Early fraying present at hinge with spine, top and bottom. Chip 2 mm across at top edge near spine. Flecks of white paint toward bottom corners. On rear cover outside corners are worn, more heavily at top. Leather binding is wrinkled near spine near bottom. Early fraying present at hinge with spine top and bottom. Spine shows some wear at top towards front, and heavier wear at base, with patchy wear / scrapes in centre above base. Horizontal leather ridges in leather show moderate wear toward centre of spine. FEP is detached and creased, and is missing bottom right corner, missing area extends 3 cm up and in from corner. Bottom outer corner of book shows evidence of water damage, which extends intermittently to page 456. Area of water damage extends between 1 and 3 cm up from corner, and between 2 cm and half page width in from corner. Text not affected. Inside front cover has label from Taylor Institution, has various smudges and tears, and bottom outer corner shows tear, missing area of coloured paper extends 2.5 cm up from corner and 3 cm across. Page after FEP has pencil writing top right. Patchy browning present on edge page block, doesn't extend onto page except on page 29. Inside rear cover and BEP have missing bottom outer corner, area missing extends 5 mm up from corner and 2 cm across. Text is clean, bright and tight throughout.‎

His political stance was sharply criticized for inconsistency by Theodor Mommsen and others his philosophical works for lack of originality. Since then scholars have come to a better understanding of the political conditions that informed the views of Mommsen and his contemporaries about Caesar and Cicero and as a result Cicero's writings have been restored to a more appropriate position in the literature and history of the Roman Republic. ‎Ce poeme germanique de pres de 6000 vers a ete compose entre 822 et 840, vraisemblablement vers 825, dans les premieres annees du regne de Louis le Pieux, par un erudit chretien, sans doute compagnon du Frison Liudger. Ce dernier etait le continuateur de l'oeuvre, en pays frison et saxon, des evangelisateurs anglo-saxons du VIIIeme siecle, dont Willehad, lequel avait succede a Boniface, tue en 754 a Dokkum alors qu'il poursuivait l'evangelisation entreprise par Willibrord. La langue utilisee, qualifiee de Vieux-Saxon par les specialistes, etait donc tout a fait familiere a son auteur. Celui-ci, soucieux d'assurer le succes de l'Evangile dans les coeurs a la suite de la dure conquete par Charlemagne de la Frise Occidentale et du pays saxon, usa d'une langue connue des peuples riverains de la Mer du Nord au debut du IXeme siecle. Surtout, il apporta au texte de l'Evangile, base sur des manuscrits et travaux provenant de Fulda, abbaye fondee par Boniface, des adaptations d'ordre sociologique propres a susciter l'adhesion des peuples rudes et fiers de ces contrees nordiques. En ce sens, le Heliand n'est pas seulement une reprise de l'Evangile : il est aussi le document particulier par lequel les evangelisateurs des pays riverains de la Mer du Nord font entrer le lecteur dans la societe des nouveaux convertis d'entre Weser, Ems et Lauwers, fraichement vaincus et soumis par les Francs. La presente traduction, en prose, est accompagnee du texte germanique tel qu'edite a Halle en 1878 par Eduard Sievers, et de commentaires et annotations. Elle est precedee d'une introduction historique et d'un lexique de termes empruntes au Heliand et compares a quatre langues germaniques proches, avec traduction en francais. Languages : French.‎

‎This collection of essays by international scholars focuses on the vernacular urban culture of the Chambers of Rhetoric in the Low Countries of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Reflecting social, religious, and economic realities at a time of fundamental change, the Rhetoricians' plays also reveal a range of poetic and theatrical conventions that make them an important source of information both on practical stagecraft and on the role of theatre in the urban community, as seen in their involvement in civic processions or the organization of drama competitions. The volume sets the Rhetoricians' drama in the cultural life of the provinces of the Low Countries during a period dominated by ruling foreign dynasties: the Burgundian dukes and then the Habsburg dynasty, most prominently the Emperor Charles V and his son King Philip II of Spain. It was a time of intense religious controversy which gave rise to debates both on and off stage. These debates, far from damaging Rhetorician culture, actually stimulated its activities and development to such an extent that Rhetoricians became representative voices for their time. The admixture of entertainment and education offered by the Chambers to their own members - and to a wider public - was one which, though originating in a medieval context, soon became linked with humanist and Renaissance thinking.
