GREEK INSECTS
Oxford University Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1986. Hardcover. 0195205480 . Old price sticker to front inner cover. Minor shelfwear to DJ. ; 208 pages; This authoritative study of Greek insects treats not only the obvious questions of their identity--in modern terms of species and genera--but also such topics as the etymologies both formal and popular of the various insect names the folklore religious and other signficant associations and the differences in attitude shown toward them by the ancient and modern world. Patterned after two famous studies by D'Arcy Thompson--A Glossary of Greek Birds and A Glossary of Greek Fishes--this volume provides a meticulous survey of the topic examining the ancient literature and the enormous secondary literature connected with it as well as the most recent scientific findings. Like Thompson's glossaries this work focuses primarily on evidence from literature and art with later evidence brought in only when needed for a full understanding of the facts. Compiled by a classics scholar working with a zoologist this glossary provides alphabetically-arranged entries on such common insects as the ant the louse the butterfly the wasp the bedbug the cricket and the praying mantis. The first comprehensive study on this subject Greek Insects belongs on the bookshelf of every Greek scholar and it will be of considerable interest to educated readers. . DJ is creased and does not sit square. This authoritative new work attempts to bridge the gap that usually divides Greek religion from Greek history setting it firmly in the thick of contemporary events and politics. How did people actually worship the gods Was Socrates's trial a crisis for religion or the state or both These are among the key issues addressed in what promises to be the definitive work on the subject for many years to come. . DJ is browned. ; Original 1927 Edition ; 346 pages; One of the major scholars of the 1920s and 30s concerned with the origins of Greek drama Sir Arthur Pickard-Cambridge focused in particular on the evidence derived from archaeological finds and papyri. He describes this history of the earliest stages of Greek drama as "a dispassionate attempt to ascertain historical truth or probability by methods as logical as the subject permits. "The study begins by bringing together what was known of the dithyramb and argues against Aristotle's statement that tragedy originated from the leaders of the dithyramb and against the theory put forward by Sir William Ridgeway that it originated in performances at the tombs of dead heroes. . INTERPRETATIONS OF GREEK MYTHOLOGY
Croom Helm. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1987. Hardcover. 0709932707 . Bmp to upper edge of rear board. Scholar's name to ffep Jenifer Neils. Else Minor shelfwear. DJ has minor shelfwear. ; Interpretations of Greek Mythology first published in1987 builds on the innovative work of Walter Burkert and the Paris school of Jean-Pierre Vernant and represents a renewal of interpretation of Greek mythology. The contributors to this volume present a variety of approaches to the Greek myths all of which eschew a monolithic or exclusively structuralist hermeneutic method. Specifically the notion that mythology can simply be read as a primitive mode of narrative history is rejected with emphasis instead being placed on the relationships between mythology and history ritual and political genealogy. The essays concentrate on some of the best known characters and themes Oedipus Orpheus Narcissus reflecting the complexity and fascination of the Greek imagination. The volume will long remain an indispensable tool for the study of Greek mythology and it is of great interest to anyone interested in the development of Greek culture and civilisation and the nature of myth. ; 294 pages; The volume's fundamental concern is with how the Greeks conceptualized the experience of poetry and debated the values of that experience. The book's organizing theme is a recurrent Greek dialectic between ideas of poetry as on the one hand a powerfully enthralling experience in its own right a kind of 'ecstasy' and on the other a medium for the expression of truths which can exercise lasting influence on its audiences' views of the world. Citing a wide range of modern scholarship and making frequent connections with later periods of literary theory and aesthetics Halliwell questions many orthodoxies and received opinions about the texts analysed. The resulting perspective casts new light on ways in which the Greeks attempted to make sense of the psychology of poetic experience - including the roles of emotion ethics imagination and knowledge - in the life of their culture . Oxford University Press. Very Good-. 1996. Softcover. 0198150709 . Some pencil notes and marginalia Jenifer Neils. Some edgewear with laminate lifting along lower edge of rear wrap. Faint creasing. ; This book challenges the widely held view that Greek pottery vases were objects of great value in antiquity commissioned by rich patrons from the greatest artists of the day. Instead they are shown to have been simply low cost versions of tableware originally made in silver and gold. Vickers and Gill demonstrates how Greek pottery first came to be regarded as a high value commodity in the eighteenth century thanks to clever if not fraudulent sales techniques. They explore the ways in which work in gold and silver influenced painted pottery and examine the primary sources both literary and epigraphic to find what materials the ancients did consider to be important. ; 0.58 x 9.67 x 7.46 Inches; 254 pages . Very light wear to book. ; Religions in the Graeco-Roman World; 473 pages; The Early Amazons offers a new understanding of the ancient Amazon myth situating mythical representations in the realm of cultural history. Topics included are nineteenth-century historiography and the interest in linguistics. The second section sheds new light on the culture of archaic Greece offering a coherent assessment of literary and visual representations. Taking mythical narrative as a form of oral storytelling it shows the emergence of the Amazon motif and its meaning in the world of epic. Iconographical analysis reveals how the visual arts have made a contribution of their own to the imaginary presence of the Amazons. . E. J. Brill hardcover

THE FALL OF TROY IN EARLY GREEK POETRY AND ART
Oxford University Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1997. Hardcover. 0198150644 . Dustjacket has very minor shelfwear. Review of book by Jenifer Neils- also her copy tipped in. ; Oxford Classical Monographs; 0.85 x 8.75 x 5.62 Inches; 304 pages; Greek myth-makers crafted the downfall of Troy and its rulers into an archetypal illustration of ruthless conquest deceit crime and punishment and the variability of human fortunes. This book examines the major episodes in the archetypal myth - the murder of Priam the rape of Kassandra the reunion of Helen and Menelaos and the escape of Aineias - as witnessed in Archaic Greek epic fifth-century Athenian drama and Athenian black- and red-figure vase painting. It focuses in particular on the narrative artistry with which poets and painters balanced these episodes with one another and intertwined them with other chapters in the story of Troy. The author offers the first comprehensive demonstration of the narrative centrality of the Ilioupersis myth within the corpus of Trojan epic poetry and the first systematic study of pictorial juxtapositions of Ilioupersis scenes on painted vases. . Green Richard & Eric Handley
IMAGES OF THE GREEK THEATRE
British Museum Publications. Very Good. 1995. Softcover. 0714122076 . Minor shelfwear. ; Classical Bookshelf; 127 pages; Classical Greek theatre survives not only in plays that we still read and perform but also in artistic images. Depictions of performances actors and their masks were frequent in classical times and continued to appear even beyond the fifth and sixth centuries A. D. long after the plays had ceased to be staged. These artifacts together with the remains of actual theatres and the texts of surviving plays give us an idea of how Greek drama must have appeared in its heyday. In this book Richard Green and Eric Handley outline the history of the Greek theatre drawing on the evidence supplied by the theatres themselves the surviving plays and artistic artifacts. They show and discuss painted pottery notably from fifth-century Athens and fourth-century southern Italy that records scenes from plays. Terra-cotta figures mosaics paintings metalware and gems also help them build a picture of Greek theatre. All these artifacts tell the story of Greek drama as seen through the eyes of those admirers who kept its classic moments and traditions alive and who found a place for it in the society of their own times. They help the modern playgoer and reader to imagine what a visit to the theatre in classical Greece might have been like. . British Museum Publications paperback

Morris Ian
DEATH-RITUAL AND SOCIAL STRUCTURE IN CLASSICAL ANTIQUITY
Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 1992. Softcover. 0521376114 . Very faint creasing to wraps. ; In this innovative book Dr Morris seeks to show the many ways in which the excavated remains of burials can and should be a major source of evidence for social historians of the ancient Graeco-Roman world. Burials have a far wider geographical and social range than the surviving literary texts which were mainly written for a small elite. They provide us with unique insights into how Greeks and Romans constituted and interpreted their own communities. In particular burials enable the historian to study social change. Ian Morris illustrates the great potential of the material in these respects with examples drawn from societies as diverse in time space and political context as archaic Rhodes classical Athens early imperial Rome and the last days of the western Roman empire.1. The anthropology of a dead world 2. 'Mos Romanus': cremation and inhumation in the Roman empire 3. 'Dem bones': skeletal remains 4. Taking it with you: grave-goods and Athenian democracy 5. Monuments to the dead: display and wealth in classical Greece 6. Famous last words: the inscribed tombstone 7. At the bottom of the graves: an example of analysis ; Key Themes in Ancient History . Taplin, Oliver
COMIC ANGELS And Other Approaches to Greek Drama through Vase-Paintings
Oxford University Press. Very Good. 1994. Softcover. 0198150008 . Spine is sunned and discolored. Else very light shelfwear. ; Clarendon Paperbacks; 168 pages; This book opens a neglected chapter in the reception of Athenian drama especially comedy and gives center stage to a particularly attractive and entertaining series of vase-paintings which have generally been regarded as marginal curiosities. These are the so-called "phylax vases" nearly all painted in Greek cities of South Italy in the period 400 to 360 B. C. Until now they have been taken to reflect a sort of local folk-theater but Taplin argues that most if not all reflect Athenian comedy of the sort represented by Aristophanes. His bold thesis brings up questions about the relation of tragedy as well as comedy to vase painting the cultural climate of the Greek cities in Italy and the extent to which Athenians were aware of drama as a potential "export." It also enriches appreciation of many key aspects of Aristophanic comedy. The book has assembled 47 photographs of vase-paintings many printed here for the first time outside specialist publications not readily accessible. . Oxford University Press paperback

IMAGES IN MIND Statues in Archaic and Classical Greek Literature and Thought
Princeton University Press. Very Good. 2002. Softcover. 0691094888 . Very faint crease through upper corner. Else minor shelfwear. ; In archaic and classical Greece statues played a constant role in people's religious political economic aesthetic and mental lives. Evidence of many kinds demonstrates that ancient Greeks thought about--and interacted with--statues in ways very different from our own. This book recovers ancient thinking about statues by approaching them through contemporary literary sources. It not only shows that ancient viewers conceived of images as more operative than aesthetic but additionally reveals how poets and philosophers found in sculpture a practice ''good to think with.' Tzanetou, Angeliki
CITY OF SUPPLIANTS Tragedy and the Athenian Empire
University of Texas Press. Very Good. 2013. Softcover. 0292754329 . Very faint shelfwear. Gift inscription from author to Jenifer Neils on ffep. ; After fending off Persia in the fifth century BCE Athens assumed a leadership position in the Aegean world. Initially it led the Delian League a military alliance against the Persians but eventually the league evolved into an empire with Athens in control and exacting tribute from its former allies. Athenians justified this subjection of their allies by emphasizing their fairness and benevolence towards them which gave Athens the moral right to lead. But Athenians also believed that the strong rule over the weak and that dominating others allowed them to maintain their own freedom. These conflicting views about Athens' imperial rule found expression in the theater and this book probes how the three major playwrights dramatized Athenian imperial ideology. Through close readings of Aeschylus' Eumenides Euripides' Children of Heracles and Sophocles' Oedipus at Colonus as well as other suppliant dramas Angeliki Tzanetou argues that Athenian tragedy performed an important ideological function by representing Athens as a benevolent and moral ruler that treated foreign suppliants compassionately. She shows how memorable and disenfranchised figures of tragedy such as Orestes and Oedipus or the homeless and tyrant-pursued children of Heracles were generously incorporated into the public body of Athens thus reinforcing Athenians' sense of their civic magnanimity. This fresh reading of the Athenian suppliant plays deepens our understanding of how Athenians understood their political hegemony and reveals how core Athenian values such as justice freedom piety and respect for the laws intersected with imperial ideology. ; 206 pages; Signed by Author . Giesecke, Annette L.
THE EPIC CITY Urbanism Utopia and the Garden in Ancient Greece and Rome
Center for Hellenic Studies. Very Good. 2007. Softcover. 0674023749 . Very faint shelfwear else fine. ; As Greek and Trojan forces battled in the shadow of Troy's wall Hephaistos created a wondrous ornately decorated shield for Achilles. At the Shield's center lay two walled cities one at war and one at peace surrounded by fields and pasturelands. Viewed as Homer's blueprint for an ideal or utopian social order the Shield reveals that restraining and taming Nature would be fundamental to the Hellenic urban quest. It is this ideal that Classical Athens with her utilitarian view of Nature exemplified. In a city lacking pleasure gardens it was particularly worthy of note when Epicurus created his garden oasis within the dense urban fabric. The disastrous results of extreme anthropocentrism would promote an essentially nostalgic desire to break down artificial barriers between humanity and Nature. This new ideal vividly expressed through the domestication of Nature in villas and gardens and also through primitivist and Epicurean tendencies in Latin literature informed the urban endeavors of Rome. ; Hellenic Studies 21; 8.9 X 5.4 X 0.5 inches; 220 pages .
