, and documents, while the various vernaculars were used in other linguistic registers. Informing the relationship between Latin and the vernaculars was the choice of Latin as the language of the Western Roman Empire and the Roman Church. This choice entailed the possibility of a shared literary culture and heritage across Europe, but also had consequences for access to that heritage. Scholarship on the Romance languages has contested the relevance of the term diglossia, and the divergence between written or spoken Latin and Romance is a subject of energetic debate. In other linguistic areas, too, questions have been voiced. How can one characterize the interaction between Latin and the various vernaculars, and between the various vernaculars themselves? To what extent could speakers from separate linguistic worlds communicate? These questions are fundamental for anyone concerned with communication, the transmission of learning, literary history, and cultural interaction in the Middle Ages. This volume contains contributions by historians, cultural historians, and students of texts, language, and linguistics, addressing the subject from their various perspectives but at the same time trying to overcome familiar disciplinary divisions.‎

‎One of the most skilful forgeries of the Middle Ages, the Cosmography of Aethicus Ister has puzzled scholars for over 150 years, not least because of its challenging Latinity. Written at a western centre in the first part of the eighth century, the work purports to be a heavily censored epitome made by St. Jerome of a ?cosmography? by an Istrian philosopher named Aethicus. This writer, who is otherwise unknown, describes a flat-earth universe resembling that of Cosmas Indicopleustes, then gives an eye-witness account of his travels to the ?isles of the gentiles? in the North and East. There he encounters not only savage races, but also monsters, Amazons, and other figures of mythology. Alexander the Great also figures prominently by immuring the ?unclean races,? who will escape to ravage the world at the coming of the Anti-Christ. Not all is fiction. The author?s observations on volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis will interest the scientific reader. The last part deals in coded fashion with contemporary events in the eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans, and may provide a clue to the author?s origins. The present volume offers a new critical text, the first translation, and a detailed commentary covering every aspect of the work. Michael W. ‎En los florilegios se reunen obras muy diferentes en su planteamiento, genero y epoca formando una obra nueva con un plan y un tratamiento unitario, de manera que los escritores de la literatura latina clasica pueden convivir con los autores cristianos y medievales, contemporaneos en algunos casos al compilador del florilegio. Ademas, en ellos se realiza una lectura particular de los textos originales y una interpretacion acorde con la finalidad buscada por el compilador, de forma que cada obra pierde sus caracteristicas individuales y los rasgos del genero en el que se escribio, al sufrir un proceso de reescritura comun. En este volumen se presentan diversas formas de encuentro y convivencia de los autores antiguos y medievales ofrecidas en los florilegios latinos, prestando especial atencion a los manuscritos conservados en Espana. ‎In de periode 1360-85 ontstond de eerste vrijwel complete Nederlandse prozavertaling van de bijbel. Tot aan de Reformatie bleef zij de belangrijkste toegang tot de bijbel in de volkstaal. De vertaling werd vervaardigd door Petrus Naghel (overl. 1 mei 1395), een kartuizer uit het klooster te Herne, die ook tal van andere werken uit de christelijke traditie in het Middelnederlands overzette. Zijn opdrachtgever was Jan Taye, een getrouwde man met kinderen, die enige malen schepen in het stadsbestuur van Brussel was. Zijn bemoeienis, als leek van eenvoudige adel, met het ontstaan van een bijbelvertaling is zelfs in Europees perspectief hoogst opmerkelijk. Centraal in deze studie staat de Historiebijbel van 1361, die Naghel op 23 juni 1361 voltooide. Een historiebijbel bevat uitsluitend de historische boeken van de bijbel, veelal rijkelijk voorzien van commentaren en tal van andere teksten, soms van geheel profane aard. In acht hoofdstukken worden diverse aspecten van de Historiebijbel behandeld, zoals: de persoon van de vertaler en diens opdrachtgever, alsmede de historische bronnen die ons hierbij ten dienste staan; de oorspronkelijke opzet van de tekst; de waarde van de oudste handschriften voor onze kennis van receptie en productie van de tekst; de bewerkingstechniek die Petrus Naghel toepaste; de maatschappelijke en sociale factoren die een rol speelden bij de productie van historiebijbel-handschriften; de (vermeende) relatie met de Franse bijbelvertaling; de factoren die uiteindelijk hebben verhinderd dat Naghels bijbelvertaling door leken werd gelezen, waarbij met name dieper wordt ingegaan op de rol van de Moderne devotie. In het laatste en negende hoofdstuk wordt de meest recente stand van het onderzoek ten aanzien van Naghels vertalingen kritisch besproken. Het boek wordt ingeleid door Geert Claassens, die als leerstoelhouder voor Middelnederlandse letterkunde aan de KU Leuven een onderzoeksproject over Petrus Naghel leidt.‎

Ce Livre n'etait pas destine aux Offices celebres dans l'Eglise; il etait sense etre utilise par n'importe quel laic, regulierement, aux heures canoniales, dans la solitudes de sa journee domestique. La pratique de recueillement que ce livre impliquait etait en meme temps un hommage et un lien avec la Vierge mais aussi un plaisir pour les yeux, car il fut des le debut, abondamment illustre et decore. Le Livre d'Heures devint ainsi un des joyaux dont s'enorgueillaient les plus riches et les plus nobles qui pouvaient se permettre les services des meilleures miniaturistes de l'epoque. Il fut aussi, plus modestement, celui de tout un chacun, a la mesure de ses moyens financiers. Le nombre impressionnant de le Livres d'Heures executes firent que l'on les appelle couramment aujourd'hui, les "best sellers" des derniers siecles de l'epoque medievale et ceux des annees qui suivirent l'introduction de l'impression. L'abbaye benedictine d'Einsiedeln (Suisse) est depuis des siecles une importante eglise de pelerinage. Sa bibliotheque abrite, parme des tresors insignes, douze Livres d'Heures qui sont ici etudies et publies pour la premiere fois. Leur provenance, la date d'execution et l'artiste ou l'atelier responsables de leur illustration etaient restes inconnus. Il s'est avere que parmi eux se trouvent aussi bien un manuscrit parisien d'une grande elegance , oeuvre d'un maitre repute, qu'un Livre d'Heures pittoresque et extremement rare illustre par une moniale alsacienne et destine a une nonne d'un Monastere suisse. Le corpus d'Einsiedeln comprend egalement un precieux et minuscule manuscrit flamand, ainsi qu'un Livre d'Heures "retouche" et transforme en Suisse au XVIe siecle a partir d'une ebauche abandonnee, realisee au nord de la France un siecle plus tot. Leur etudes nous a pose des problemes concernant leur datation, leur attribution et leur localisation, ainsi que la determnation du role que peut jouer un maitre au talent reconnu lors de l'illustration partielle ou totale d'un manuscrit modeste. Cette etude se propose de donner au lecteur la possibilite d'entrevoir quelques aspects de la piete du laic medieval par l'etude iconographique, liturgique et stylistique de ces douze Livres d'Heures realisees en France, dans les Flandres, dans le Rhin superieur ou en Italie, entre la fin du XIVe et le debut du XVe siecle. L'histoire intellectuelle du Moyen Age tardif a ete l'object privilegie des recherches menees par Gilbert Ouyet l'equipe qui s'est formee autour de lui. Ce recueil qui constitue une reflexion de synthese sur l'activite culturelle en France a cette periode represente une mise au point sur l'etat de la recherche ainsi qu'un instrument de travail indispensable a sa poursuite.
