Last year the New York Times carried a front page story about "conservatives" taking a "new tack" by establishing "beachheads" for programs in Western Civilization and American Institutions in which the ancient Greeks hold pride of place. The contributors to When Worlds Elide are also invested in having Greek philosophy literature and political theory taken seriously in contemporary debates-whether over modes of interpreting Plato Athenian democracy gender ethnicity or materiality. What distinguishes this book is the substantive range of the essays in it and the generative potentialities of "using" ancient authors and events in analyzing these debates. It begins from the premise that "the Greeks" like "the French" or "the Chinese" obscures the contested histories of ethnic geographic and political formations in favor of an idealized dehistoricized collectivity. The also book also illustrates the ways in which ancient texts must be understood within the history of interpretative practices which means that "the Greeks" are more a moving target than a stable entity and that each generation of interlocutors formulates continually transforming questions readings and arguments. Else book is fine. ; This book examines the comic and philosophical aspects of Apuleius' Metamorphoses the ancient Roman novel also known as The Golden Ass. The tales that comprise the novel long known for their bawdiness and wit describe the adventures of Lucius a man who is transformed into an ass. Carl Schlam argues that the work cannot be seen as purely comic or wholly serious; he says that the entertainment offered by the novel includes a vision of the possibilities of grace and salvation. Many critics have seen a discontinuity between the comedic aspects of the first ten tales and the more elevated account in the eleventh of the initiation of Lucius into the cult of Isis. But Schlam uncovers patterns of narrative and a thematic structure that give coherence to the adventures of Lucius and to the diversity of tales embedded in the principal narrative. Schlam sees a single seriocomic purpose pervading the narrative which is marked by elements of burlesque as well as intimations of an ethical religious purpose. As Schlam points out however the world of second-century Rome cannot easily be divided into the sacred and the secular. Such neat distinctions were largely unknown in the ancient world and Apuleius' tales are a part of a tradition flowing from Homer that addressed both religious and philosophical issues; 192 pages . DJ is somewhat tatty. ; 312 pages; It has long been assumed that the language of Roman poetry was constructed under the dictates of elaborately defined rules of rhetoric and its content determined according to the system of comparable classifications called invention. This belief has persisted in spite of the difficulty of fitting the works of Catullus Horace Virgil Propertius and Tibullus into such a rigid scheme. In this book Gordon Williams demonstrates that although Ovid and his successors did indeed assimilate their poetry to the rhetorical rules devised for prose the earlier poets employed a quite different method. Williams sees this method as falling into either a metaphorical or metonymic mode both of which permitted the poet "to say one thing and mean another." Delicate and often startling transitions of thought could be grasped-though not necessarily on first reading-by readers "assumed by the poet to have a special access to the poet's process of thought." This access presupposed similarities of "education social position and sympathetic understanding." Through close analyses of many poems Williams shows how poets in the fifty years before Horace's death exploited metaphor metonymy and a third device that he calls thematic anticipation to evoke subtle associations of thought.
