It encourages a synoptic synchronic view of such poetry from archaic iambus through Roman satire and argues that if we can appreciate the abstract poetics of mockery that governs individual poets in such genres we can we better understand how such poetry functioned in its own historical moment. Rosen examines in particular the various strategies deployed by ancient satirical poets to enlist the sympathies of a putative audience convince them of the justice of their indignation and the legitimacy of their personal attacks. The mocking satirist at the height of his power remains elusive and paradoxical--a figure of self-constructed abjection yet arrogant and sarcastic at the same time; a figure whose speech can be self-righteous one moment but scandalous the next; who will insist on the "reality" of his poetry but make it clear that this reality is always mediated by an inescapable movement towards fictionality. While scholars have often in principle acknowledged the force of irony persona-construction and other such devices by which satirists destabilize their claims very often in practice--especially when considering individual satirists in isolation from others--they too succumb to the satirist's invitation to take what he says at face value. Despite the sophisticated critical tools they may bring to bear on satirical texts therefore classicists still tend to treat such poets ultimately as monochromatically indignant vindictive individuals on a genuine self-righteous mission. Bound in the original gilt decorated black cloth. Alfred Rosenberg 1893-1946 was editor of the Nazi party organ V�LKISCHER BEOBACHTER. It was his anti-Semitic anti-Christian and neo-pagan book DER MYTHUS DES 20. JAHRHUNDERTS The Myth of the Twentieth Century that supplied Adolf Hitler and the Nazis with a philosophical and pseudo-scientific basis for their racist doctrine. In 1933 Rosenberg was appointed foreign affairs secretary of the party. He became minister for the occupied Eastern territories in 1941. Following conviction at the Nuremberg war crimes trials Rosenberg was executed in 1946. With the possible exception of Hitler's MEIN KAMPF Rosenberg's DER MYTHUS DES 20. JAHRHUNDERTS was the book that most influenced the German people in their acceptance of Nazi ideology and doctrine. This copy is from the library of Radio Munich with two small ink stamps: "Eigentum des Radio M�nchen." The association with Radio Munich is important for two reasons: 1 Propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels and the Nazis relied heavily on radio to disseminate their ideology and to build support among the German people. 2 Nazi party headquarters was in Munich and Radio Munich was at the epicenter of the Nazi propaganda machine during the Third Reich's early years. Famous study of Russian Orientalist, Sinologist and scholar of Japanese Studies Otto Julius Rosenberg (1888 - 1919) on a system of classification of Chinese characters. Rosenberg studied from 1906 to 1911 at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the University of St. Petersburg, lectured by, among others, the founder of the Russian school of Indology, Sergei Oldenburg (1863 - 1934). During a study stay in Bonn in 1909, Rosenberg befriended Hermann Jacobi (1850-1937), the greatest Indologist and Sanskrit scholar of that time. As part of an internship at the Department of Oriental Languages (SOS) at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität two years later, he also befriended the German linguist and scholar of Japanese studies, Rudolf Lange (1850 - 1933). From 1912 to 1916 he studied Buddhist Literature and Tradition at the University of Tokyo. Here Rosenberg became acquainted with the then leading Buddhist Scholars of Japan. In the course of this stay, he explored the school of Zen Buddhism as one of the first Western scientists and also became an expert for Japanese and Chinese characters used in the writing of Chinese and Japanese. In 1924, his work "The problems of Buddhist philosophy" was published in German. Based on ideas of Russian Sinologist and Buddhologist Vasily Vasilyev (1818 - 1900), Rosenberg developed a method of classification of Chinese and Japanese characters. He published the results of his research in a dictionary which was published in English and Japanese and which formed the basis of the so-called "Four Corner Method", which is still employed today in the creation of Chinese and Japanese dictionaries. This volume is extremely rare and, according to the world's largest bibliographic database, WorldCat, it is only found in six libraries worldwide. The copy offered here was purchased from a Japanese private collection.‎
