‎HANS UN YARICK / MAX AND MORITZ. A Story in Seven Tricks. Pennsylvania Dutch & English Bilingual Edition. Edited by Walter Sauer.‎

‎58 p. Charmingly illustrated. Text in English and Pennsylvania-Dutch. 8vo. Color printed stiff wraps. First Edition. AS NEW. Wilhelm Busch (1832-1908) was a beloved German author, poet, painter, and cartoonist. His greatest ambition was to emulate the Dutch and Flemish masters - Rubens, Hals, Etc. Instead, he "stumbled into immortality", as the first German Federal President, Theodor Heuss, once put it, through a few caricatures he was asked to do for the satirical magazine "Fliegende Blaetter" that was founded in Munich in 1848. He soon started to add his own humorous verses, and his cartoons became longer and more elaborate. ** He can be regarded as the Father of the Modern Comic Strip, and wherever an Englishman would quote Lewis Carroll's "Alice", a German is likely to quote Busch. Although famous in his later years, he lived quite withdrawn and despised the fuss he thought was made about him. This is his classic work, rendered into the Pennsylvania-Dutch dialect by the great German-American poet John Birmelin (1873-1950). An entertaining way to learn the dialect spoken by Amish, Mennonites, and others to this day. We are the U.S. distributors of the English and Pennsylvania Dutch edition. ‎Tooke, John Horne.‎

‎EPEA PTEROENTA [in Greek], or THE DIVERSIONS OF PURLEY. A New Edition revised and corrected by Richard Taylor. with numerous additions from the copyprepared by the author for republication to which is annexed his Letter toJohn Dunning, Esq.‎

‎Two volumes. pp. xxxiv, (6), 498 + Frontis engraving, dated 1798, of Mercury, seated; (6), 590, (2). Offsetting from frontis, as usual. Foxed. 8vo. 235 mm. The original paper boards binding has perished and should be sometimereplaced. John Horne (1736-1812), later known as John Horne Tooke began his celebrity when he became an enthusiastic partisan of Wilkes in 1768. They made a good pair. Horne loved battles of wits and legal maneuvering, and he sympathized with every cause for liberty, including the French Revolution, and the independence of the American Colonies. Wilkes and Horne later came to bitter disagreement and fought a war of 'Letters'. The redoubtable Junius entered the controversy on Wilkes's side. Horne retorted vigorously, and proved the most successful critic of that famous agitator. A friend of Horne's, William Tooke, lived in the charming town of Purley, and it was he who persuaded John Horne, by then a famous political agitator, to add the name of Tooke to his (as a mutual honor after Horne had successfully fought an Enclosure Act which would have adversely affected Tooke's Purley property). After John Horne Tooke wrote 'The Diversions of Purley' it was apparent that he wanted to be heir to at least half of his Tooke's fortune; but thiswas not to be. This edition of discursive and eccentric linguistic essays, edited and printed by Richard Taylor (1781-1858), is considered the best version of 'The Diversions of Purley'. W151 R‎

‎SMALL TALK. For the use of Young Ladies, who Intend to Learn the Colloquial Part of the Italian Language.‎

‎pp. xv, 424. Double column in parallel Italian and English. Old damp stain. 8vo. 215 mm. Original full leather binding; boards detached; spine worn. Almost disbound. Manuscript presentation on the front fly-leaf "For Charles Greville Esq. / From the Author." The recipient is probably the father of the famous political diarist, Charles Cavendish Fulke Greville (1794-1865). Also with the small printed bookplate of DeWitt Miller, Cross River, Westchester County, NY. DeWitt Miller (born in 1857) was a very famous book collector and public lecturer. This edition is almost identical to Baretti's 'Easy Phraseology for the use of Young Ladies'. The main difference is that it was issued without the Preface written by Baretti's intimate friend, Samuel Johnson. Baretti (1719-1789) was a remarkable character, whose tale cannot be told in this space - except to say that he was a warmly embraced member of Johnson's circle. During his sojourn in America, he became acquainted with Dr. Joseph Priestley, Thomas Jefferson, and other eminent men. In Philadelphia he published an essay on The Philosophy of Language, in which he first explained to the world how he was led to make those discoveries "from which my system of universal and economical instruction derives such peculiar and manifold advantages".
