‎Joseph d'Exeter L'Iliade. Epopee du XIIe siecle sur la Guerre de Troie,‎

‎L'Iliade, une epopee latine ecrite entre 1183 et 1190 par un clerc anglais du nom de Joseph d'Exeter, neveu de l'archeveque Baudouin de Cantorbery auquel il dedie son oeuvre, merite de retenir l'attention a plus d'un titre. Elle offre d'abord un temoignage tres eclairant sur la reception qui est faite de l'Antiquite par un clerc latinisant tres cultive, en cette deuxieme moitie du XIIe siecle qui a vu apparaitre les premieres "mises en roman", c'est-a-dire les premieres adaptations en francais d'oeuvres latines. Il n'est pas impossible que l'Iliade ait ete concue comme une reponse au Roman de Troie de Benoit de Sainte-Maure, redige vers 1165, qui s'efforcait de mettre l'histoire et la culture antiques a la portee d'un public chevaleresque. Les deux oeuvres partent en effet du meme texte, l'Histoire de la destruction de Troie de Dares le Phrygien (De excidio Troiae historia), un texte apocryphe du VIe siecle qui jouissait d'une grande autorite parce qu'il etait cense avoir ete ecrit par un ancien combattant de la guerre de Troie. Et l'epopee de Joseph s'oppose au roman de Benoit sur bien des points : au didactisme simplificateur de Benoit, Joseph oppose une remarquable connaissance de l'histoire et de la mythologie antiques qui s'exprime sous une forme codee, par le biais de periphrases et d'allusions; a l'optimisme de Benoit, qui cherche des modeles dans les heros antiques, il oppose le pessimisme d'un monde desenchante domine par la mort, les vices des humains et les jeux de la Fortune. Il parvient ainsi - et c'est la le deuxieme interet de l'Iliade - a produire une oeuvre d'un esthetisme raffine, stylistiquement dominee par l'influence des poetes Stace et Claudien, une oeuvre dont certains passages (par exemple, le recit de la chute de Troie) sont d'une grande intensite et temoignent d'une tres belle reussite poetique. Pratiquant tous les genres et tous les tons, de l'elegie a la satire, du burlesque a l'aulique, d'une incroyable virtuosite verbale, il nous fait partager la vie compliquee de la cour mediceenne et les moeurs de la Florence convulsive de cette deuxieme moitie du quattrocento. Son attachement a un aristotelisme teinte d'avveroisme, son refus du mysticisme esthetisant de Marsile Ficin offrent un temoignage precieux et souvent troublant de la pensee intellectuelle et religieuse de son temps. Surtout, il apporta au texte de l?Evangile, base sur des manuscrits et travaux provenant de Fulda, abbaye fondee par Boniface, des adaptations d?ordre sociologique propres a susciter l?adhesion des peuples rudes et fiers de ces contrees nordiques. En ce sens, le Heliand n?est pas seulement une reprise de l?Evangile : il est aussi le document particulier par lequel les evangelisateurs des pays riverains de la Mer du Nord font entrer le lecteur dans la societe des nouveaux convertis d?entre Weser, Ems et Lauwers, fraichement vaincus et soumis par les Francs. La presente traduction, en prose, est accompagnee du texte germanique tel qu?edite a Halle en 1878 par Eduard Sievers, et de commentaires et annotations. The Dominican Thomas of Cantimpre (c. 1200-c. 1270) was a key figure in the 'evangelical awakening' of the thirteenth century. A prolific hagiographer, he lauded such diverse subjects as the abbot and apostolic preacher John of Cantimpre; the teenage saint Margaret of Ypres, an urban recluse who died at 21; Lutgard of Aywieres, a Cistercian nun and mystic; and the theatrical, mentally troubled Christina 'the Astonishing' of St-Trond. Thomas had few peers in portraying the ritual theatre of penance. He gives us such memorable scenes as a naked moneylender led out of a pit by a rope, a formerly rapacious prince kissing his peasants? feet as he restores their stolen goods, St Christina leaping into fires and boiling cauldrons to save souls in purgatory, and the deceased Pope Innocent III in agony, begging St Lutgard for her prayers. ‎Summary The phrase 'Jus Uncommon' summarizes England's claim to independence from Europe, a claim supported by its unique legal system and Elizabethan theatre, and their strong interconnexion. Elizabethan tragedy begins at the Inns of Court. It was no mere coincidence, but a result of the long history of intersecting processes of law, politics, and theatre. This book sets out to contextualize and explore such legal and literary intersections, charting the emergence of Elizabethan legal culture from its various English and European sources over the course of the four hundred years running from Magna Carta to Shakespeare. It encompasses the major strands of legal history and culture that formed the background to Elizabethan political drama, republican tradition, theories of monarchical sovereignty,?European and English theories of?imperium,?pedagogical and rhetorical practices of the Inns of Court,?legal-antiquarian research, parliamentary privilege, and Tudor political pamphleteering. ‎Summary The Old English Life of Saint Pantaleon survives in one eleventh century manuscript: it appears here for the first time in an easily available edition. Identifying Gower's rhetorical cornerstones in Aristotelian pathos, the theology of the Word, and the execution of a plain style, it provides fresh interpretations of poems in Latin, French, and Middle English that arise from an enhanced understanding of Gower's literary methods. It explores the classical and medieval rhetorical traditions that informed Gower's craft, the biblical personae through which the poet achieved his rhetorical aims, and the Renaissance publishers and authors who valued and imitated his strategies for composition. Gower adapted his rhetorical theory from the principles of Aristotelian texts, Augustinian theology, exemplars of Ciceronian style, and the dictates of various artes poetriae; from the latter, John of Garland's Parisiana Poetria is especially important for outlining practices of Marian rhetoric. Modelling virtuous female speakers on the Virgin and prophetic narrators on John the Baptist and John the Evangelist, Gower gave extra-scriptural voice to members of the extended Holy Family and in so doing, achieved unimpeachable expressions inside classically informed structures of discourse. The epistolary structure, proceeding from Ciceronian rhetoric and the artes dictaminis, is one among Gower's favoured rhetorical forms for projecting singular voices. His straightforward, reiterative style in Middle English and his virginal speakers compelled Renaissance publisher Thomas Berthelette and celebrated authors Ben Jonson and William Shakespeare to praise Gower's rhetoric in prefaces and imitate it on the stage. ‎Summary This study offers a novel paradigm for explaining the late-medieval Anglo-Latin verse, by analyzing the development of the writings of the English poet John Gower (ca. 1330-1408), who made major contributions to English- and French-language poetry, in addition to being the pre-eminent Latin poet of the ?Age of Chaucer.? In addition to translating amongst the three languages in which he worked, Gower invented a plain style for Latin ?public poetry? that was like his better-known English-language Confessio amantis in emphasizing regular prosodic simplicity; and his plain style was emulated by other Anglo-Latin poets. Gower's Latin public poetry contradicts the other kinds of Latin verse in use in England at the time: on the one hand, the demotic accentual-syllabic rhymed verse in use amongst clerical controversialists and other kinds of social polemicists, characterized by language-mixing and prosodic fluidity within individual poems; and on the other, the hyper-sophisticated poetria nova of the schoolmen. At the end of his career, however, Gower rejected his own plain-style Latin-verse invention to take up instead the late scholastic style, but only at the moment of its decadence, when the humanist neo-classicism that disdained scholasticism would already have begun to arrive in England.‎

The Austin friar John Capgrave attended Rome for the Jubilee in 1450, including the Lenten stations, and his Solace of Pilgrimes, intended as a guide for subsequent pilgrims, was written up following the author's own pilgrimage. In three parts it covers the ancient monuments, the seven principal churches and the Lenten stations, and other churches of note, especially those dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The work has been described as the most ambitious description of Rome in Middle English. The present edition offers a new Text based on a transcription of the author's holograph manuscript. ‎Summary This volume aims at filling a major gap in international literature concerning the knowledge of the Latin language and literature by Post-Byzantine scholars from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Most of them, immigrants to the West after the Fall of Byzantium, harmoniously integrated into their host countries, practiced and perfected their knowledge of the Latin language and literature, excelled in arts and letters and, in many cases, managed to obtain civil, political and clerical offices. They wrote original poetic and prose works in Latin, for literary, scholarly and/or political purposes. They also translated Greek texts into Latin, and vice versa. The contributors to this volume explore the multifaceted aspects of the knowledge of the Latin language and literature by these scholars. Among the many issues addressed in the volume are: the reasons that urged Post-Byzantine scholars to compose Latin works and disseminate Ancient Greek works to the West and Latin texts to the East, their audience, the fate of their projects, and their relations among them and with Western scholars. In the contents of the volume one can find well known Post-Byzantine scholars such as Bessarion or Isidore of Kiev, as well as lesser known authors like Ioannis Gemistos, Nikolaos Sekoundinos and others. ‎Summary The Pore Caitif is an anonymous late fourteenth-century manual of devotion and religious instruction destined for a lay readership. The text, in its various forms, circulated widely and was evidently very popular, as the fifty of so extant manuscripts and fragments readily attest. Of them, no fewer that twenty-eight transmit a full text showing remarkable fidelity to the now presumably lost archetype. As such, the Pore Caitif invites comparison with the considerable production and diffusion of religious texts in English which figure prominently in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. In this respect, it is to note that some critics have argued for the presence of Lollard interpolators or commentators in a number of the extant manuscripts, including the influence of the Wycliffite Bible translation. This edition will be published in two volumes. This, the first, provides a full Introduction to the manuscripts and their transmission, classifying them in groups, while examining some of the trends observable in some of the more notable variants they inevitably preserve. A commentary on the text is followed by a full glossary. The second volume will discuss manuscript relationships and the problems arising therefrom. ‎Summary This sophisticated volume sheds new light on the transmission of texts in the medieval period by drawing into dialogue a study of medieval translation between English and French with questions concerning the Chaucerian canon and its reception. The author takes as a focus point three Middle English translations of French-language works - The Romaunt of the Rose, the Belle Dame Sans Mercy, and An ABC to the Virgin - and assesses the way in which these works respond to and reconfigure their source material, while at the same time questioning how the connection of these translations with Chaucer has influenced our critical understanding of them. In this book, these three translations are therefore removed from their habitual place on the fringes of the English Chaucer canon, and are instead analysed in the context of late-medieval literary and cultural hybridity. The result is a fascinating reconceptualization of these works as creative, cross-channel participations in late- medieval debates, and simultaneously a call for the reappraisal of 'the Chaucerian' as a critical category.‎
