Most of the discussion in Porphyry concern the meanings of words and phrases but some turn to appreciations of the poet's art such as simile and metaphor discussions which at times anticipate modern criticism. En guise de festivit�s la vie publique s'est polaris�e autour d'un r�f�rendum qui aurait d� par une r�forme constitutionnelle majeure r�nover un syst�me scl�ros� qui bloque la volont� de reconnaissance du Qu�bec des Indiens ou de certains habitants de l'Ouest. L'�chec de cette tentative a replong� le pays dans ses incertitudes l'�lection f�d�rale d'octobre 1993 n'ayant pas contribu� � �claircir la situation. Comment un mod�le d'existence paisible et de promesses de d�veloppement s'est-il mis lui-m�me en panne se r�v�lant incapable de r�gler ses probl�mes C'est que le Canada est riche en paradoxes. Voici un pays officiellement ind�pendant depuis 1931 qui conserve pour chef d'Etat le souverain britannique dont le portrait orne les billets de banque et les pi�ces de monnaie. Un pays qui n'a un drapeau national que depuis 1964. Un pays dont le quart des habitants attach�s � leur culture et � leur identit� les Qu�b�cois vivent selon les principes d'un Code civil inspir� et celui de la France alors que les autres se satisfont de la Common Law d'origine anglaise. Un pays officiellement bilingue mais qui se veut �galement multiculturel. Ce sont quelques-unes de ces contradictions que cet ouvrage cherche � �clairer en s'attachant � l'�volution politique sociale culturelle et �conomique du Canada au cours du XXe si�cle. Depuis une dizaine d'ann�es un nouvel �quilibre est bien recherch� alors que l'accord de libre-�change nord-am�ricain p�se sur le maintien d'une identit� canadienne.
