Horace; Jacob Fuchs & William S. Anderson Intro.
HORACE'S SATIRES AND EPISTLES
W. W. Norton & Company. Very Good. 1977. Softcover. 0393090930 . Light shelfwear. Light yellowing and faint creasing to rear wrap. ; 128 pages; Early in his life and again in maturity Horace sought to turn his poetic skills to the uses of moral and aesthetic discussion in the series of didactic works translated here. In the Satires Horace adopts one persona after another each of which reduces himself to absurdity in the process of trying to argue a point of view about the ethical or artistic life. The form of the Epistles permits Horace to write with particular intimacy addressing moral issues in a persuasive yet informal way. The third epistle The Art of Poetry on the other hand is a formal poem addressed to the emperor Augustus and seeks to educate the poetic taste of the ruler of the western world. . W. W. Norton & Company paperback

WIT AND THE WRITING OF HISTORY The Rhetoric of Historiography in Imperial Rome
Madison WI U.S.A.: University of Wisconsin Press. Very Good. 1988. Softcover. 0299118045 . Minor curling of wraps along foreedges. Light shelfwear. ; Wit has many uses in political discourseto entertain to underscore or unmask to hinder or enhance insight. Wit and the Writing of History focuses on how this potential is realized in the historiography of the earlier Principate. Preeminently in Tacitus to a lesser degree in Suetonius and Dio Cassius wit is a vehicle for political understanding and judgment of the historical account. As part of Roman political life hostile anecdotal or epigrammatic wit was deeply embedded in the sources used by historians and is reflected in the rhetoric of their narratives. Some anecdotes may in fact have been mere jests later taken as fact hence the frequent problem of credulity. But what is historically false can be politically true. Not only were political jokes a weapon for making some fair points against the Principate; ancient rhetorical theory recognized that wit in general arises from a violation of normal expected ways of thinking. What is funny is thus disturbing in a serious way as well as amusing and in the hands of Tacitus wit becomes scalpel as well as sword. ; Wisconsin Studies in Classics; 182 pages . From its meteoric rise as a seaport and shipbuilding center during the First Punic War until its abrupt destruction with the eruption of Vesuvius in A. D. 79 the city passed through four major building periods. After a general introduction to Pompeii's history and geography the book proceeds through each period discussing its public buildings private buildings and tombs. Each building is described and placed according to its importance in the development of its particular architectural form. Richardson offers new dates and arrives at new conclusions about the development of such important features as the city plan fortifications and the atrium/peristyle house. Fifty ground plans and twenty-five photographs illustrate the text. "There has long been a need for a comprehensive account in English of the architecture and urban development of Pompeii. Richardson's book makes a valiant effort to remedy the deficiency and will be particularly welcome to all students of Roman architecture"-- Classical Review . THE IMPERIAL ROMAN ARMY
Hippocrene Books. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1994. Hardcover. 0781802598 . Bumping to lower corners. Book and Dustjacket have minor shelfwear. ; The Emperor Augustus believed that the Roman army occupied a crucial place at the heart of the empire and it was he who made it a fully professional force. This book looks at the structure and development of the army between the Republic and the Late Empire examining why the army has always been accorded such a prominent position in the history of the Roman Empire and whether that view is justified. The book is divided into three sections. The author first examines the major divisions of army organization - the legions the auxiliary units the fleet - and how the men were recruited. Secondly he looks at what the army did - the training tactics and strategy. Finally he considers the historical role of the army - how it fitted into Roman society of which it was only part and what influence it had economically and politically. In exploring these themes the author gives equal weight to epigraphic documentary and archaeological evidence. With tables summarizing detailed information Yann Le Bohec provides a synthesis of current knowledge of the Roman army from the first to the third century AD putting it in its context as part of the state structure of the Roman Empire. ; 9.75 x 1.25 x 6.75 Inches; 304 pages . THE ORIGINS OF THE CENTER FOR HELLENIC STUDIES
Princeton University Press. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 1990. Hardcover. 0691031746 . Very light rubbing else Fine. ; 96 pages; A case study in American philanthropy this book describes the beginnings of the Center for Hellenic Studies a research institute established in 1961 in Washington D.C. as an outpost of Harvard University. Each year eight post-doctoral fellows come from all over the world to live at the center and do research in ancient Greek literature philosophy or history. The idea behind this arrangement began with the preeminent philanthropist Paul Mellon's interest in finding a project to advance the humanities. Eric Lindquist traces the ten-year evolution of the center from Mellon's first general notion. In the process he portrays some of the hopes and fears for the humanities especially the classics in America during the period following World War II and the climate of opinion that led to the establishment of the center. The study concludes with a short account of the subsequent development of the center. This is the first published account of the origins of the center. . Princeton University Press hardcover
