‎Burnett, Anne Pippin‎

‎REVENGE IN ATTIC AND LATER TRAGEDY‎

‎University of California Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1998. Hardcover. 0520210964 . Underlining in pencil to a couple of pages. Minor shelfwear to book. DJ has edgewear and minor dents to front panel. ; Sather Classical Lectures; 1.12 x 9.25 x 6.25 Inches; 384 pages; Modern readings of ancient Athenian drama tend to view it as a presentation of social or moral problems as if ancient drama showed the same realism seen on the present-day stage. Such views are belied by the plays themselves in which supremely violent actions occur in a legendary time and place distinct both from reality and from the ethics of ordinary life. Offering fresh readings of Attic tragedy Anne Pippin Burnett urges readers to peel away twentieth-century attitudes toward vengeance and reconsider the revenge tragedies of ancient Athens in their own context. After a consideration of how our view of Elizabethan drama has obscured an accurate view of the ancient tragedies Burnett reviews early Greek notions of vengeance as expressed in the Odyssey Heracles' tales Pindar's odes Attic judicial processes and the legend of Harmodius and Aristogeiton. Then setting aside post-Platonic and Judeo-Christian notions of criminality she provides new interpretations of all the Attic tragedies in which revenge is a central theme: Aeschylus' Libation Bearers Sophocles' Ajax Electra and Tereus and Euripides' Children of Heracles Hecuba Medea Electra and Orestes. Burnett shows that for the ancients revenge meant a redress of imbalances in both human and divine worlds achieved through human actions. The vengeful heroines thus appear in a new light. Electra Hecuba Medea and others cease to be the picture of depravity in dramas that are grotesque and sensational and are instead representative human figures who respond with grandeur to the outsize demands of necessity and supernatural powers. . ‎Loraux, Nicole; Elizabeth Trapnell Rawlings (translated) & Pietro Pucci (Foreword)‎

‎THE MOURNING VOICE An Essay on Greek Tragedy‎

‎Cornell University Press. Very Good in Near Fine dust jacket. 2002. Hardcover. 0801438306 . Underlining in pencil to a few pages. ; 4In The Mourning Voice Nicole Loraux presents a radical challenge to what has become the dominant view of tragedy in recent years: that tragedy is primarily a civic phenomenon infused with Athenian political ideology which envisions its spectators first and foremost as citizens members of the political collective. Instead Loraux maintains the spectator addressed by tragedy is the individual defined primarily in terms of his or her humanity rather than in terms of affiliation with a political group. The plays she says involve the spectators in the emotional expressiveness of tragic suffering thereby creating a theatrical identity. Aroused by the experience of suffering the audience is reminded that it is witnessing a theatrical representation of the instability of the human condition—a state that Loraux asserts tragedy is uniquely suited to convey. ; Cornell Studies in Classical Philology Vol. LVIII; 127 pages . ‎Foley, Helene P.‎

‎FEMALE ACTS IN GREEK TRAGEDY‎

‎Princeton University Press. Very Good. 2003. Softcover. 0691094926 . Very light shelfwear. Spine a bit sunned. Very light pencilling to a couple of pages. ; Martin Classial Lectures; 424 pages; Although Classical Athenian ideology did not permit women to exercise legal economic and social autonomy the tragedies of Aeschylus Sophocles and Euripides often represent them as influential social and moral forces in their own right. Scholars have struggled to explain this seeming contradiction. Helene Foley shows how Greek tragedy uses gender relations to explore specific issues in the development of the social political and intellectual life in the polis. She investigates three central and problematic areas in which tragic heroines act independently of men: death ritual and lamentation marriage and the making of significant ethical choices. Her anthropological approach together with her literary analysis allows for an unusually rich context in which to understand gender relations in ancient Greece. This book examines for example the tragic response to legislation regulating family life that may have begun as early as the sixth century. It also draws upon contemporary studies of virtue ethics and upon feminist reconsiderations of the Western ethical tradition. Foley maintains that by viewing public issues through the lens of the family tragedy asks whether public and private morality can operate on the same terms. Moreover the plays use women to represent significant moral alternatives. Tragedy thus exploits reinforces and questions cultural clichés about women and gender in a fashion that resonates with contemporary Athenian social and political issues. . ‎THE NEW POLITICIANS OF FIFTH-CENTURY ATHENS‎

‎Hackett Publishing Company. Very Good. 1992. Softcover. 0872201422 . Old sticker to spine. Pencil underlining to a few pages. ; 218 pages; After the death of Pericles a new breed of politicians--men like Cleon Cleophon and Hyperbolus--came to power in Athens. Rejecting the traditional source of political support the bonds of friendship philia in favor of direct appeals to the people demos they signaled the emergence of a new pattern of politics. The author traces the development of this new pattern--often misunderstood often branded "demagogy" by both ancient and modern writers--by investigating the nature of political and social organization in Athens and the vocabulary of Greek politics. . ‎HOMER: ILIAD Book XXIV 24‎

‎Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 2001. Softcover. 0521286204 . Very light Pencil underlining to about 3-4 pages. ; Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics; 176 pages; The twenty-fourth book of the Iliad - the account of Priam's ransoming of Hector's body from Achilles - is one of the masterpieces of world literature a work of interest to a far wider audience than scholars of ancient Greek. In this edition Colin Macleod tries to reach both scholars and Greekless readers alike. In his commentary he gives help to readers unfamiliar with the language of Homer and discusses problems of content and expression never treating this book in isolation but drawing attention to Homer's artistry and thought in the context of the whole of the Iliad. In his introduction Mr Macleod examines Homer's notion of poetry his style and language and the architecture and meaning of his work. He tries to show why Book XXIV is a proper conclusion to the Iliad. This is an edition for classical scholars undergraduates and students in the upper forms of schools. The introduction and substantial parts of the commentary require no knowledge of Greek and should find readers among all who are interested in European literature. . ‎RETHINKING THE OTHER IN ANTIQUITY‎

‎Princeton University Press. Very Good. 2012. Softcover. 0691156352 . A couple of pages corner creased. Minor shelfwear. ; Prevalent among classicists today is the notion that Greeks Romans and Jews enhanced their own self-perception by contrasting themselves with the so-called Other--Egyptians Phoenicians Ethiopians Gauls and other foreigners--frequently through hostile stereotypes distortions and caricature. In this provocative book Erich Gruen demonstrates how the ancients found connections rather than contrasts how they expressed admiration for the achievements and principles of other societies and how they discerned--and even invented--kinship relations and shared roots with diverse peoples. Gruen shows how the ancients incorporated the traditions of foreign nations and imagined blood ties and associations with distant cultures through myth legend and fictive histories. He looks at a host of creative tales including those describing the founding of Thebes by the Phoenician Cadmus Rome's embrace of Trojan and Arcadian origins and Abraham as ancestor to the Spartans. Gruen gives in-depth readings of major texts by Aeschylus Herodotus Xenophon Plutarch Julius Caesar Tacitus and others in addition to portions of the Hebrew Bible revealing how they offer richly nuanced portraits of the alien that go well beyond stereotypes and caricature. Providing extraordinary insight into the ancient world this controversial book explores how ancient attitudes toward the Other often expressed mutuality and connection and not simply contrast and alienation. ; Martin Classical Lectures; 416 pages . Underlining in pencil to a few pages. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 288 pages; In this unusual synthesis of political and socio- economic history Philip Manville demonstrates that citizenship for the Athenians was not merely a legal construct but rather a complex concept that was both an institution and a mode of social behavior. ‎THE DAILY LIFE OF THE GREEK GODS‎

‎Stanford University Press. Very Good. 2000. Softcover. 0804736146 . Underlining in pencil to a few pages. ; Despite the rousing stories of male heroism in battles the Trojan War transcended the activities of its human participants. For Homer it was the gods who conducted and accounted for what happened. In the first part of this book the authors find in Homer s Iliad material for exploring the everyday life of the Greek gods: what their bodies were made of and how they were nourished the organization of their society and the sort of life they led both in Olympus and in the human world. The gods are divided in their human nature: at once a fantasized model of infinite joys and an edifying example of engagement in the world they have loves festivities and quarrels. In the second part the authors show how citizens carried on everyday relations with the gods and those who would become the Olympians inviting them to reside with humans organized in cities. At the heart of rituals and of social life the gods were omnipresent: in sacrifices at meals in political assemblies in war in sexuality. In brief the authors show how the gods were indispensable to the everyday social organization of Greek cities. ; Mestizo Spaces; 0.71 x 8.5 x 5.56 Inches; 287 pages . ‎SENECA: PHAEDRA Translated and with an Introduction.‎

‎Cornell University Press. Good. 1986. Softcover. 0801494338 . Underlining and notes in ink. ; Masters of Latin Literature; 128 pages; Seneca's Phaedra occupies an important and influential position in the tradition of European drama. This new edition concentrates on the play's dramatic qualities examining its Greek and Roman background. The introduction presents discussion of dramaturgy and rhetoric as well as style and textual transmission. An unusual feature is the tracing of the influence of Phaedra's story on later European literature and music. The commentary has extensive notes not only on Seneca's language but also on plot characterization and the use of myth. . Cornell University Press paperback‎

‎DIONYSOS Archetypal Image of Indestructible Life‎

‎Princeton University Press. Very Good. 1996. Softcover. 0691029156 . Underlining in pencil to a few pages. ; Mythos & Bollingen Series LXV - 2; 476 pages; No other god of the Greeks is as widely present in the monuments and nature of Greece and Italy in the sensuous tradition of antiquity as Dionysos. In myth and image in visionary experience and ritual representation the Greeks possessed a complete expression of indestructible life the essence of Dionysos. In this work the noted mythologist and historian of religion Carl Kernyi presents a historical account of the religion of Dionysos from its beginnings in the Minoan culture down to its transition to a cosmic and cosmopolitan religion of late antiquity under the Roman Empire. From the wealth of Greek literary epigraphic and monumental traditions Kernyi constructs a picture of Dionysian worship always underlining the constitutive element of myth. Included in this study are the secret cult scenes of the women's mysteries both within and beyond Attica the mystic sacrificial rite at Delphi and the great public Dionysian festivals at Athens. The way in which the Athenian people received and assimilated tragedy in its immanent connection with Dionysos is seen as the greatest miracle in all cultural history. Tragedy and New Comedy are seen as high spiritual forms of the Dionysian religion and the Dionysian element itself is seen as a chapter in the religious history of Europe. . ‎HERODOTUS READER Annotated Passages from Books I-IX of the Histories‎

‎Focus Publishing/R. Pullins Company. Fair. 2011. Softcover. 1585103047 . Pen notes and highlighting to some pages. ; Focus Classical Commentary; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 144 pages; My target audience are students who have acquired a reasonable familiarity with the fundamentals of ancient Greek grammar and who have also amassed a working vocabulary in the language but who still need help with verb forms and with certain constructions like the genitive absolute. Such students will usually have finished two years of secondary school instruction or one year of college instruction in ancient Greek. It is also my hope that this Reader will be a suitable textbook in a more advanced type of a course—we call them "author level courses" at the College of the Holy Cross—on Herodotus’ Histories where some help with the grammar is still a major desideratum and where there is also a significant focus on topics in literary criticism and on historiographical issues. . This series of twenty complementary essays by experts in the field explores the art social status reputation and image of the ancient actor in the Greek and Roman worlds from the sixth century BC to Byzantium. Numerous illustrations are included and all Greek and Latin passages are translated. This collection of twenty essays examines the art profession and idea of the actor in Greek and Roman antiquity and has been commissioned and arranged to cast as much interdisciplinary and transhistorical light as possible on these elusive but fascinating ancient professionals. It covers a chronological span from the sixth century BC to Byzantium and even beyond to the way that ancient actors have influenced the arts from the Renaissance to the twentieth century and stresses the huge geographical spread of ancient actors. Some essays focus on particular themes such as the evidence for women actors or the impact of acting on the presentation of suicide in literature others offer completely new evidence such as graffiti relating to actors in Asia Minor others ask new questions such as what subjective experience can be reconstructed for the ancient actor. There are numerous illustrations and all Greek and Latin passages are translated. Part I. The Art of the Actor: 1. The singing actors of antiquity Edith Hall 2. ‎Cambridge University Press. Good. 1987. Softcover. 0521313023 . Pages browned. Underlining and notes. Creasing to some pages. ; Landmarks of World Literature; 126 pages; Michael Silk's volume offers a prevalent assessment of The Iliad both for the Homeric specialist and general reader. His starting point is the relationship between Homer's world the eighth century BC and the remote heroic age in which the events of the punitive Greek expedition against Troy were set. He deals with the poem's historical context composition and extensive influence and stresses the coherence and inter-relations of such apparently separate aspects of the poem as its style character-portrayal and ideology. .
