In an attempt to find out why they acted thus Dr Brain has translated the three works on bloodletting by the second-century physician Galen which provide by far the most comprehensive account of the practice in antiquity. This is the first published version of these works in a modern language. After a brief summary of Galen's medical system the author goes on to consider the origins of Galen's ideas and methods with particular reference to the Hippocratic writings and the question why Galen in common with most of the ancient physicians believed in the efficacy of the comedy. The effects of bloodletting are considered in terms of modem physiology and medicine and the possibility is explored that it may indeed have been beneficial in the conditions prevailing in Galen's time. . 0521320852 . A wonderful work of history, folklore, nostalgia, and sociology by the Newcastle antiquary, John Brand (1744-1806). The first volume deals with holidays and customs associated with them, such as: New Years Eve; Valentine's Day; customs surrounding many long lost feast days; Easter; pagan mid-Summer rites and dances; Allhallow Even; Yule and Christmastide; Harvests; Etc. The second volume deals with customs and ceremonies relating to life events and common folklore, such as: marriage; death; communion; sailors going tp sea; fairs; fairies; devils and witchcraft; omens; charms; divination; Etc. There are also over 30 pages describing games and sports, including: Archery; Boxing; Foot-Ball; Goff or Golf; Nine Pins; Races; the Ring; Wrestling; etc. & etc. First issued as a small octavo in 1777, Brand continued collecting materials for a revised edition for the rest of his life. He acquired a large amount of additional information from the statistical enquiries in Scotland instigated by Sir John Sinclair. A second edition was planned in 1795, but Brand was apparently overwhelmed by the task of arranging systematically so much material. He did not live to complete the project. Instead the collections were purchased after his death by a bookseller for L600 and were incorporated into this new edition by Sir Henry Ellis (1777-1869). This a monthly issue of an obscure and rare Geographical publication issued in Weimar/ Germany in the late 1700's and early 1800's named 'Geographische Ephemeriden.' It contains a large 50 page report about New Georgia which today is part of the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. In this report the author explores the history, fauna, flora and people of the islands and draws on accounts by John Hunter, Bougainville, Carteret, Labillardiere and others who visited them. The report is accompanied by a portrait of Captain John Hunter as well a fold-out map measuring 250 mm x 190 mm. A very early report and map on the Solomon Islands and very rare.
