Minor shelfwear to DJ. ; Here James O'Hara shows how the deceptive nature of prophecy in the Aeneid complicates assessment of the poem's attitude toward its hero's achievement and toward the future of Rome under Augustus Caesar. This close study of the language and rhetorical context of the prophecies reveals that they regularly suppress discouraging material: the gods send promising messages to Aeneas and others to spur them on in their struggles but these struggles often lead to untimely deaths or other disasters only darkly hinted at by the prophecies. O'Hara finds in these prophecies a persistent subtext that both stresses the human cost of Aeneas' mission and casts doubt on Jupiter's promise to Venus of an "endless empire" for the Romans. O'Hara considers the major prophecies that look confidently toward Augustus' Rome from the standpoint of Vergil's readers who like the characters within the poem must struggle with the possibility that the optimism of the prophecies of Rome is undercut by darker material partially suppressed. The study shows that Vergil links the deception of his characters to the deceptiveness of Roman oratory politics and religion and to the artifice of poetry itself. In response to recent debates about whether the Aeneid is optimistic or pessimistic O'Hara argues that Vergil expresses both the Romans' hope for the peace of a Golden Age under Augustus and their fear that this hope might be illusory. ; 224 pages . Despite centuries of intertribal contact the American Indian peoples of northwestern California have continued to speak a variety of distinct languages. At the same time they have come to embrace a common way of life based on salmon fishing and shared religious practices. In this thought-provoking re-examination of the hypothesis of linguistic relativity Sean O'Neill looks closely at the Hupa Yurok and Karuk peoples to explore the striking juxtaposition between linguistic diversity and relative cultural uniformity among their communities. O'Neill examines intertribal contact multilingualism storytelling and historical change among the three tribes focusing on the traditional culture of the region as it existed during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He asks important historical questions at the heart of the linguistic relativity hypothesis: Have the languages in fact grown more similar as a result of contact multilingualism and cultural convergence Or have they instead maintained some of their striking grammatical and semantic differences Through comparison of the three languages O'Neill shows that long-term contact among the tribes intensified their linguistic differences creating unique Hupa Yurok and Karuk identities. If language encapsulates worldview as the principle of linguistic relativity suggests then this region's linguistic diversity is puzzling. Analyzing patterns of linguistic accommodation as seen in the semantics of space and time grammatical classification and specialized cultural vocabularies O'Neill resolves the apparent paradox by assessing long-term effects of contact. ‎More than obstacles, medieval frontiers - whether geographical, political, military, intellectual or artistic - seem to have been bridges and points of contact. This volume brings together forty-four contributions by specialists of history, history of ideas, medieval philosophy, philology, linguistics, literature as well as manuscript and archival studies. The first uses of the term frontiere in thirteenth-fourteenth-century French were military, referring to the first line of troops in a battle. In architecture it meant the front of a building, and at the end of the fourteenth century it was first used as a geographical term, in Spain specifically about the divide between the Christians and the Muslims. More than obstacles, medieval frontiers - whether geographical, political, military, intellectual or artistic - seem to have been bridges and points of contact. Frontiers was the theme of the Third European Congress of Medieval Studies organised by the FIDEM in Jyvaskyla, Finland, in 2003. True to the nature of the FIDEM, it was highly interdisciplinary, bringing together scholars from all over the world, addressing problems ranging from Byzantine administration to Icelandic vernacular scribal culture, during a week of extraordinary intellectual excitement.
