CHRONOLOGY OF THE ANCIENT WORLD
Thames and Hudson. Near Fine. 1980. Revised Edition. Softcover. 0500271518 . Absolute dates of events in ancient history have been difficult to calculate because of the complex adjustments and computations involved. The methods of relative dating developed by archaeologists and of direct dating established by modern science depend upon the interpretation of historical material which is virtually inaccessible. Using dates supplied by the ancients themselves Bickerman suggests the means to convert them into units of our own dating system thus providing an invaluable reference for all students of the ancient world. ; Aspects of Greek and Roman Life; 223 pages . THEATROKRATIA Collected Papers on the Politics and Staging of Greco-Roman Tragedy
Georg Olms Verlag. Fine. 2006. Softcover. 3487128551 . The volume gathers for the first time thirty-five scattered articles by Calder published 1958-1998 concerned with the political content of selected tragedies and their staging from Thespis to Seneca. An historian seeks to see tragedies in context whether Pericles Athens or Neros Rome. He regularly contests the opinio communis. Eumenides protests against Periclean reform. Zeus in Prometheus is the tyrant Demos. Kreon not Antigone is the hero of Antigone. Neoptolemos in Philoctetes is a clever deceiver from the start. Sophocles Oinomaos was the inspiration of the East Pediment at Olympia. Atreus in Senecas Thyestes is the model whom Nero is urged to follow. The usual size of the Senecan chorus was three never fifteen. Thespis chorus was six. A careful index locorum antiquorum ends the volume and makes the material easily accessible. ; Spudasmata Band 104; 431 pages . Georg Olms Verlag paperback

THE SOUL OF TRAGEDY Essays on Athenian Drama
University Of Chicago Press. Fine. 2006. Softcover. 0226653064 . Faint shelfwear else fine. ; 312 pages; The Soul of Tragedy brings together top scholars to offer a wide range of perspectives on Greek tragedy. The collection pays homage to this ancient enduring theatrical and literary genre by offering a deep exploration into the oldest form of dramatic expression. It is a reminder that for all their years these dramas still have much to teach us. Exemplary of the nature and scope of this book the essays range from Simon Goldhill's comparative study of music gender and culture to Martha Nussbaum's inspection of "the comic soul." Through the critical lenses of psychoanalysis gender social history and philology this compilation looks at Greek tragedy's peculiar power to illuminate the workings of the human soul. Structures of tragic meaning the relationship between character desire and spectator experience and investigations of tragedy's extraordinary preoccupation with gender reveal the form's emotional core and explain its rapid ascent through the hierarchy of cultural practices in classical Greece. The Soul of Tragedy is a celebration and a model of collaboration that will be essential reading for scholars in classics literature and drama. . University Of Chicago Press paperback

Burnett, Anne Pippin
REVENGE IN ATTIC AND LATER TRAGEDY
University of California Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1998. Hardcover. 0520210964 . Underlining in pencil to a couple of pages. Minor shelfwear to book. DJ has edgewear and minor dents to front panel. ; Sather Classical Lectures; 1.12 x 9.25 x 6.25 Inches; 384 pages; Modern readings of ancient Athenian drama tend to view it as a presentation of social or moral problems as if ancient drama showed the same realism seen on the present-day stage. Such views are belied by the plays themselves in which supremely violent actions occur in a legendary time and place distinct both from reality and from the ethics of ordinary life. Offering fresh readings of Attic tragedy Anne Pippin Burnett urges readers to peel away twentieth-century attitudes toward vengeance and reconsider the revenge tragedies of ancient Athens in their own context. After a consideration of how our view of Elizabethan drama has obscured an accurate view of the ancient tragedies Burnett reviews early Greek notions of vengeance as expressed in the Odyssey Heracles' tales Pindar's odes Attic judicial processes and the legend of Harmodius and Aristogeiton. Then setting aside post-Platonic and Judeo-Christian notions of criminality she provides new interpretations of all the Attic tragedies in which revenge is a central theme: Aeschylus' Libation Bearers Sophocles' Ajax Electra and Tereus and Euripides' Children of Heracles Hecuba Medea Electra and Orestes. Burnett shows that for the ancients revenge meant a redress of imbalances in both human and divine worlds achieved through human actions. The vengeful heroines thus appear in a new light. Electra Hecuba Medea and others cease to be the picture of depravity in dramas that are grotesque and sensational and are instead representative human figures who respond with grandeur to the outsize demands of necessity and supernatural powers. . Loraux, Nicole; Elizabeth Trapnell Rawlings (translated) & Pietro Pucci (Foreword)
THE MOURNING VOICE An Essay on Greek Tragedy
Cornell University Press. Very Good in Near Fine dust jacket. 2002. Hardcover. 0801438306 . Underlining in pencil to a few pages. ; 4In The Mourning Voice Nicole Loraux presents a radical challenge to what has become the dominant view of tragedy in recent years: that tragedy is primarily a civic phenomenon infused with Athenian political ideology which envisions its spectators first and foremost as citizens members of the political collective. Instead Loraux maintains the spectator addressed by tragedy is the individual defined primarily in terms of his or her humanity rather than in terms of affiliation with a political group. The plays she says involve the spectators in the emotional expressiveness of tragic suffering thereby creating a theatrical identity. Aroused by the experience of suffering the audience is reminded that it is witnessing a theatrical representation of the instability of the human conditiona state that Loraux asserts tragedy is uniquely suited to convey. ; Cornell Studies in Classical Philology Vol. LVIII; 127 pages . Foley, Helene P.
FEMALE ACTS IN GREEK TRAGEDY
Princeton University Press. Very Good. 2003. Softcover. 0691094926 . Very light shelfwear. Spine a bit sunned. Very light pencilling to a couple of pages. ; Martin Classial Lectures; 424 pages; Although Classical Athenian ideology did not permit women to exercise legal economic and social autonomy the tragedies of Aeschylus Sophocles and Euripides often represent them as influential social and moral forces in their own right. Scholars have struggled to explain this seeming contradiction. Helene Foley shows how Greek tragedy uses gender relations to explore specific issues in the development of the social political and intellectual life in the polis. She investigates three central and problematic areas in which tragic heroines act independently of men: death ritual and lamentation marriage and the making of significant ethical choices. Her anthropological approach together with her literary analysis allows for an unusually rich context in which to understand gender relations in ancient Greece. This book examines for example the tragic response to legislation regulating family life that may have begun as early as the sixth century. It also draws upon contemporary studies of virtue ethics and upon feminist reconsiderations of the Western ethical tradition. Foley maintains that by viewing public issues through the lens of the family tragedy asks whether public and private morality can operate on the same terms. Moreover the plays use women to represent significant moral alternatives. Tragedy thus exploits reinforces and questions cultural clichés about women and gender in a fashion that resonates with contemporary Athenian social and political issues. . Rejecting the traditional source of political support the bonds of friendship philia in favor of direct appeals to the people demos they signaled the emergence of a new pattern of politics. HOMER: ILIAD Book XXIV 24
Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 2001. Softcover. 0521286204 . Very light Pencil underlining to about 3-4 pages. ; Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics; 176 pages; The twenty-fourth book of the Iliad - the account of Priam's ransoming of Hector's body from Achilles - is one of the masterpieces of world literature a work of interest to a far wider audience than scholars of ancient Greek. In this edition Colin Macleod tries to reach both scholars and Greekless readers alike. In his commentary he gives help to readers unfamiliar with the language of Homer and discusses problems of content and expression never treating this book in isolation but drawing attention to Homer's artistry and thought in the context of the whole of the Iliad. In his introduction Mr Macleod examines Homer's notion of poetry his style and language and the architecture and meaning of his work. He tries to show why Book XXIV is a proper conclusion to the Iliad. This is an edition for classical scholars undergraduates and students in the upper forms of schools. The introduction and substantial parts of the commentary require no knowledge of Greek and should find readers among all who are interested in European literature. . MORTALS AND IMMORTALS Collected Essays
Princeton University Press. Very Good. 1992. Softcover. 0691019312 . Minor pencilling to a few pages. ; This collection of nineteen essays delves into themes such as: death the body the soul the individual and relations between mortals and immortals; the mask the mirror the image and the imagination; the self and the other and the concept of otherness itself or "alterity." "Vernant's work ranges across the entire field of ancient Greek religion philosophy and literature and joins exacting philological scholarship to exciting and innovative theoretical paradigms. Not since Jane Harrison and Gilbert Murray has a classicist commanded the attention of non-classicists in the way Vernant has over the last twenty-five years." --Choice; Mythos; 352 pages . Gruen, Erich S.
RETHINKING THE OTHER IN ANTIQUITY
Princeton University Press. Very Good. 2012. Softcover. 0691156352 . A couple of pages corner creased. Minor shelfwear. ; Prevalent among classicists today is the notion that Greeks Romans and Jews enhanced their own self-perception by contrasting themselves with the so-called Other--Egyptians Phoenicians Ethiopians Gauls and other foreigners--frequently through hostile stereotypes distortions and caricature. In this provocative book Erich Gruen demonstrates how the ancients found connections rather than contrasts how they expressed admiration for the achievements and principles of other societies and how they discerned--and even invented--kinship relations and shared roots with diverse peoples. Gruen shows how the ancients incorporated the traditions of foreign nations and imagined blood ties and associations with distant cultures through myth legend and fictive histories. He looks at a host of creative tales including those describing the founding of Thebes by the Phoenician Cadmus Rome's embrace of Trojan and Arcadian origins and Abraham as ancestor to the Spartans. Gruen gives in-depth readings of major texts by Aeschylus Herodotus Xenophon Plutarch Julius Caesar Tacitus and others in addition to portions of the Hebrew Bible revealing how they offer richly nuanced portraits of the alien that go well beyond stereotypes and caricature. Providing extraordinary insight into the ancient world this controversial book explores how ancient attitudes toward the Other often expressed mutuality and connection and not simply contrast and alienation. ; Martin Classical Lectures; 416 pages . Manville, Philip Brook
THE ORIGINS OF CITIZENSHIP IN ANCIENT ATHENS
Princeton University Press. Very Good. 1997. Softcover. 0691600929 . Underlining in pencil to a few pages. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 288 pages; In this unusual synthesis of political and socio- economic history Philip Manville demonstrates that citizenship for the Athenians was not merely a legal construct but rather a complex concept that was both an institution and a mode of social behavior. He further shows that it was not static as most scholarship has assumed but rather has slowly evolved over time. The work is also an explanation of the origins and development of the polis. . Minor crease through upper corner of book. ; Greeks and Barbarians examines ancient Greek conceptions of the "other." THE DAILY LIFE OF THE GREEK GODS
Stanford University Press. Very Good. 2000. Softcover. 0804736146 . Underlining in pencil to a few pages. ; Despite the rousing stories of male heroism in battles the Trojan War transcended the activities of its human participants. For Homer it was the gods who conducted and accounted for what happened. In the first part of this book the authors find in Homer s Iliad material for exploring the everyday life of the Greek gods: what their bodies were made of and how they were nourished the organization of their society and the sort of life they led both in Olympus and in the human world. The gods are divided in their human nature: at once a fantasized model of infinite joys and an edifying example of engagement in the world they have loves festivities and quarrels. In the second part the authors show how citizens carried on everyday relations with the gods and those who would become the Olympians inviting them to reside with humans organized in cities. At the heart of rituals and of social life the gods were omnipresent: in sacrifices at meals in political assemblies in war in sexuality. In brief the authors show how the gods were indispensable to the everyday social organization of Greek cities. ; Mestizo Spaces; 0.71 x 8.5 x 5.56 Inches; 287 pages .
