‎Octavo in red wrappers; 171 pages ; 24 cm.; light edgewear to wrappers; two-inch light crease to cover; o/w wrappers are clean; pages are clean, crisp, bright and free of marks and creases; binding is tight and square; a gently used copy. In English. || Abstract: "Standard Arabic - the language of educated discourse throughout the Arab world - presents difficulties beyond those encountered in most foreign languages. Though today it is increasingly being popularised, it remains essentially an elitist, 'learned' language. It has been used without substantial change for over thirteen centuries, in regions as distant as Spain and China, in fields as diverse as poetry and medicine, mathematics and theology. Its morphology and syntax are largely constant, but vocabulary, sense, idiom and style often vary widely. Arabic script requires a good deal of intelligent guesswork: long vowels and diphthongs are easily confused with certain consonants or with each other; short vowels are not normally indicated at all; most consonants are distinguished only by the placing of dots, and can easily be mistaken or misprinted. This is a textbook designed to guide the first-year student through the difficult early stages of learning Arabic. It avoids the dry, 'scholarly' approach; it uses modern linguistic concepts sparingly, and takes simple short-cuts where they serve an immediate, practical purpose. Professor Wickens presents the basic facts of the language in a pragmatic order; he introduces the beginner to the recurring problems, shows various ways of recognising and tackling them, and helps accustom him from the outset to deal with the unvocalised (unvowelled) texts which he will nearly always encounter."‎

‎Hao qiu zhuan = The fortunate union‎

‎Small octavo in dark green printed think limp cloth; string-style binding; (6), 371 pages ; 20 cm Scarce. Text in Chinese, with title page chielfy in English. Numerous footnotes, mainly in English. "Haoqiu zhuan (traditional Chinese: ; simplified Chinese: ; pinyin: H oqi˙ zhu‡n; WadeñGiles: Hao-ch'iu chuan "The pleasing history" or "The fortunate union") is a Chinese "caizi jiaren" (talent and beauty) novel published in the 17th Century. The author is known only under the name "Man of the Teaching of Names" (C: , P: MÌngji o Zh ngrÈn, W: Ming-chiao Chung-jen). The identity of the author and exact date of publishing are not known.[2] According to Philippe Postel, author of "Les traductions franÁaises du Haoqiu zhuan," the most commonly stated date of authorship is 1683, at the beginning of the Qing Dynasty. After 1712 the story was given the subtitle Xiayi fengyue zhuan (T: , S: , P: Xi·yÏ f ngyuË zhu‡n, W: Hsia-i Feng-y¸eh chuan, "A Tale of Chivalry and Love"). ChloÎ F. Starr, author of Red-Light Novels of the Late Qing, wrote that this novel was among the best-known caizi jiaren novels. Maram Epstein, author of Competing Discourses: Orthodoxy, Authenticity, and Engendered Meanings in Late Imperial Chinese Fiction, described the novel as being "moralistic". The story has eighteen chapters. The beauty, Shui Bingxin, and the scholar, Tie Zhongyu, want to avenge their fathers and go against the bureaucracy, which is corrupt. Shui Bingxin's uncle wants her to marry a son of an official with a lot of power, but Shui Bingxin does not want to marry that man, who is dissolute. Tie Zhongyu rescues Shui Bingxin and the two begin to live in the same house. The uncle spreads rumors that suggest Shui Bingxin is not a virgin. Tie Zhongyu focuses on his studies after Shui Bingxin persuades him to. The two lovers marry after Tie Zhongyu receives the top ranking of the metropolitan examination. Due to the rumors, Shui Bingxin does not want to have sexual intercourse with Tie Zhongyu. At the end, the Empress oversees a physical examination of Shui Bingxin. In this way, the Empress verifies the virginity of Shui Bingxin.[9] The Emperor of China gives rewards to those loyal to him and punishes those guilty of crimes. After the verification, the two lovers engage in sexual intercourse."óWikipedia‎

‎Wordsworth, Charles‎

‎Graecae Grammaticae Rudimenta : In Usum Scholarum‎

‎Yellow octavo; 252 p. Cambridge library collection. Classics; "Charles Wordsworth's Graecae Grammaticae Rudimenta in Usum Scholarum was, for decades, the foundational Greek grammar in England. Wordsworth, a nephew of the poet, a master at Winchester College and later bishop of St Andrews, Dunkeld, and Dublane, used his expertise in teaching the classical languages to produce a clear, practical introduction to Greek, beginning with the alphabet and progressing through the declension of nouns and adjectives, the conjugations of verbs, and the fundamentals of syntax. In striving not to replace the standard Eton Grammar but rather to refine and revise it, Wordsworth succeeded in composing a book that one fellow master called 'most distinct, easy of conception for the boys, and lucidly arranged'."‎

‎Aspects of Old English Poetic Syntax : Where Clauses Begin‎

‎Small quarto in maroon cloth, gilt titles; xii, 248 pages : illustrations ; 24 cm ; bibliographical references (pages 223-238) and index. Series: Illinois medieval Studies / Contents: 1. Clause-Initial Verbs and the Continuity of Reference -- 6. Uncontracted Negation as a Cue to Sentence Structure in Old English Verse -- 7. Perfecting the Old English Past. // "In Aspects of Old English Poetic Syntax, Mary Blockley uses modern linguistics to tackle the thorny problem of how to interpret a written language that relied neither on punctuation nor on capitalization to mark clause boundaries and subordination." "Distinguished by a remarkable combination of erudition and lucidity, Aspects of Old English Poetic Syntax provides new insight into the rules that govern syntactic relationships and indicates how these rules differ for prose and verse. Blockley considers the functions of four of the most common and most syntactically important words in Old English, as well as such features of clauses as verb-initial order, negative contraction, and unexpressed but understood subjects. Picking up where Bruce Mitchell's classic Old English Syntax left off, Blockley shows how such common words and structures mark the relationships between phrases and clauses." "Blockley also considers how the poetic tradition compensated for the loss in written texts of the syntactic functions served by intonation and inflection. Arguing that verse relied instead on a prescriptively regulated, unambiguous syntax, she suggests principles that promise more complex and subtle interpretations of familiar texts such as Beowelf as well as a wealth of other Old English writings."--Jacket. // English language -- Old English, ca. 450-1100 -- Syntax. ‎Words on Fire: The Unfinished Story of Yiddish‎

‎Quarto in creme color illus jacket; xvi, 430 pages : illustrations, maps ; 24 cm ; bibliographical references and index. "From its ancient roots in Hebrew and Aramaic, to its development as the common language of Jews in medieval Europe, and its blossoming as a language of literature, scholarship and a lively press in the nineteenth century, the story of Yiddish mirrors the history of the Jewish people in Europe and beyond. In Words on Fire, leading Yiddish scholar Dovid Katz recounts the sweeping history of this evocative and multifaceted language. Drawing on thirty years of research, Words on Fire traces the steps of a language once derided as "jargon" and identified with women and uneducated men from medieval times onward, and relates how efforts to raise its prestige were often met by opposition from the powers that be. Katz highlights the rise of literary Yiddish in the Renaissance-widely-read translations of knightly epic poems and guides for daily living-particularly by and for Jewish women. In the wake of secularizing and modernizing movements of the nineteenth century, Yiddish rose spectacularly in a few short years from a mass folk idiom to the language of sophisticated modern literature, theater, journalism, and scholarship." óPublisher. / Contents: Genesis -- The three languages of Ashkenaz -- Old Yiddish literature -- What should a lady read -- Yiddish and Kabbalah -- In the East -- Westernization and language -- New visions of Judaism -- The twentieth century -- In the twenty-first century -- The future of Yiddish. // Yiddish (Langue) -- Histoire. ‎Verb Doubling and Dummy Verb: Gap Avoidance Strategies in Verbal Fronting‎

‎Quarto in orange paper-backed boards; xii, 509 pages : illustrations ; 24 cm. Series: Linguistische Arbeiten, Vol. 574. "This monograph provides the first cross-linguistic study of repair strategies in verbal fronting, verb doubling and do-support, addressing both typological properties and theoretical aspects. First, it brings together data hitherto scattered across the empirical and theoretical literature and adds newly collected data from two African languages. For each of the 47 languages, the properties of verbal fronting are documented in detail. Based on this sample, the empirical part establishes two novel typological generalizations regarding the interaction between the size of the fronted category and the type of repair strategy used. The first of these identifies a systematic typological gap: No language that allows both verb and verb phrase fronting has do-support with the former and verb doubling with the latter. In the theoretical part, it is shown that previous theories of verb doubling/do-support are unable to account for both generalizations. A new approach within the Copy Theory of the Minimalist Framework is developed, that rests on the interaction of head movement, copy deletion, and the properties of different movement types. The book thus provides the first comprehensive empirical and theoretical overview of repair patterns in verbal fronting." ó Publisher.‎
