GREEK AIMS IN FORTIFICATION
Oxford University Press. 1979. Hardcover. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Light tanning to pages. Faint crease to ffep. DJ has very minor shelfwear.; “This study explores a neglected aspect of history: the precautions upon which depended the existence of city-states great and small and even of a few rustic communities. Social as well as political stresses impelled the ancient Greeks to build innumerable fortifications of astonishing diversity; the book refers merely for points of special interest to hundreds of remains still visible in the homeland many along the Turkish and the Italian coasts and some in countries as remote as Spain and Afghanistan. ”; 552 pages . 0198148240 . GREEK INSECTS
Oxford University Press. 1986. Hardcover. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Old price sticker to front inner cover. Minor shelfwear to DJ.; 208 pages; This authoritative study of Greek insects treats not only the obvious questions of their identity--in modern terms of species and genera--but also such topics as the etymologies both formal and popular of the various insect names the folklore religious and other signficant associations and the differences in attitude shown toward them by the ancient and modern world. Patterned after two famous studies by D'Arcy Thompson--A Glossary of Greek Birds and A Glossary of Greek Fishes--this volume provides a meticulous survey of the topic examining the ancient literature and the enormous secondary literature connected with it as well as the most recent scientific findings. Like Thompson's glossaries this work focuses primarily on evidence from literature and art with later evidence brought in only when needed for a full understanding of the facts. Compiled by a classics scholar working with a zoologist this glossary provides alphabetically-arranged entries on such common insects as the ant the louse the butterfly the wasp the bedbug the cricket and the praying mantis. The first comprehensive study on this subject Greek Insects belongs on the bookshelf of every Greek scholar and it will be of considerable interest to educated readers. . 0195205480 . DJ has a couple of small open tears.; 1 x 9.75 x 6.75 Inches; 400 pages; Inadequately documented ancient Greek religion can all too easily be reduced to the dry analysis of archaeological remains and so-called `ritual objects'. This authoritative new work attempts to bridge the gap that usually divides Greek religion from Greek history setting it firmly in the thick of contemporary events and politics. How did people actually worship the gods Was Socrates's trial a crisis for religion or the state or both These are among the key issues addressed in what promises to be the definitive work on the subject for many years to come. . 0198149794 . INTERPRETATIONS OF GREEK MYTHOLOGY
Croom Helm. 1987. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Bmp to upper edge of rear board. Scholar's name to ffep Jenifer Neils. Else Minor shelfwear. DJ has minor shelfwear.; Interpretations of Greek Mythology first published in1987 builds on the innovative work of Walter Burkert and the ‘Paris school’ of Jean-Pierre Vernant and represents a renewal of interpretation of Greek mythology. The contributors to this volume present a variety of approaches to the Greek myths all of which eschew a monolithic or exclusively structuralist hermeneutic method. Specifically the notion that mythology can simply be read as a primitive mode of narrative history is rejected with emphasis instead being placed on the relationships between mythology and history ritual and political genealogy. The essays concentrate on some of the best known characters and themes – Oedipus Orpheus Narcissus – reflecting the complexity and fascination of the Greek imagination. The volume will long remain an indispensable tool for the study of Greek mythology and it is of great interest to anyone interested in the development of Greek culture and civilisation and the nature of myth.; 294 pages; The volume's fundamental concern is with how the Greeks conceptualized the experience of poetry and debated the values of that experience. The book's organizing theme is a recurrent Greek dialectic between ideas of poetry as on the one hand a powerfully enthralling experience in its own right a kind of 'ecstasy' and on the other a medium for the expression of truths which can exercise lasting influence on its audiences' views of the world. Citing a wide range of modern scholarship and making frequent connections with later periods of literary theory and aesthetics Halliwell questions many orthodoxies and received opinions about the texts analysed. The resulting perspective casts new light on ways in which the Greeks attempted to make sense of the psychology of poetic experience - including the roles of emotion ethics imagination and knowledge - in the life of their culture . 0709932707 . THE FALL OF TROY IN EARLY GREEK POETRY AND ART
Oxford University Press. 1997. Hardcover. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Dustjacket has very minor shelfwear. Review of book by Jenifer Neils- also her copy tipped in.; Oxford Classical Monographs; 0.85 x 8.75 x 5.62 Inches; 304 pages; Greek myth-makers crafted the downfall of Troy and its rulers into an archetypal illustration of ruthless conquest deceit crime and punishment and the variability of human fortunes. This book examines the major episodes in the archetypal myth - the murder of Priam the rape of Kassandra the reunion of Helen and Menelaos and the escape of Aineias - as witnessed in Archaic Greek epic fifth-century Athenian drama and Athenian black- and red-figure vase painting. It focuses in particular on the narrative artistry with which poets and painters balanced these episodes with one another and intertwined them with other chapters in the story of Troy. The author offers the first comprehensive demonstration of the narrative centrality of the Ilioupersis myth within the corpus of Trojan epic poetry and the first systematic study of pictorial juxtapositions of Ilioupersis scenes on painted vases. . 0198150644 . THE CULTURES WITHIN ANCIENT GREEK CULTURE; Contact Conflict Collaboration
Cambridge University Press. 2003. Hardcover. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. DJ has light edgewear and 1 tiny tear. Book is fine.; Challenging the conventional perception of ancient Greece as the paradigm for unified models of culture this study offers an alternative view of archaic and classical Greece. It is one in which the contact conflict and collaboration of a variety of "subcultures" combine to comprise what we now understand as "Greekness." The volume argues for the recognition and analysis of cultural contact within Greece focusing on the micromechanics of cultural exchange the permeability of cultural boundaries and the significance of Delphi's geographically marginal yet symbolically central location as an "internal contact zone."; 9.8 X 6.8 X 0.9 inches; 310 pages . 0521815665 . THE FIRST WESTERN GREEKS
Cambridge University Press. 1992. Softcover. Very Good. Scholars' bookplate to inner cover Slater & Dunbabin. Minor creasing lower corner of DJ.; The purpose of this book is to acquaint a wider audience with an archaeological project that could hardly be more revolutionary: the effective discovery and excavation from 1952 onwards of the first Greek establishment in the West Euboean Pithekoussai on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples. This vast trading settlement is not at all typical of the Western colonial scene. Pithekoussi is very large and very early and it marks the northern limit of Greek South Italy; furthermore the earliest immigrants may not all have been Greek. This book about Pithekoussai and its implications is based on Giorgio Buchner's excavations there which have revealed a variety of component sites so far without parallel in the contemporary Greek homeland. The cemetery the acropolis dump and suburban industrial quarter each shed light on a different aspect of everyday life at one of the great crossroads of antiquity.; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 200 pages . 0521421640 . ATHENIAN RELIGION; A History

Ffep is creased. DJ has minor shelfwear.; 1 x 9.75 x 6.75 Inches; 400 pages; Inadequately documented ancient Greek religion can all too easily be reduced to the dry analysis of archaeological remains and so-called `ritual objects'.
