THE CROWD IN ROME IN THE LATE REPUBLIC
University of Michigan Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1998. Hardcover. 0472108921 . Small tear to head of spine 1/2 cm. Else book is fine. Very light shelfwear to DJ. ; The Crowd in Rome in the Late Republic explores the consequences of a democracy in which public office could only be gained by direct election by the people. And while the Senate could indeed debate public matters advise other officeholders and make some administrative decisions it could not legislate. An officeholder who wanted to pass a law had to step out of the Senate-house and propose it to the people in the Forum. In an expansion and revision of his Thomas Spencer Jerome lectures Fergus Millar explores the development of the Roman Republic which by its final years had come to cover most of Italy. To exercise their rights voters had to come to Rome or to live in or near the city as about one third of them did and to meet in the Forum. Millar takes the period from 80 to 50 B. C. the dictatorship of Sulla to Caesar's crossing of the Rubicon and shows how crowd politics was central to the great changes that took place year after year. The volume will interest general readers as well as students of politics and Roman history. Technical terms are explained and foreign words are kept to a minimum. ; Thomas Spencer Jerome Lectures; 1.06 x 9.32 x 6.34 Inches; 256 pages . University of Michigan Press hardcover

SACRED REALM The Emergence of the Synagogue in the Ancient World. Organized by Yeshiva University Museum
Oxford University Press. Very Good. 1996. Softcover. 0195102258 . Inked name-stamp on halftitle David Levenson else unmarked. Some wear to top corners of wraps else minor shelfwear. ; Xxix 203pp illustrated. The rich tradition and profound spirituality of Judaism has touched people the world over for thousands of years. With the arrival in the Near East of Alexander the Great and the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE the synagogue came to represent a new era of this powerful religion one which witnessed a greater emphasis on shared religious experience and prayer. In turn the synagogue derived from the Greek meaning an "assembly" has come to mean the Jewish house of worship evolving into a "sacred realm" in which the Torah came to play a central role linking the biblical past with the messianic future. Of course the synagogue has been much more that a house of worship--it served the Jewish people as a place of learning a community center and often as the official seat of Jewish self-government. Indeed it is the institution most closely associated with the development of post-biblical Judaism throughout the ages. Sacred Realm: The Emergence of the Synagogue in the Ancient World offers the first comprehensive history of the architectural and archaeological development of the synagogue from the third century BCE to 700 CE. Telling the story of over one hundred ancient synagogues throughout the world and their place in the history of Judaism and of Western civilization this book provides a fascinating representation of the cultural intellectual and artistic achievements of three thousand years of Jewish experience. Informative essays detail every aspect of the ancient synagogue while beautiful illustrations and maps take the reader to the actual historic site. ; 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall; 203 pages . ROME AND THE ENEMY Imperial Strategy in the Principate
University of California Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1999. Hardcover. 0520211669 . Tiny stain to rear board and obverse of DJ else book and DJ are fine/fine. ; 1 x 9.25 x 6.25 Inches; 277 pages; How did the Romans build and maintain one of the most powerful and stable empires in the history of the world This illuminating book draws on the literature especially the historiography composed by the members of the elite who conducted Roman foreign affairs. From this evidence Susan P. Mattern reevaluates the roots motivations and goals of Roman imperial foreign policy especially as that policy related to warfare. In a major reinterpretation of the sources Rome and the Enemy shows that concepts of national honor fierce competition for status and revenge drove Roman foreign policy and though different from the highly rationalizing strategies often attributed to the Romans dictated patterns of response that remained consistent over centuries. Mattern reconstructs the world view of the Roman decision-makers the emperors and the elite from which they drew their advisers. She discusses Roman conceptions of geography strategy economics and the influence of traditional Roman values on the conduct of military campaigns. She shows that these leaders were more strongly influenced by a traditional stereotyped perception of the enemy and a drive to avenge insults to their national honor than by concepts of defensible borders. In fact the desire to enforce an image of Roman power was a major policy goal behind many of their most brutal and aggressive campaigns. Rome and the Enemy provides a fascinating look into the Roman mind in addition to a compelling re-examination of Roman conceptions of warfare and national honor. The resulting picture creates a new understanding of Rome's long mastery of the Mediterranean world. . University of California Press hardcover

BARBARIANS IN GREEK COMEDY
Southern Illinois University Press. Good with no dust jacket. 1986. Hardcover. 0809312484 . Ex-library copy with usual stamps call numbers. Pocket has been removed from ffep causing some damage. Else VG. ; Greeks divided the world into Greece vs. The land of foreigners into Hellenes vs. Barbarians seeing their country as a bastion of culture learning and military might surrounded by a sea of the uncivilized. Long shows how comedy expressed the Greek feeling of superiority over the barbarians how it dealt with the so-called barbarian-Hellene antithesis. The result is a contribution to the study of ancient Greek comedyboth the comedy itself and the beliefs the prejudices the limitations and the variety in the society from which the plays emerged. The comedians responses to the barbarians ranged from idealization to neutrality to raw racism. Although contemptuous of barbarians the Hellenes could not keep elements of foreign culture from entering their own. Longs major contention is that the Greek reaction to Oriental and other foreign influence can be seen in the treatment of barbarians in Greek comedy. ; 240 pages .
