Thorne, Tony
Jolly Wicked, Actually: The 100 Words That Make Us English
"A wonderfully entertaining compendium of the hundred words and phrases that have over the last century become the cornerstones of modern spoken English, and have been used - sometimes deliberately, but often inadvertently - to stake out the common identity that unites the English, to define what makes us who we are, and thus different from those beastly foreigners who lurk just off our shores. Despite attempts by politicians and writers, despite lessons in citizenship enshrined in the national curriculum, we have famously never been able to define for posterity precisely what Englishness is.[It] takes certain well-loved and crucial expressions such as sorry, nice, common, posh, cuppa, and chippy, explores their strange and wonderful origins, and demonstrates with wit and charm how they are emblems of an era or an attitude, of a heritage and of the traits and quirks essential to all our notions of Englishness. 345p. Bingo Boys And Poodle Fakers - A Curious Compendium Of Historical Slang Collected From The Best Authorities
Attaboys, Gorgers, Night-Hawks and Widos, the street argot of the past is every bit as colourful and irreverent as todays hip hop and bling. Slang has always aroused strong opinions, but whether you agree with Alan Bennett that there is something suspect about those in the vanguard of slang or with John Galsworthy that it is vigorous and apt, this fascinating new compendium unveils a wealth of information about the fads and peccadilloes of bygone days. What does it say, for instance, about the English that they once had over 100 terms for gin, including Stark Naked, Stinkious, and Wind? Always inventive, frequently hilarious and occasionally utterly outrageous slang is an exuberant celebration of the comic possibilities of everyday life. From Monday Mice to Marriage Music, Wiffle-Woffles to Bummaree, dip into the pages of Bingo Boys and Poodle-Fakers and discover the rough and rumbustious delights of Shakespeare's man of fire-new words, fashions own knight: the ever-changing underworld of the English language.117p. illus. decorated endpapers Book

Useful Basic Programs the for IBM PC (SYBEX micro guide)
VINTAGE The IBM Personal Computer Basic, commonly shortened to IBM BASIC, is a programming language first released by IBM with the IBM Personal Computer (model 5150) in 1981. IBM released four different versions of the Microsoft BASIC interpreter, licensed from Microsoft for the PC and PCjr. They are known as Cassette BASIC, Disk BASIC, Advanced BASIC (BASICA), and Cartridge BASIC. Versions of Disk BASIC and Advanced BASIC were included with IBM PC DOS up to PC DOS 4. In addition to the features of an ANSI standard BASIC, the IBM versions offered support for the graphics and sound hardware of the IBM PC line. Source code could be typed in with a full screen editor, and very limited facilities were provided for rudimentary program debugging. IBM also released a version of the Microsoft BASIC compiler for the PC, concurrently with the release of PC DOS 1.10 in 1982. This vintage handbook states : the programs in this book run with cassette BASIC or disk BASIC - you will need a disk for the programs in Chapter 6. 174p. Fine copy - almost "as new" Book

Feeney, Denis
Beyond Greek: The Beginnings of Latin Literature
"We take the existence of a literature in the Latin language for granted, but the emergence of this literature is a very strange moment in history. Latin literature should probably not have come into being in the form it took. This book explores the opening phase of Latin literature, from 240 to 140 BCE. The period begins with the first stage productions of Greek plays translated into Latin, which were also the first translations of Greek literary texts into any other language; it closes with the Romans in possession of a large-scale literature in Latin based on the literature of the Greeks, together with a developed historical tradition about their past and a mythology that connected them to the inheritance of the Greeks. Feeney shows how it allowed Romans to systematically take over Greek forms of tragedy, comedy, and epic, making them their own and giving birth to what has become known as Latin literature. 368p. bibliography Book
