Knauf was a member of the Independent Social Democratic Party and an editor of the newspaper "Plauener Volkszeitung". In 1930 he published a semi-autobiographical series of remembrances �a ira "It will" in French about his experiences during the Kapp Putsch of the Weimar republic. He was later denounced and executed for cracking jokes about the fuhrer. The putsch was an attempt in March 1920 aimed at undoing the results of the German Revolution of 1918�1919 overthrowing the Weimar Republic and establishing a right-wing autocratic government. It was supported by the politician Kapp parts of the military and other conservative nationalistic and monarchistic forces. The coup took place in Berlin and the legitimate German government was forced to flee the city. However it failed after a few days when large sections of the German population followed a call by the legitimate government to join a general strike and most civil servants refused to cooperate with the illegitimate government of Kapp see Wikipedia. The red stamp of the Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold English: "Black Red Gold Banner of the Reich" appears on several pages in this book. This was a socialist organization in Germany during the Weimar Republic formed by members of the Social Democratic Party of Germany the German Centre Party and the liberal German Democratic Party in 1924. Its goal was to defend parliamentary democracy against internal subversion and extremism from the left and right to teach the population to respect the new Republic to honor its flag and the constitution. Its name is derived from the Flag of Germany adopted in 1919 the colors of which were associated with liberal parliamentary democracy and the republic. While the Reichsbanner was set up as a multiparty organization it came to be strongly associated with the Social Democratic Party and viewed as their paramilitary force whose opponents were the Communist Party of Germany and their Rotfrontk�mpferbund on the left and the Nazi Party and their Sturmabteilung on the right. Following the Nazi takeover Reichsbanner members played a central role in the anti-Nazi resistance. The book also has the red stamp of Julius Klein on the fep. Julius Klein was born in 1901 in a Jewish family. During World War I he was an American spy in Germany. Klein's connection to the House of David as a descendant of Rabbi Meir Katzenellenbogen is illustrated in The Unbroken Chain. After the war Klein worked in Chicago as a journalist and later as Hollywood executive. He is also credited with being the first person to run radio broadcasts in German in the USA.He was a hero during WW2 when he saved many lives during an explosion at New Caledonia in the South Pacific. In 1941 he formulated an important military plan called "Combat Public Relations" which encompassed such topics as psychological warfare and propaganda. He also helped ameliorate both German-American and German-Israel relations after World War II. After serving as a spy in Germany in World War I he began his civilian career in the 1920s as a criminal reporter for The State Herald a Hearst Corporation newspaper in Chicago and initiated the first German language radio broadcasts in the United States.
