Krostenko, Brian A
CICERO CATULLUS AND THE LANGUAGE OF SOCIAL PERFORMANCE
University Of Chicago Press. 2001. Softcover. Near Fine. Very light shelfwear.; Charm wit and style were critical but dangerous ingredients in the social repertoire of the Roman elite. Their use drew special attention but also exposed one to potential ridicule or rejection for valuing style over substance. Brian A. Krostenko explores the complexities and ambiguities of charm wit and style in Roman literature of the late Republic by tracking the origins development and use of the terms that described them which he calls "the language of social performance." As Krostenko demonstrates a key feature of this language is its capacity to express both approval and disdain—an artifact of its origins at a time when the "style" and "charm" of imported Greek cultural practices were greeted with both enthusiasm and hostility. Cicero played on that ambiguity for example by chastising lepidus "fine" boys in the "Second Oration against Catiline" as degenerates then arguing in his De Oratore that the successful speaker must have a certain charming lepos "wit". Catullus in turn exploited and inverted the political subtexts of this language for innovative poetic and erotic idioms.; 336 pages . 0226454444 . University Of Chicago Press paperback

Snowden, Jr , Frank M
BLACKS IN ANTIQUITY; Ethiopians in the Greco-Roman Experience
Belknap Press of Harvard University Press. 1970. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good in Good dust jacket. Minor pencilling to a few pages. Light shelfwear to book. DJ has chipping and a few tears. DJ spine is sunned.; Xxii 364pp illustrated. The Africans who came to ancient Greece and Italy participated in an important chapter of classical history. Although evidence indicated that the alien dark- and black-skinned people were of varied tribal and geographic origins the Greeks and Romans classified many of them as Ethiopians. In an effort to determine the role of black people in ancient civilization Mr. Snowden examines a broad span of Greco-Roman experience--from the Homeric era to the age of Justinian--focusing his attention on the Ethiopians as they were known to the Greeks and Romans. The author dispels unwarranted generalizations about the Ethiopians contending that classical references to them were neither glorifications of a mysterious people nor caricatures of rare creatures. Mr. Snowden has probed literary epigraphical papyrological numismatic and archaeological sources and has considered modern anthropological and sociological findings on pertinent racial and intercultural problems. He has drawn directly upon the widely scattered literary evidence of classical and early Christian writers and has synthesized extensive and diverse material. Along with invaluable reference notes Mr. Snowden has included over 140 illustrations which depict the Negro as the Greeks and Romans conceived of him in mythology and religion and observed him in a number of occupations--as servant diplomat warrior athlete and performer among others. Presenting an exceptionally comprehensive historical description of the first major encounter of Europeans with dark and black Africans Mr. Snowden found that the black man in a predominantly white society was neither romanticized nor scorned--that the Ethiopian in classical antiquity was considered by pagan and Christian without prejudice.; 364 pages . 0674076257 . Henry, Madeleine Mary
PRISONER OF HISTORY; Aspasia of Miletus and Her Biographical Tradition
Oxford University Press. 1995. Hardcover. Near Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. DJ has light shelfwear. Stapled offprint of book review tipped in.; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 208 pages; According to legend Aspasia of Miletus was a courtesan the teacher of Socrates and the political adviser of her lover Pericles. Next to Sappho and Cleopatra she is the best known woman of the ancient Mediterranean. Yet continued uncritical reception of her depiction in Attic comedy and naive acceptance of Plutarch's account of her in his Life of Pericles prevent us from understanding who she was and what her contributions to Greek thought may have been. Madeleine Henry combines traditional philological and historical methods of analysis with feminist critical perspectives in order to trace the construction of Aspasia's biographical tradition from ancient times to the present. Through her analysis of both literary and political evidence Henry determines the ways in which Aspasia has become an icon of the sexually attractive and politically influential female how this construction has prevented her from taking her rightful place as a contributor to the philosophical enterprise and how continued belief in this icon has helped sexualize all women's intellectual achievements. This is the first work to study Aspasia's biographical tradition from ancient Greece to the present day. . 0195087127 . Oxford University Press hardcover

ROMAN OSTIA
Oxford University Press. 1977. Second Edition. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Pages a bit browned. Minor bumping to a couple of corners. DJ has minor edgewear and a bit of chipping.; Ostia an ancient town on the coast facing the Tyrrhenian Sea in Latium Italy was the harbour of ancient Rome and perhaps its first colonia. Located at the mouth of the River Tiber Ostia was said to have been founded by Ancus Marcius one of the kings of Rome in the 7th century BC. However the most ancient archaeological remains so far discovered are no earlier than the 4th century BC and the most ancient buildings currently visible are from the 3rd century BC notably the Castrum military camp and of a slightly later date the Capitolium temple of Jupiter Juno and Minerva. The opus quadratum walls of the original castrum at Ostia provide important evidence for the building techniques that were employed in Roman urbanism during the period of the Middle Republic. Although Ostia was probably founded for the sole purpose of military defence — since through the Tiber's mouths armies could eventually reach Rome by water — in time the port became a commercial harbour and a very important one too. Many of the goods that Rome received from its colonies and provinces passed through Ostia. In this role Ostia soon replaced Pozzuoli.; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 722 pages . 0198148100 . Neils, Jenifer
THE PARTHENON FRIEZE
Cambridge University Press. 2001. Hardcover. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Includes cd-rom; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 316 pages; While the sculpted Ionic frieze of the Parthenon with its galloping horsemen and classically portrayed gods is reproduced in every art history text and has been much studied by scholars no single book has yet been devoted to all its myriad aspects. This study by classical archaeologist and art historian Jenifer Neils breaks new ground by considering all aspects of this complex and controversial monument. Although the frieze has been studied for over two hundred years most scholarship has sought an overall interpretation of the iconography rather than focusing on the sculpture's visual language essential for a full understanding of the narrative. Neils' study not only decodes the language of the frieze but also analyzes its conception and design style and content as well as its impact on later art. Unusual for its wide-ranging approach to the frieze this book also brings ethical reasoning to bear on the issue of its possible repatriation as part of the on-going Elgin Marble debate. As one of the foremost examples of the high classical style and the finest expression of mid-fifth century Athenian ideology the Parthenon frieze is without doubt one of the major monuments of western civilization and as such deserves to be understood in all its dimensions. The accompanying CD-ROM contains a virtual reality Macromedia Director movie of the complete frieze based on the plaster casts in the Skulpturhalle in Basel Switzerland. Developed by Rachel Rosenzweig of the Department of Greek and Roman Art of the Cleveland Museum of Art the casts are arranged in conformity with Neils' reconstruction and enable the user to view them in succession as if walking around the Parthenon. The CD-ROM requires a computer running either MAC OS 8.01 or later or Windows 95 or later. . 0521641616 . Cambridge University Press hardcover
