On First Looking into Arden's Goethe: Adaptations and Translations of Classical German Plays for the Modern English Stage
Translations and adaptations have been generally neglected by literary criticism, and scholarly work on this topic is rare. Professor Mengel's pioneering critical study of ten translations of classical German plays by contemporary and distinguished English dramatists - including Bond, Mortimer and Stoppard - answers a real need in literary research and constitutes a breakthrough in scholarship and criticism. In his introduction, Mengel makes use of new tendencies in translation theory and outlines his descriptive approach, which avoids the pitfalls of traditional translation criticism and allows him to do justice to adaptations and translations as 'derived' genres. He also pays meticulous attention to the texts themselves, and by close comparison of the source text and target text he pinpoints crucial linguistic, literary and cultural differences; these, he argues, should be taken as the starting point for translation analysis, enabling greater understanding of different cultures and communication between them, which paradoxically the notion of 'faithful translation' can discourage. <p>10 pages uncut. Text in German. Inscribed by Megnes on inside page "With kindest regards Karl Menges 20 March 1975." From New York Times obituary 25 Sept. 1999: "Karl H. Menges an authority on the strategically important languages of Central Asian peoples in the former Soviet Union died on Monday in Vienna. He was 91. Dr. Menges who picked up new languages almost as casually as most people buy groceries had been active conducting research at the University of Vienna until a few months before his death his son Constantine said. Dr. Menges taught for 36 years at Columbia University. . Living in Germany in the early 1930's Dr. Menges who called himself a Catholic centrist joined the anti-Nazi resistance distributing literature organizing meetings and speaking out in public forums. In 1936 he was arrested by the Gestapo interrogated for five hours charged with treason and temporarily released pending a trial. As he was leaving Gestapo headquarters a friendly former fellow student who had joined the Gestapo told Dr. Menges secretly ''If I were you I wouldn't come back.'' Dr. Menges promptly made his escape over the Czech border. After part of Czechoslovakia was annexed by the Nazis he fled to Turkey where he continued to teach and pick up additional languages. He published 15 books and hundreds of articles. He retired from Columbia in 1976 and started a second teaching career at the University of Vienna."</p> Centre International de Dialectologie Generale
